Earthquake measuring 6.6 magnitude strikes off PNG's northcoast: Pacific Tsunami Warning Center

If it's true that 7.0 is the lower threshold to cause a tsunami, then the 6.6 seems awfully close...

Posted less than an hour ago is this film of a "mini-tsunami" in South Africa:

@ 1:44, 2:04

Though the vid was posted this morning, it may be a re-post film of a mini-tsunami in the same area last March.  Still unclear.

STRONG Earthquake at the North Pole; Shallow Depth Sparks Tsunami Concerns

http://halturnerradioshow.com/index.php/news/world-news/1498-strong-earthquake-at-the-north-pole-shallow-depth-sparks-tsunami-concerns

There has been a STRONG earthquake at the North Pole, where the North American Tectonic Plate meets the Eur-Asian Tectonic Plate, at a depth of 10km below the Arctic Ocean.  This is an extraordinarily rare location for any earthquake, never mind one of this strength and at such a shallow depth.  The quake took place at 3:11 PM eastern US time Saturday.

There are concerns that the quake MAY have caused a Tsunami, but there are no Data Buoys that far north to warn anyone of such a hazard, AND FIVE OF THE SIX WARNING BUOYS CLOSER TO THE U.S. EAST COAST AREN'T WORKING ! ! ! ! !

If a Tsunami was generated, it would impact the northern coast of Russia, first.  Next would come Finland and Norway, then Greenland, Iceland and the US East Coast hours later.  In fact, it could even affect Alaska and the US West Coast from the location where the earthquake took place.

Thanks for reporting this Max.  Interesting that USGS doesn't seem to acknowledge it on its "Latest Earthquakes" page, unless I'm missing something.  Jim mentioned it today, and his source is traceable back to this USGS page:

https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eventpage/us1000ay3r#executive

Here is the chart of inoperative tsunami warning buoys from the link that you provided - not much help are they?

Below that is a screenshot of the Arctic quake location map on the more obscure USGS link - apparently their normal world map on their "Latest Earthquakes" page doesn't extend up that far north:

https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/goa/cyclone-full-moon-deal-double-blow/articleshow/61922167.cms

This news report says that it wasn't technically a tsunami (which would be defined as enormous waves following at least a 7.0 underwater earthquake), but rather an odd combination of a storm and unusually strong tidal wave activity caused by the pull of the moon.  Makes one wonder, then, what is going on with the moon?

Dangerous M6.5 earthquake hits Java Indonesia – Tsunami warning & pictures and videos of damages

http://strangesounds.org/2017/12/dangerous-m6-5-earthquake-hits-mainland-indonesia-pictures-and-videos-of-damages.html

A dangerous M6.5 earthquake hit the island of Java, 0km ESE of Cipatujah on December 15, 2017. When you look at the map from USGS below, you understand that the powerful quake was felt across wide parts of the island as well as on others situated nearby. A few minutes after the publication of the earthquake on USGS, more than 400 people reported feeling the rumble and hearing loud booms (earthquake booms). Luckily, the earthquakes wasn’t shallow and hit at a depth of 57.1 miles (91.9 km). BMKG has called a tsunami warning for the Indonesian coast.

There has been a lot of wild speculation in the past on some Youtube videos about how far inland a tsunami wave can reach.  Last night, Dutchsinse explained that although tsunamis can progress inland via tidal bore up streams, once the elevation of the stream is equal to the elevation of the original tidal wave at sea, the wave loses its momentum.  For example, for an 80' tidal wave, one needs to move inland to higher ground at least 80' above sea level.

Dutch demonstrated that one needs to travel a good distance inland from the West Coast to find such elevations, and recommends that people leave the Coast immediately at the first sign of a tsunami, proceeding on foot to the east if necessary.  As an example, he used Beaverton, Oregon as the nearest location from the coastline reaching 80' elevation, which is 84 miles from shore and takes an hour and 40 minutes to reach by car.  Elevations are available by hovering a mouse over an area while looking at the lower right side of a Google Earth map.

Dutch reminded us of USGS's prediction that a >9 magnitude is expected to hit Cascadia at some point in the future.  By definition, any quake at sea greater than 7 magnitude can produce a tsunami.

Additionally, he warned to expect electrical power stations to be shut down ahead of a tsunami, and that Internet outages would be an issue, so not to expect help from online maps in such an event.

As Jim has also noted, some reports of water at the coastline of Ecuador receding suddenly have been posted today.  Steve Olsen speculates that it may not signal a tsunami, similarly to the way that the recent receding water at the Brazilian coastline did not result in a tsunami:

A new video by Steve Olsen notes that the ocean is now receding from part of the Florida coastline.

Makes one wonder if those "King Tides" (I think that's the name) in the Miami area, that cause waters rushing through the streets of parts of Miami, will continue flooding out million-dollar beach-front businesses, and continue to draw tourists who just want to see Miami's streets flooded, or will the excessively high tides stop?

Last Thursday, the 18th, high waves on the coast of the Pacific NW were recorded by buoys there.  Most were under 32 feet, but at least one was recorded at 60 feet in height.  These were described as being rogue waves, rather than a formal tsunami which would have had to follow a magnitude 7.0 or greater earthquake, by definition.  The final photo shows how far the tidal bore pushed inland, covering roads and disrupting the flow of traffic.  Several minutes of film footage show the tide's encroachment.
