You can find treadles at antique shops...they run about $150 for a working one (out here in the midwest).   You can still get belts and parts for Singers.   I have a Singer treadle and an old electric Necchi that can be converted to treadle power.   I use them all the time and they sew better than modern sewing machines.   Definately worth the investment incase electricity becomes a thing of the past....

Chaunska, somehow I missed this. Adding it to the survival list now.
Treadle sewing machine and parts.

Looking through old topics I came across this one and thought I'd leave my two cents...
I, for one, am hoping that bartering in the after time is not required. If the meek inherate the Earth as has been predicted, a "civilized" civilization should emerge... I HOPE... One where we as a human race come together as one big family, we share, we encorage and grow together, AS EQUALS, not separated by class, race or how much assets we have. If I survive the coming Earth changes, and another Human Being comes to me and is hungry and I have food I will share it, if they are thirsty, I will share my water, if they need shelter I will share my shelter...
I have lived for 40 years in this so called " society" of the haves and the have nots, it has never made sence to me, and this all started from bartering, the thought that if you want something of mine you must give something in return... Many societies, such as Australian Aborigines and many other cultures as well, survived peacfully on community sharing, until the white European came along and forced them to become "sheeple".
Please, I pray that the monatary system dies, people live free and equal. Control of the individual returns to the individual and the human race prospers as a complete group.

OK, that was more like 4 cents...

Peace
Leo  :)

I've always felt that the "aftertimes" will be much more peaceful than a lot of people on this forum think.  I don't think those who are left will start militias and have to patrol areas to "protect" themselves, property, etc.  If that's true, then what really changed?  I understand ex military people, and those who like to pretend they are military minded, find this scenario attractive because it will make them feel like they are in charge and people will look up to them.

But I've always thought that the big change will be basically the Earth ridding itself of nasty people who destroyed it, or others.  And those who are left will be more of the gentle people who are in touch with the Earth, with others, things like that.  I wish I could explain it better, but this is the best I can do.

I agree, but how fast will the transition be?

I think the transition will be faster than people think.  I think the first 3-4 months will be the worst, most unsettling time, then after that, those left will be the ones who are supposed to be left.  That's just how I see it and how it feels to me.

I think it depends on what you believe is going to happen.  I think the worst case scenario is that PX is coming through, is going to wreak havoc, and leave us in smoldering darkness...  In that case, we need to be prepared for anything and everything...  starting completely over in a dog-eat-dog world with no help from anyone.  That is what I have been trying to get ready for and hoping I won't need it.  Like I said, worst case scenario...  I'd rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it.  Best case scenario...  Ascension and assistance from our starfriends.  In that instance, we need to be ready to survive for 30 days or so...  They say a week, I say a month.  My goal is to have everything we would need to live for a year, without catching a fish, hunting a deer, or shooting  a rabbit.  That is my goal.  Right now we're at 4 months.  The awesome thing is that if it turns out to only be a week, we will have plenty to share...  Hopefully this helps...  JKB

Steedy, I just had to say that I feel the same way!  I don't know if it is some type of intuition, or just hopeful thinking on my part, but I really don't feel like the devastation will last for an excessive length of time.  Here's to hoping and praying we are right!

It's been so many years ago that I started feeling like things are going to change.  The only way I could ever describe it was like we'd all go back to living like in the 1800's.  So for years I've felt this change will end up peaceful.  Of course at first there will be selfish nuts out there trying to grab what's not theirs.  Look at rioting when people smash through stores and grab stuff just to take it.  They burn they're own houses down too.  That's not rational thinking being displayed.  But some of that will take place at first because there are people who's reaction to chaos is anger.

But that type of behavior won't be tolerated in the aftertime I think.  It will be more like an attitude of "we've been there, done that, it didn't work so let's try peaceful living".  Right now, I'm thinking of the "beating their swords into plowshares" type of life.

I know there have been lots of movies made depicting the end being like mini war zones everywhere.  That's Hollywood's idea to illicit strong emotional reactions to their films for money.  You don't have to watch them (I don't).  I'm afraid the more people watch those types of movies, the more they will be being "trained" to act that way when TSHTF.

With all that being said,  still stock up on all supplies.  I would like to have 1 year of food, but 2 years would be even better in case of a bad crop.  I'll be getting freezed dried stuff later this summer.

Deep down I think most people are to lazy and dependent on the system we have now to survive, they will get hungry and  nasty a lot of innocent will perish from the gangs. They will get strong for a while but when the easy targets become fewer the morally decent survivors will clean up the trash and at that point just maybe we can rebuild a just world. It will never be even and everyone share equally world, because some people will work hard and some will not. After a while the people who at first were willing to share see they work hard planting harvesting etc. etc. and others just take they will stop giving freely rightfully so. But I hope people are willing to help others as long as they are willing to help themselves. I am not a cold person and would probably give away to much to people it is in my nature, especially to the little ones. On the other hand I would have no more respect for a looter in time of disaster then a bug on a windshield. There are a lot of good people in the world I hope many make it and do a better job then we have so far. Bartering can be a good helpful and fair practice. I would love to be able to help someone set up a cabin if they could cook better tasting food then I, we have put up several items to barter for getting a tooth pulled or some other skill that we lack, no one can do everything.

Skills are good to have.  So are barter items, ammo, vodka, silver, ect.  But I feel like you all.  You must band together.  They may have skills that you do not possess.  You become stronger in numbers... Good luck to all

I would have to agree with the previous two posts from Family Times and 1966, as I have an idea of where I would like to be, but, in reality, unless things continue to string on like they have, I will never reach my goal.  I have enough right now so that my wife and I could lay low for a whole six months, period.  My goal is a year, but...  I have other family to consider and so that number gets divided into a fraction pretty quickly.  The bottom line is that there is no such thing as enough...  The fact is that I am lookining at buying a trailer now because I can't see how in the world we are going to transport all of this stuff where I have to go and back without one...  I guess there is no perfect scenaririo where you are just already set up on perfect land with barns and all what-not that you would need or want.

I'm already thinking that we we may not have to go that far anyway, so....  I guess we'll see, won't we?

What about boulion cubes?  I don't know how to spell it.  But I was thinking it could make broth for soup.
