When you need to be the doctor since there is no one else!
« on: September 27, 2012, 11:16:04 AM »
This Topic falls under the job description of being a "Survivalist,"  because of the many scenarios which
could happen, in which there is no access to medical care. Let's say it is an emergency and you need to treat yourself on the spot and/ or other people in your group.
We have a topic or two on "When there is no doctor" also one in Spanish, which is a pdf.
This topic will be along those lines. Situations arising from accidents, cataclysms.
Shoulders need to be put back into place. Bones need to be set. Injections of morphine need to be given.
Airways need to be cleared, CPR given; oxygen given.
Using of an emergency home cardiac resuscitation kit. These types of situations.
We have a whole different board for natural cures. Some of those might apply to emergency situations too - herbs such as powdered cayenne which help with hemorrhages.
This topic will not only include care for injured people, this topic will include discussions and PDFs on delivering a baby and so on.
Sorry people, there will, of necessity be some overlapping and duplication with other Boards.
For example we will have a discussion childbirth, which will include emergency home birth in this Board,
http://planetxtownhall.com/index.php?board=90.0  The Feminine Side of 2012

Please post your ideas. My own Board on medicinal herbs etc. deals with herbs and foods for illnesses mainly. (Also that one is for long - term cures and maintenance of health.)
More soon,

I am looking for the military study on medication shelf life. There was a copy on my old comp. that died and a hard copy was never made and I print everything why I did not print it is a mystery to me. It listed all kinds of meds and some lasted for many years with little degrading they did the study because the branches of the service buy very large quantities of meds hundreds of millions a decade and they were tossing most of them when the bottle said they were bad well most of them were just fine and now they save a fortune only throwing out meds when they are truly bad. The list sort of did a vanishing act on the net if anyone has a copy I would love to get it and print it. That info. could mean the difference between life and death in a post modern world, one of our group must remember the list I am referring  to.

Note: This medical supply list is a work in progress and may not be entirely accurate yet. I am gradually re-arranging the list,
so you see the general name for an item first, alphabetically, then you see the description, brand, etc. after it.
Sometimes there will be a “brand name” but it is understood  it could
easily be generic, as part of a med kit or something you buy, cheap and generic.
Members post your suggestions, I will add them. - Yowbarb

1969quartz0 I agree that is really crucially important info to have. (Exactly how long the prescription medicine will last.) I will try to find it. We could post a Topic to the Mods also to see if they know where to get that info again.

I don't remember seeing your post. Do you remember what year it was?
We Mods/Admins don't delete posts generally when it is survival info.

There have been a couple times when a lot of info was lost off the Town Hall. Marshall had to start all over awhile back, over a year ago...

I lost a lot of info off my old computer too, back about 2007.  I had to give up on retrieving it and start over...
All The Best,

I never posted it but if I guess it was 5 years ago when I  lost the file maybe a little more it may have been before I came here in 2007-2008.

Medical Missionary
http://www.medicalmissionarysupply.com/download-free-books.html

About these books:

We would like to mention that there will be a vast array of books for you to download. However, there may be some that we feel are good for reference only and do not necessarily reflect our beliefs in terms of religion or common practices.  For example, there will be many sources for medicinal herbs, massage, and health etc. but some of the authors may have had some beliefs that are considered "New Age".  The scientific information about herbs and natural remedies may be 100% true so we need not disregard the expertise of an experienced herbalist because they mention a winter solstice or something like that. We would also like to state that J.H. Kellogg did write a book later in his life that promoted ideas of pantheism (which we will NOT put on this site) but he was one of the greatest physicians of his time so we will have some of his earlier works on anatomy, physiology, hydrotherapy, medical missionary work etc. available for download. Thank you for your understanding and your ability to use your God given reasoning powers in this matter.

Great resources, Barb, thanks so much for the research and links...as much as archiving
electronicly is doable right now, hardcopies in sheet protectors may be a better route to go, or maybe do both...!!!

Survival101, I agree, time to get this stuff printed and together.  :)
I have always believed in hard copies of things like addresses, maps, survival info, med instructions
and yes the plastic esterproof sheeting a great idea... Passport copies birth certs and dr licences too....

I may be posting this in its own Topic, meanwhile it needs to go here anyway. This is from Survivalblog on an OTC -over the counter med called Asthmanefrin. It it is indeed still available OTC it needs to be in the bugout vehicles, packs, shelter area and in the survival med cabinet. It is for use by people who don't necessarily have asthma. Indications: Shortness of breath and wheezing due to sudden serious allergic reactions from insect bites, allergies, etc.; acute bronchitis and no doc to go to...etc.
See the page itself for permalink and print, etc.

Asthmanefrin: A New Twist on a Life-Saving Medicine, by Cynthia J. Koelker, MD

Ever since Primatene Mist was taken off the market a year ago, SurvivalBlog readers have asked about a replacement for this potentially life-saving over-the-counter drug.    Now there is one, in the form of Asthmanefrin.
If you don’t have asthma, should you care?  Definitely so.
Although the drug is officially only indicated for asthma, in the event of societal collapse, it may be the only effective and available treatment for:
•Serious allergic reactions to foods, drugs, stinging/biting insects, or other substances
•Widespread hives
•Anaphylactic swelling of the face, lips, or throat (or angioedema)
•Dropping blood pressure
•Narrowed airways due to infection, inflammation, COPD, or exposure

If you don’t have any of these problems, you surely know someone who does. Or maybe you have a young child who may one day suffer from croup.  Or perhaps you occasionally contract acute bronchitis.  Or possibly you’ll be around a campfire where you accidentally inhale poison ivy smoke.  Any of these conditions may require an (adrenergic) bronchodilator, and the only available such medicine over-the-counter is Asthmanefrin.  Anyone who has struggled with asthma in the middle of the night can tell you why a rescue inhaler is worth its weight in gold.
When the FDA banned the manufacture of Primatene Mist as of December 31, 2011 (due to the CFC propellant and concerns about the ozone layer) asthmatics were left with no OTC alternative to prescription rescue inhalers.  Although Armstrong Pharmaceuticals does hope to release a new version of Primatene Mist using an approved hydrofluoroalkane (HFA) propellant, no date has yet been set.

The new product, Asthmanefrin, contains 11.25 mg of racepinephrine per 0.5 ml vial, in a solution equivalent to 1% epinephrine.  Epinephrine is the same medication contained in the Epi-Pen, the well-known injection for bee sting and other allergic reactions.  Although inhaled epinephrine is most active in the airways, some of it enters the bloodstream, which delivers it to the rest of the body, hence its ability to raise blood pressure, accelerate the heart rate, and relieve the vascular-related swelling common to hives and allergic reactions.
These potential benefits are also sometimes considered side-effects, which may be dangerous to patients with heart disease, hyperthyroidism, high blood pressure, tremor, and other nervous conditions.  Doctors don’t like over-the-counter epinephrine products due to 1) the potential harm they may cause in susceptible individuals, and 2) the potential delay they may cause in seeking needed professional care.  However, in a young, otherwise healthy population epinephrine is generally safe.

The product insert includes dosing recommendations for adults and children down to the age of 4 years old.  For adults, one 0.5 ml vial of solution is placed in the EZ Breathe Atomizer, with a recommendation of not more than 12 inhalations in 24 hours.  By comparison, Primatene Mist inhaler delivers 0.22 mg of epinephrine per inhalation, also with a limit of 12 inhalations per day.

The Starter Kit contains 10 vials plus one Atomizer and costs approximately $50, with the 30-vial Refill Kit priced at about $25, a small price to save a life.

This is a useful device to hedge against all pathogens. Just have to realize and remember that in acting upon biologicals the oxygen binds with whatever thereby reducing the oxygen in the air so please ventilate the room good so you will have good oxygen a good oxygen concentrator is nice for a space but it would need to be placed outside the space you are oxygenating to allow the concentration to increase{{:>http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004YL0JZW/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00)
