MANILA, Philippines (4th UPDATE) – Eighteen-year-old actor and model AJ Perez was killed in a highway accident in Tarlac early Sunday morning, according to a report by radio dzMM.

Police said Perez was with his father

Star Magic teen actor AJ Perez died in vehicular accident
and 4 others aboard an ABS-CBN van that collided with a Partas provincial passenger bus along McArthur Highway in Barangay San Julian, Tarlac.

Police Officer 2 Michael Millante of the Moncada Police told dzMM that Perez was declared dead on arrival by a hospital in Paniqui shortly after the accident took place at 12:10 a.m.

Perez’s 5 other companions were reportedly also injured during the crash and were taken to the hospital for treatment. They are Gerardo Perez (father), driver Christopher Bautista, Christina Ferrer, Edwin Patelos and Dannilyn Nunga.

The group had just come from a show in Dagupan and were reportedly on their way back to Manila.

Millante said the van carrying the victims tried to overtake a trailer truck when it collided with the incoming Partas bus.

Earlier, showbiz reporter and columnist Ogie Diaz reported the incident through his Twitter account.

Diaz said he has talked to the father of the Star Magic actor.

Shortly before the accident, Perez was still able to post a Twitter message thanking his fans who attended his show in Dagupan.

"On the way home already from Dagupan.Long drive ahead.. Thanks to everybody who watched, thanks to zui for the gifts. And hi again to jarred!" said Perez.

“Confirmed: Bodjie Dasig, songwriter of ‘Sana Dalawa ang Puso Ko,’ husband of Odette Quesada passed away today too.

- FRJ, GMA News

It is with deepest sadness that I share the news of Karl's passing. He was called Home today at 1:01 a.m. Manila time (Tuesday, March 13th), surrounded by those who loved him most—mommy, Keith, Kevin, Krys, his daughter Arianna, and our cousin Jack (Roy-Duavit)," Kathryn wrote.

"Please continue to pray for Karl. He brought so much joy to others but, unfortunately, did not have enough of it in this life. He's in a better place now, with Lolo Pepe, Lola Conching and Daddy," she added.

Atty. Jose Roy III, a member of Chief Justice Renato Corona's defense panel, conveyed his family's appreciation to all who sympathized with them, reported GMA News' Tina Perez Tuesday. Atty. Roy is Karl's cousin.

Karl was the vocalist of three well-known Pinoy rock bands, P.O.T., Kapatid, and Advent Call.

Among his hits is "Luha" which he performed with Kapatid

Storm approaching Phl expected to enhance southwest monsoon
By Helen Flores (The Philippine Star) Updated August 23, 2012 12:00 AM

MANILA, Philippines - A tropical cyclone approaching Philippine territory is expected to enhance the southwest monsoon, which will bring rains over parts of Luzon including Metro Manila starting tomorrow.

Nathaniel Servando, administrator of the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), said the weather disturbance is likely to enter the country this morning.

The tropical cyclone with international name “Bolaven” will be given the local name “Julian” once it enters the Philippine area of responsibility.

“Julian will trigger monsoon, bringing light to occasional moderate rains in Metro Manila by Friday until Monday,” Servando told The STAR.

As of 4 p.m. yesterday, Bolaven was spotted at 1,470 kilometers east of extreme Northern Luzon with maximum winds of 140 kilometers per hour (kph) near center and gustiness of up to 170 kph.

Meanwhile, PAGASA said “Igme” (international name “Tembin”) slightly weakened as it continued to move toward Taiwan yesterday afternoon.

As of 4 p.m. yesterday, Igme was located 290 km northeast of Basco, Batanes, packing winds of 130 kph near center and gustiness of up to 160 kph.

Public storm warning signal number 2 was raised over the Batanes group of islands as of 5 p.m. yesterday.

Igme was forecast to move west-northwest slowly at seven kph and is expected to bring 10 to 20 millimeters per hour of rain (moderate to heavy) within its 500-km radius.

PAGASA continued to warn operators of fishing boats and other small seacraft against venturing out to the northern and eastern seaboards of Luzon due to big waves generated by Igme.

Igme is predicted to be 260 km north-northeast of Basco this afternoon and at 370 km north-northwest of Basco or outside the Philippine area of responsibility tomorrow afternoon.

“The two weather disturbances may interact but will not cause erratic movement of the two cyclones. Igme will move to Taiwan while Julian will move towards Okinawa,” Servando said.

Meanwhile, the water elevation at Angat Dam remains above the 210-meter spilling level yesterday despite releasing water into the Angat River.

Records from the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) showed that as of 8 a.m. yesterday, the water elevation at the dam dropped to 212.79 meters above sea level (masl) from its 213.13 masl record on Tuesday.

The PDRRMO record also showed that Angat Dam was spilling 194 cubic meters per second to bring down its water elevation below the 210 spilling level.

The National Power Corp. (Napocor), which operates the dam, said the release of water was timed with the low tide in coastal areas of Bulacan.

The Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System (MWSS), on the other hand, is now considering joint utilization of the La Mesa Dam with two of its major concessionaires.

Right now, Ipo Dam in Norzagaray, Bulacan is being used by Maynilad Water Services Inc. as sub-reservoir, while La Mesa Dam in Novaliches, Quezon City is being used by Manila Water Corp. Inc.

The proposal came from the provincial government of Bulacan, which pointed out that since November last year the government’s dam protocol on preemptive release of water when there is an approaching typhoon was not being followed.

Bulacan Gov. Wilhelmino Alvarado said that MWSS has been studying the proposal for short-term flood mitigation in the province.

Alvarado said that the MWSS is also considering the establishment of a sub-reservoir for Maynilad.

Maynilad’s utilization of the Ipo Dam as a sub-reservoir was discovered after the province suffered from severe flooding following the onslaught of typhoons “Pedring” and “Quiel” last year.

In an ensuing investigation, engineer Herminio Medrano of the Common Purpose Facilities (CPF) that operates Ipo Dam admitted that they have to maintain water elevation at the dam at near critical level.

This negates the proposal of the Aquino administration for common dam operation protocol during typhoon season that includes preemptive release of water.

Alvarado said the situation makes it impossible for CPF to do preemptive release when a typhoon is coming as they have to maintain a near critical level water elevation at the dam.

“We demand that Maynilad establish their own sub-reservoir or temporarily share La Mesa Dam with Manila Water so that Ipo Dam can conduct preemptive water release and prevent unnecessary flooding in Bulacan,” Alvarado said.

Rise in leptospirosis

The Department of Health (DOH) said yesterday that the rise in cases of leptospirosis is expected to continue, two weeks after massive flooding hit Metro Manila and nearby provinces.

However, Lyndon Lee Suy, DOH program manager for Emerging and Re-Emerging Diseases, said cases may still be lower compared to those caused by tropical storm “Ondoy” in September 2009.

According to Lee Suy, since many areas are still submerged in floodwaters, “we cannot really say that there will be no more cases after this week.”

It usually takes three to 10 days before symptoms manifest.

DOH records showed that from Jan. 1 to Aug. 11, a total of 2,374 leptospirosis cases with 121 deaths were reported. This is 70.18 percent higher than the 1,395 cases during the same period in 2011.

The DOH said the number of cases was high due to the flashfloods that hit Cagayan de Oro late last year.

“Most of the cases were from Region 10 (38.80 percent); Region VI (18.7 percent); and National Capital Region (7.8 percent). Ages of cases ranged from less than two months to 93 years old. Most (28.2 percent) of the cases belonged to 21-30 years age group,” the agency said.  – With Dino Balabo, Sheila Crisostomo

7.1-magnitude earthquake rattles Philippines

CEBU CITY, Philippines (TV5/CNN) - A magnitude-7.1 earthquake struck Tuesday, the U.S. Geological Survey said.
The quake was centered about 385 miles south-southeast of Manila, near Catigbian, and its depth was 12 miles, according to the USGS.
The quake, which struck early in the morning, crumbled a number of buildings and sent panicked people streaming into the streets, witnesses said.

The Associated Press reported Tuesday that 93 people had died.
At least 15 were killed in the city of Cebu, four were killed in the province of Bohol and one died in the province of Siquijor, said Maj. Reynaldo Balido, a spokesman for the Philippines Office of Civil Defense.
Most of those killed were hit by falling rubble, the Philippines News Agency reported.
At least 33 people were missing, and authorities were checking into reports of people trapped in collapsed buildings in Cebu and Bohol, the agency reported. Another 164 were injured, authorities said.

Maryann Zamora said it seemed like a dream at first, then everyone started running through the building she was in and things started to fall.
Zamora, a communications specialist with the charity World Vision, said there was glass and concrete in the streets of Cebu City, which is about 37 miles north of the epicenter.
"Right now, we are in the streets because it is unsafe to be inside," she said by phone, her voice shaking as one of more than 10 aftershocks hit. "Tell everyone to pray for us."
She said it is a national holiday - Eidul Adha - and many people were relaxing when the earthquake rattled the country just after 8 a.m.

There was no widespread threat of a tsunami, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said, but it warned that earthquakes this large can sometimes cause tsunamis within 61 miles of the epicenter.
Catigbian, which has a population of 23,000, is in the province of Bohol.

Tourist Robert Michael Poole said he was riding a bike in Bohol when the earthquake struck and cracked the road right in front of him.
"It was very strong," Poole said. "I live in Tokyo. I am used to earthquakes. But this one was very strong. It shocked a lot of people here."
Poole said he was able to move around and document some of the destruction, including a giant church that was decimated.
"Lucky thing is that it is a holiday here today and it happened at a time when nobody was in the church," Poole said.

GUMUHO!

[MORE ]

“The energy of the Bohol quake can be compared to 32 Hiroshima atomic bomb,” ayon pa kay Solidum sa isinagawang media briefing kahapon.

Stampede, panic at ligalig

Ang Philippine Coast Guard (PCG), pansamantala ring sinuspende ang operasyon Port of Tagbilaran, Bohol at Port of Cebu.
