Top 10 States for Living Off the Grid
BY TARA DODRILL

4. Ohio
For some baffling reason, the Buckeye State is often completely omitted from “best off the grid living” lists. The southern part of the state boasts incredibly low land prices, low property taxes, low crime rates, an incredibly low cost of living, and an abundance of natural resources

So why do you think Ohio is not included?  There must be some reason, which I cannot imagine right now.  OK, here's one possibility:  maybe Ohio is one of the states that, on average, receives less sun than many states, and "off-grid" usually implies solar.  My best guess.

Hi Linda, I just saw your reply.
No idea why Ohio would not be included. i have seen land ads for Athens, OH which seems a good area... but not posted on that particular site.
Ohio is one state I am interested in if I can find some elevated areas...in certain parts of Ohio...

Yowbarb Note: May not be considered cheap $300,000 but split 6 ways it might not be so bad be a good survival area, in general. Elevation not so high so growing of food might be more possible than some of the other properties i see.
Elevation but the town of Sandpoint is only about 2,000 ft. It is  on a huge lake but may be possible to get land at a bit of height over the shoreline.

American Redoubt
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A map that shows the boundaries of The American Redoubt.
The American Redoubt is a political migration movement first proposed in 2011 by survivalist novelist and blogger James Wesley Rawles which designates three states in the northwestern United States (Idaho, Montana, Wyoming), and adjoining portions of two other states (eastern Oregon, and eastern Washington) as a safe haven for conservative, libertarian-leaning Christians and Jews. Rawles chose this area due to its low population density and lack of natural hazards. However, several major nuclear war targets are located in the area, like the large ICBM bases in Malstrom, Montana and Warren, Wyoming or the Idaho National Laboratory with its nuclear reactors developing and testing facilities; massive fallout should be expected.

Yowbarb note: A lot of the ads in the recent survival Realty pages are in The American Redoubt... really far north, beautiful country, but near some reactors, etc.
Realizing a lot of the recent properties in survival realty are really far north. Beautiful country but if it is to be a year round home, a person would need to be prepared for those winters...
Wonder how well a person could grow food up there...

True, but only until the pole crust shift.  It will then become sub-tropical.

But, Sandpoint is in the Deformed Craton, which is experiencing many earthquakes.

A friend moved to Kalispell Montana in 2012 and this year was the first time she's been able to have a garden, after trying repeatedly.  Growing season is short, and wildlife and wind make it very difficult.  But after trying for so long she did finally meet with some success, although not everything grows/grew well.  So the issue of growing food is important, even if you're anxiously waiting for a tropical or sub-tropical climate to appear.

I'm not saying greenhouses would solve everything. It is something to learn more about.
If I was stuck in a cold climate, one of the first thing i would do is build greenhouses...
