My favorite "doing nothing" lately has involved turning out the lamps at bedtime and sitting quietly with one of our cats, who has been so mesmerized by the lights and ornaments on the Christmas tree that he refuses to leave it except to eat and use the litter box!  Amazing how that moment with him draws me back to childhood.  :)

Just reading your post makes a person more relaxed.  What a cool cat he must be, groovin' on the lights.  And yes, sitting in a darkened room with a few colored lights is relaxing and soothing.  Maybe it's reminiscent of watching a campfire, at night, in the summer, and surrounded by cricket sounds, owl sounds, etc.

On a related note, it was one of those health/medical columnists who recently talked about techniques that are being used to help prevent dementia, and one of them was being exposed to infrared light.  IIRC, he mentioned that by watching a fire (thinking now of seeing the fire in the wood stove, through the glass) one is receiving at least some IR rays.  It surely beats watching a CFL or LED.

Agree that watching a fire is much healthier!
