Note: More geomagnetic storms could be on the way.
There was a G2 (Moderate) Geomagnetic Storm today and a G1 is expected.

EXPLOSION ON THE SUN: On April 23rd around 0500 UT, a dark filament of magnetism on the sun exploded. See the movie from NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory:

An analysis is underway to determine if any portion of the debris is heading for Earth. Stay tuned.

SUNSPOT COUNTS ARE PLUMMETING: Today marks the 4th day in a row and the 34th day in 2017 that the sun has been blank--no sunspots. This exceeds the total number of spotless days in all of 2016 (32). The accelerating pace of spotlessness is a sign that Solar Minimum is approaching. Forecasters expect the sunspot cycle, which swings like a pendulum between high and low sunspot number every ~11 years, to reach its nadir in 2019-2020. Stay tuned for more blank suns.

COSMIC RAYS ARE INTENSIFYING: Many people think Solar Minimum is boring. Wrong. During the nadir of the sunspot cycle, the entire heliosphere changes its personality with many consequences for the space around our planet. One of the most important changes involves cosmic rays--high-energy radiation reaching Earth from deep space. As sunspot numbers decline, cosmic rays intensify. (I had just noticed a recent C+ flare)

SOLAR FLARE ACTIVITY RESUMES: After a weekend of relative quiet, sunspot AR2661 is flaring again. At 0530 UT on June 5th, the active region produced a C3-class explosion that might have produced a coronal mass ejection (CME). Stay tuned for updates as coronagraph data become available later in the day.

Note from Yowbarb: Inactive Earth-facing disk. That should change big time, when PX gets even closer to our Sun.

BLANK SUN HERALDS SOLAR MINIMUM: Sunspot AR2661 has dissolved, leaving the face of the sun blank.  This is the 39th day in 2017 (so far) that the sun has been without spots, continuing a sharp decline in the solar cycle.  Forecasters expect Solar Minimum to arrive in 2019-2020.

EARTH-FACING SUNSPOT  AR2664 is growing, directly facing Earth, June 27, 2017.
Could produce an M-flare.

NEW SUNSPOT: Breaking a string of two spotless days, new sunspot AR2665 is emerging over the sun's eastern limb. It's a big sunspot, with a primary dark core twice as wide as Earth. The magnetic canopy of AR2665 is crackling with minor B-class solar flares, but so far nothing stronger. This is probably a mostly-quiet sunspot typical of the decaying solar cycle.

MINOR GEOMAGNETIC STORMS: A weak shock wave at the leading edge of a solar wind stream hit Earth's magnetic field on July 9th. The impact sparked a period of intermittent G1-class geomagnetic storms, most intense during the hours of 00:00 - 03:00 UT and 09:00 - 12:00 UT. So far no auroras have been reported, probably because they were overwhelmed by the glare of the full Moon. NOAA forecasters estimate a 55% chance of similar storms on July 10th as Earth moves through the solar wind stream.

A 75,000-mile-wide HOLE has appeared on the sun – and experts warn it could knock out communications satellites and cause blackouts on Earth :o

Nasa spotted the sunspot last week, but it has lingered through to today
Dubbed AR2665, it is big enough to be spotted from Earth
Experts have warned the spot is large enough to produce 'M-class' solar flares
These can cause stunning auroras, and wipe out communication satellites

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-4689446/A-75-000-mile-wide-HOLE-appeared-sun.html

A huge spot has appeared on the sun that could send dangerous solar flares down to Earth.

The sunspot, dubbed AR2665, is 74,560 miles (120,000 kilometres) wide – big enough to be seen from Earth.

Experts have warned that the spot is large enough to produce 'M-class' solar flares, which can cause radio blackouts on Earth, knock out communications satellites and create radiation storms.

Dig In!

LATEST SOLAR NEWS:
(Jul 14 1103UTC) The CME ejected by the solar flare appears to be heading at earth. While the coronal hole stream is impacting this weekend, we will need to monitor for the CME impact as well. Geomagnetic storms (G1-G4) are possible, with the worst potential existing in a double impact scenario- coronal hole, then CME.
(Jul 14 0231UTC) A long-duration M class solar flare has erupted from the departing southern sunspot. A large CME is in the process of erupting.
