The Svalbard Global Seed Vault, Linda White's Topic
« Reply #3 on: July 13, 2010, 03:52:34 PM »
Seven congressmen, led by Senator Benjamin L. Cardin (D-MD), spent their 4th of July weekend  hand delivering seeds to the Svalbard Global Seed Vault in Norway. The self proclaimed "Doomsday Vault" contains seeds from more than 525,000 crop varieties.  It was constructed as a back-up storage facility to protect the existing world food supplies from destruction in the event of a devastating global catastrophe. Others believe it is part of a global conspiracy. The facility is constructed deep within a mountain to withstand changing variations in sea levels and even events such as a nuclear explosion. (thus the term "Doomsday Vault) The congressman delivered a wide variety of seeds including melons, peanuts, and beans. The seeds were donated by the United States Department Of Agriculture's National Plant Germplasm System in Colorado. Senator Cardin compared the seed vault in Svalbard to a giant safety deposit box.

Why are our congressman spending their fourth of July weekends in the frozen arctic tundra putting seeds in a Doomsday Vault? Does this further the assumption of a new world order/global  conspiracy? This vault rarely gets any attention by the mainstream media, but the leaders of many countries seem to frequent the location. Why has the doomsday vault been such a top priority recently?

Maybe they know time is getting short.

Wikipedia article on the Norway Seed Vaults...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Svalbard_Global_Seed_Vault   Svalbard Global Seed Vault
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Svalbard Global Seed Vault (Norwegian: Svalbard globale frøhvelv) is a secure seedbank located on the Norwegian island of Spitsbergen near the town of Longyearbyen in the remote Arctic Svalbard archipelago, about 1,300 kilometres (810 mi) from the North Pole.[4] The facility preserves a wide variety of plant seeds in an underground cavern. The seeds are duplicate samples, or "spare" copies, of seeds held in gene banks worldwide. The seed vault is an attempt to provide insurance against the loss of seeds in genebanks, as well as a refuge for seeds in the case of large-scale regional or global crises. The seed vault is managed under terms spelled out in a tripartite agreement between the Norwegian government, the Global Crop Diversity Trust (GCDT) and the Nordic Genetic Resource Center (NordGen).[5]
Construction of the seed vault, which cost approximately NOK 45 million (US$9 million), was funded entirely by the Government of Norway.[6] Storage of seeds in the seed vault is free-of-charge. Operational costs will be paid by Norway and the Global Crop Diversity Trust. Primary funding for the Trust comes from organisations, such as the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and from various governments worldwide.[7]

History

The Nordic Gene Bank (NGB) has stored a backup of Nordic plant germplasm as frozen seeds in an abandoned coal mine at Svalbard since 1984. The NGB has deposited more than 10,000 seed samples of more than 2,000 cultivars of 300 different species over the years. In addition, seed samples from the Southern African Development Community have been safely duplicated with the Nordic collection for some years. Both the Nordic and African collections have been transferred to the new Svalbard Global Seed Vault facility. Since 1 January 2008, the Nordic Gene Bank is an integrated part of the newly formed NordGen.
