'First off, I have had chronic asthma for many years and this
condition required me to take medication every day. It was so bad
that I was taking Flovent 10 mg twice a day/2 puffs and Albuteral for
emergency cases. I started taking fish and flax seed oil about four
months ago and have not taken any asthma medicine for about three
months. I just want everyone to know that my asthma condition was so
bad that I would run out of Flovent for a few days and end up having
asthma attacks. This required me to take the Albuteral a least twice
a day. My oil regimen consists of taking 1 tablespoon of Carlson Fish
Oil liquid before I retire for bed and 1 - 1 1/2 tablespoons of
Barlean's High Lignan Flax Seed Oil in the morning before breakfast
or an hour after breakfast. I will not say my asthma is totally cured
because I am using the fish and flax oil as a substitute to the
asthma medication. If I were to stop taking the oils it is very
possible that my asthma condition will return. I will continue to
take the oils because they have freed me of having to take asthma
medication plus there are so many benefits of taking these oils.
There is plenty of information online about the health benefits of
taking oils that contain Omega 3 fatty acids."

Another group of foods for asthmatics to avoid is those high in sulfites.  List here: http://foodallergysupport.olicentral.com/index.php?action=page;sa=SulfiteFoodsPPM1

The Linus Pauling Institute of Oregon State University suggests that a molybdenum deficiency may be at the root of sulfite asthma, and recommends that at least 45 micrograms be taken daily as a preventive measure.  http://lpi.oregonstate.edu/mic/minerals/molybdenum

Sulfite test strips are also available to ascertain the sulfite content of wines (or just buy organic wines).

R.R. Book - great info, thanks!  :) I had not read about the sulfite test strips, wow!

Years ago I heard about sulfites on salad bars and stopped consuming those so much...
Then, dropped one lazy convenience food - instant mashed potatoes. Has sulfites.
(I never did the instant all that much, but it was a temporary weakness of mine something fast and yummy with butter. ) :)

Lately we get some of the wine at a health food store about a mile away. No added sulfites.

Just a note:  I don't drink a ton of wine but have found if I consume a (very) moderate, occasional drink or two of beer wine vodka whatever I am actually experience less health emergencies than when I am a tea totaler. Many years ago my Mother showed me an article about the Hunzas, longest living humans on the planet. They did not smoke anything but enjoyed daily use of their home-brewed wine or beer.  Following that I read (Prevention Mag perhaps) read that people who enjoy a small amt alcoholic beverages statistically live longer than those who do not drink anything.
I do like to get the kosher wines a couple times a year... cherry, blackberry etc. Beer - perhaps three beers in the entire course of the summer. Wine  - perhaps six drinks of it in a year.
Exception: Some family birthday parties, we are known to guzzle down over a bottle apiece. :) For all of you who never drink, well, more power to you. That's fine too. I respect people's choices.
Same goes with meat vs no meat. What works for a person is fine. I have a niece who has been vegetarian her entire life and she is so healthy and beautiful. She and her hubby vegans now.
I am finding my body seems to be demanding some omega 3 fish and some butter or ghee...
I am not sure what I will do in the long run have been vegetarian on/off for decades... over all no red meat for a long time.
RE meat: The Hunzas - at the time the article was written - only consumed meat if one of their goats or sheep perished. They would thoroughly roast it, sort of ceremoniously and the whole village would partake.

Must admit that I'm having reservations about storing some for emergencies, but it would be a real comfort food for the kids, in lieu of whole potatoes if our crop should fail.

The store owner says that these plants need extreme drainage, and that peat will not even be adequate.  He suggests sand on top of pebbles on top of a raised bed, with the plants dangling from the edge of the bed.  Might work as a seldom-watered houseplant for that matter.
