there is a church down here in fl south Sarasota I think that built a round building with a 500 mph wind rating supposedly. the county wanted to use it as a shelter and the church said it was for its members only.

Hi all and thanks Barb for starting this thread. Some of you may remember that I have been on this site (old one) for some time and most of the older members remember that I have built an underground facility. Diehard has seen some of the preliminary work being done as to the size and forthought that goes into building an underground facility. I wanted to post some of the thought process that should go into an underground. The following I believe are all things to consider and I had to overcome in the best way I knew possible. If any one has questions, I would like to hear from you. Perhaps I have modifications that would need to be made from ideas that others have. Issues to consider: Fresh air exchange, Sanitation, toilet, shower, Fresh water, Outside power on the grid, Inside power off the grid, AC and DC, Generation of power, fuel storage, food storage, how much, how many people in with you, survival group, defense measures, stealthyness, How long can you survive underground, Games for everyone, heat, must be self draining with out power, books and sanity! Just a start.
God will not take you where gods grace cannot protect you.
Colin (osok)

Hi Highwayman
it's great to hear from you. Is your shelter reinforced with ribar or glass fiber polymer reinforcement.
RE the issues you mentioned are these ones that you have solved, or are looking to solve?
I very much appreciate your post and would like to hear more how you built it...

All The Best,
Yowbarb

This post is a good contribution, it is by Linda, and is also in my
Coping With 2012 Rejection board.
Excerpt from Linda's post:

"Mjoy and Barb, .......information on the bunkers from the Planet X book on protecting yourself from gamma radiation.
On page 163 it shows a chart on gamma ray half-values, which is the thickness of material between us and the radiation.
For 50% protection you would have to have 2.2" of concrete protecting you, the thicker the material the more protection,
so a underground parking structure may do the trick, and so on.  When I first read all that is necessay to protect yourself from
possible radiation I felt rather defeated, but by knowing these things, you can take actions, and these are worse case senarios. But
knowledge is key, to quote Marshall's Motto "Destiny finds those who listen, and fate finds the rest. So learn what you can learn, do what you
can do, and never give up hope!"

Here are some more images and ideas of domes homes.
I wouldn't recommend the designs which have cutesy doors and spacious windows which could easily blow in etc. during
earth changes.
I figure if a group survives and the situation outside settles down, the dome could be uncovered. Maybe windows could be put in.
Better yet: Other domes with windows could be built.
There was a church dome in Louisiana that survived Katrina that did have a few windows. They were super thick solid plastic windows, set in from the outside about a foot. Not sure what they did to the dorrs but no wind or water came in. I say use the dome ideas for inspiration but modify it for what you think the worst scenario could be.
My idea of a serious survival dome would be one that has built on concrete steps leading to a top entrance. A hinged door opens up. Under that is a round submarine type hatch. You go down a sturdy built in plastic ladder to the inside. Before you shut the hatch you grab a rope on the topmost door
and pull it to you, pull it shut - and then latch it from the inside. Then you go down into the hatch and then shut that. Whatever ventilation you set up it has to work. The more openings there are to the outside, the less of a survival
dome it is.

Things to think about...

http://www.monolithic.com/stories/feature-school-caledonia   More Domes to look at.
A school in Caledonia. Bless 'em they have created a much more safe structure for their children. This is a good step.
I personally would not recomment trying to have a safe haven in the southeastern areas - not in general,

Have a look anyway - great dome ideas:

"Stick-to-itiveness Round One
After rejecting four bond issues in five years, in 2000, the 165 residents of Caledonia, Missouri overwhelmingly approved one. That approval happened because School Superintendent Larry Graves and Elementary Principal Steve Yount launched an intensive, persistent campaign aimed at educating their community about Monolithic Domes.

So Caledonians said yes to the construction of three Monolithic Domes, two to house classrooms for grades 3 through 6 and one as a gymnasium at their Valley R-6 School District that serves 475 students in Kindergarten through Grade 12.

Planning began immediately, closely followed by the start of construction. On Presidents Day 2002, the community proudly opened the doors of its two academic domes and students and teachers moved into their 11 new classrooms...."

Hi All this post is about ideas for a concrete pipe home. It will probably need to be tweaked for maximum survival characteristics. The Tiny Home site has a lot of neat ideas and free or low cost design plans.

Here's a site that is taking deposits on space for rooms in an old AT&T telephone bunker.  They don't have enough invested to do the renovations, but it's an interesting idea.

Here's another article that talks about a "survival condo" and their website.  Seems kinda pricey though, $900,000 for a half floor condo package.  But it does has a LED big screen in every unit, home automation, Kohler bath fixtures and jetted Jacuzzi tub in each master bath, and Biometric Key locks (you won't need to worry about losing a key).

LVMikecheck my father almost bought a old AT&T bunker on EBAY a few years back it cost 16 million to build just the structure in the early 60's it was 38,000 square feet lead in the concrete two 19,000 levels exact copies two of everything double well double septic fields two air filter systems we were going to make a secure document storage company  it was a big mistake not doing it I think it was on forty acres but it was on Fed. land in what looked like a bay of land with a mountain wrapping around it plus a lot of equipment above ground. It only went for about $400,000.00 and it was listed many times I watched it for months hopping he would buy it my boys and I almost had him convinced. It was in Wyoming it was meant to survive a nuclear attack. it was one awesome place we were going to build a house out of the lowest level before we did we talked about having a couple motorcycle races it was that big we still talk about it now and then.

Just came across another company that does concrete dome homes.  I found them when I was reading up on the "Ultimate Secure Home" outside of Durango CO, some have probably seen the home before but here's the site.  It is well prepared for just about anything.

http://aedra.com/~sotto/shtf/safe-house-example/www.ultimatesecurehome.com/secure_home.htm

The thing that appeals to me is that they seem to be friendlier to those of a D-I-Y mindset.  Don't know if they are competitively priced with other builder's of dome homes, I'll know more when I get a reply to the email I sent them.  The one thing that may be a minus is that it appears that they use thick metal beams and lots of re-bar.  But one plus is that you can erect the structure, line the inside with foam sheeting, and spray concrete from the outside.  Different steps that achieve the same results as the Monolithic domes.  They even boast of being able to drive a cement truck or bulldozer over the structure.

Those are beautiful looking underground homes!
One of those I had seen on another site and posted it here on one of the Underground Topics.
Good concept -  the house blending in with rocks and then sod all above...
Personally I would hide it even more but a person could customize it.
