John Perkins wrote an intriguing tale in his book, (Confessions of an Economic Hitman, where he details how it works, which you've summarized nicely.  After some years of his work, he realized the misery he was partly responsible for, and then turned his life around by extricating himself from the whole mess.  I think I read where he has updated his work, possibly into a new edition?  Or movie?  At least he eventually did develop a conscience.
