Weather on Mars is much more severe than here on earth because it doesn't have an atmosphere to protect it. The planet is still moving through space at tremendous speeds and spinning while being bombarded by solar flares - so yes Mars has massive storms (NASA has reported storms covering nearly 1/3 of the Mars surface in the past). They last much longer, etc. Mars also has higher mountains than the earth does, despite being smaller.

NASA even claims that the "global warming" on Mars is due to those massive sandstorms (ignoring the fact the common denominator to all planets heating up right now would be the sun itself). Remember a few years back that one of the rovers was losing power because the solar panels had become covered in sand - until another sandstorm "cleaned" the solar panel off.

Its not just the Native Americans that have connections to Mars - Egypt's Cairo literally means Mars in ancient Arabic. Sumerian texts (as translated by Sitchin) indicate the face on Mars is the final burial place of Alahu. Again, it could be a string of coincidences, or perhaps the true history of the earth is much more exotic than we are led to believe.

From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atmosphere_of_Mars
" The atmosphere of Mars is relatively thin and is composed mostly of carbon dioxide (95.32%). "

From http://www.universetoday.com/22587/atmosphere-of-mars/
" The atmosphere of Mars is less than 1% of Earth's, so it does not protect the planet from the Sun's radiation "

I consider less than 1% as not having one lol. It's part of the reason why global warming makes no sense. Nitrogen is roughly 78% of our atmosphere and is a greenhouse gas that apparently does not cause global warming while carbon which is currently 385 parts per million or .0385% is responsible for all warming. All models for global warming are completely inaccurate and all the planets around our sun are warming almost as much. (I suspect the 28% increase in warming here on earth is caused by our atmosphere - including the nitrogen).

The carbon dioxide being the overwhelming part of the less than 1% is also obvious - the red surface of Mars screams oxidation and with no plant life, the carbon dioxide is the only thing there. The real hair splitters question is there really a less than 1% atmosphere or is it simply that a trace amount of oxide that is constantly being formed on the planet hasn't had time yet to dissipate into space?

Another "anomaly" on Mars is that is has two huge methane wells that continuously pump methane into the air - yet methane which is 4 parts hydrogen per carbon doesn't reflect that much hydrogen in its atmosphere. Hydrogen is lighter than the frozen carbon particles in its "atmosphere" which allow them to escape much easier than the heavier frozen carbon particles.

Scientists agree that Mars has an atmosphere, but lost its magnetosphere which allows the continuous bombardment of the Martian atmosphere by solar radiation destroying it bit by bit. It is simply my belief that much like Pluto losing its planet status, the status of the Mars atmosphere will soon change from "trace" to "does not exist." It is by everyone's account over 99% gone.
