NASA lost two more spacecraft this week, the Dawn and Kepler, saying that they ran out of gas...

How many have been lost now, just in the past year or so?

SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule welcomes ISS astronaut aboard after docking

Astronaut Anne McClain has become the first aboard the new crew capsule

The uncrewed spacecraft launched from Nasa’s Kennedy Space Centre in Florida at 2.49am local time (7.49am UK time) on March 2 as planned, on top of a Falcon 9 rocket, carrying a dummy pilot called Ripley – a nod to Sigourney Weaver’s character in the Alien movies – loaded with sensors to feed back information on the journey’s progress. It successfully made contact with the orbiting space station where McClain was able to float inside and record a video beamed back across the internet.

PRIVATE MOON LANDING TOMORROW: When humans return to the Moon, it might not be NASA sending them. While America's next Moon rocket is billions of dollars over budget and years behind schedule, a small Israeli company is poised to touchdown on the Moon tomorrow. Their robot named "Beresheet" is scheduled to land on Mare Serenitatis (the Sea of Serenity) on April 11th around 3 pm Eastern time. The event will be livestreamed by SpaceIL, the first private company to land on lunar soil. Robots now, humans next? Stay tuned.

X-37B Military Space Plane's Latest Mystery Mission Passes 600 Days
By Mike Wall 3 hours ago Spaceflight

Exactly what it's doing up there is unclear.

The U.S. Air Force's X-37B space plane has now been circling Earth for more than 600 days on its latest mystery mission.

SEE [ US Air Force's Secretive X-37B Space Plane By Karl Tate March 03, 2011(Infographic)://www.space.com/75-x-37b-spaceplane.html ]

Article continued: The reusable robotic vehicle, which looks like a miniature version of NASA's space shuttle orbiters, launched atop a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida on Sept. 7, 2017.

As of today (April 30), the space plane has been aloft for 601 days, on a mission known as Orbital Test Vehicle 5 (OTV-5) because it's the fifth flight of the X-37B program.

It's unclear what exactly the spacecraft is doing up there. X-37B missions are classified, and Air Force officials tend to speak of project goals in general terms, as this excerpt from the X-37B fact sheet shows: "The primary objectives of the X-37B are twofold: reusable spacecraft technologies for America's future in space and operating experiments which can be returned to, and examined, on Earth."

Still, the Air Force does divulge some payloads flying on X-37B missions. For example, we know that OTV-5 includes the Advanced Structurally Embedded Thermal Spreader experiment (ASETS-II), which is measuring the performance of electronics and oscillating heat pipes in the space environment.

The Air Force has at least two X-37B vehicles, both of which were built by Boeing. Each space plane is 29 feet (8.8 meters) long and 9.6 feet (2.9 m) tall, with a wingspan of almost 15 feet (4.6 m). The solar-powered spacecraft have payload bays about the size of a pickup-truck bed.

The International Space Station experienced a "huge" power failure on Monday, meaning that technicians were not able to pinpoint the cause of the blackout and restore power.  The station will be uninhabitable until reliable power can be restored.

A Space-X shuttle that was scheduled to launch today to re-supply the ISS is expected to be cancelled.

This is just one more incident in a series of mishaps to the ISS over the past several months.

INDIAN MOON LAUNCH TODAY: India is on its way to the Moon. Earlier today, the country's space agency launched the 4-ton Chandrayaan-2 spacecraft from the edge of the Bay of Bengal. The payload contains a lunar orbiter, a lander and a 6-wheeled rover, scheduled to touch down on Sept. 7th. This marks India's first attempt to make a 'soft' landing on the Moon — a feat so far achieved only by the United States, Russia and China.

SpaceX's massive Starship prototype lifts off

New York (CNN Business)A prototype of SpaceX's Mars rocket roared to life Thursday night, lifting the vehicle into the air for a landmark test.

It was the first time the experimental craft, nicknamed "Starhopper," flew free without being tethered to the ground.
SpaceX's goal was to lift the spacecraft about 65 feet into the air before gently landing it nearby — what's SpaceX called a "hop test." It's not clear exactly how high the craft flew. Footage captured by reporters present at the South Texas launch site show fire and smoke erupting from Starhopper's massive Raptor rocket engine, obscuring the vehicle from view.
SpaceX CEO Elon Musk said the flight was a success.

"Water towers *can* fly," he joked in a tweet, referencing Starhopper's likeness to a cylindrical water tank. He also shared views of the launch that were captured by a nearby drone and a camera near the Raptor engine.
Musk tweeted that SpaceX will next attempt a 200 meter, or 650 foot, hop test "in a week or two."

Starhopper's successful run came one day after a hop attempt was aborted three seconds after the Raptor engine fired up. The craft never left the ground, and stray flames appeared to shoot out from the top of the vehicle, but no serious damage was done. Musk said the hop test was called off because the fuel was "colder than expected," causing an issue with pressure levels inside the vehicle.
Starhopper is designed to be an early precursor to a deep-space exploration rocket called Starship, and Musk has said rapid development of the technology is a top priority for SpaceX.
The latest design for Starship, which was earlier referred to as BFR, show it riding into orbit atop the most powerful rocket booster ever built. SpaceX hopes to use the launch system to deliver massive loads of satellites into orbit, and eventually to shuttle humans out into the solar system to explore and colonize Mars.
Yusaku Maezawa, the Japanese billionaire who landed a deal with SpaceX to one day use a Starship spacecraft to circle the moon, tweeted praised to Musk.
"Congrats!!! Moon is right there!" he wrote.

Feb. 6, 2020  RELEASE 20-012
Record-Setting NASA Astronaut, Crewmates Return from Space Station

NASA astronaut Christina Koch is helped out of the Soyuz MS-13 spacecraft just minutes after she, Roscosmos cosmonaut Alexander Skvortsov, and ESA astronaut Luca Parmitano, landed their Soyuz MS-13 capsule in a remote area near the town of Zhezkazgan, Kazakhstan on Thursday, Feb. 6, 2020. Koch returned to Earth after logging 328 days in space --- the longest spaceflight in history by a woman --- as a member of Expeditions 59-60-61 on the International Space Station. Skvortsov and Parmitano returned after 201 days in space where they served as Expedition 60-61 crew members onboard the station.

After setting a record for the longest single spaceflight in history by a woman, NASA astronaut Christina Koch returned to Earth Thursday, along with Soyuz Commander Alexander Skvortsov of the Russian space agency Roscosmos and Luca Parmitano of ESA (European Space Agency).

The trio departed the International Space Station at 12:50 a.m. EST and made a safe, parachute-assisted landing at 4:12 a.m. (3:12 p.m. Kazakhstan time) southeast of the remote town of Dzhezkazgan, Kazakhstan.

Koch’s extended mission will provide researchers the opportunity to observe effects of long-duration spaceflight on a woman as the agency plans to return humans to the Moon under the Artemis program and prepare for human exploration of Mars.

Koch launched March 14, 2019, alongside fellow NASA astronaut Nick Hague and Russian cosmonaut Alexey Ovchinin. Her first journey into space of 328 days is the second-longest single spaceflight by a U.S. astronaut and also places her seventh on the list of cumulative time in space for American astronauts with one or more missions.

Supporting NASA’s goals for future human landings on the Moon, Koch completed 5,248 orbits of the Earth and a journey of 139 million miles, roughly the equivalent of 291 trips to the Moon and back. She conducted six spacewalks during 11 months on orbit, including the first three all-woman spacewalks, spending 42 hours and 15 minutes outside the station. She witnessed the arrival of a dozen visiting spacecraft and the departure of another dozen.

For Parmitano and Skvortsov, this landing completed a 201-day stay in space, 3,216 orbits of Earth and a journey of 85.2 million miles. They launched last July with NASA’s Andrew Morgan. Morgan also is participating in an extended duration mission on the orbiting laboratory and will return to Earth April 17.

Completing his second mission, Parmitano now has logged 367 days in space, more than any ESA astronaut in history. During his time in space for Expeditions 60 and 61, Parmitano conducted four spacewalks, totaling 25 hours and 30 minutes. He has now conducted six spacewalks in his career, totaling 33 hours and 9 minutes. Parmitano was commander of Expedition 61.

Skvortsov completed his third mission and a total of 546 days in space, placing him 15th on the all-time spaceflight endurance list.

Following post-landing medical checks, the crew will return to the recovery staging city in Karaganda, Kazakhstan, aboard Russian helicopters. Koch and Parmitano will board a NASA plane bound for Cologne, Germany, where Parmitano will be greeted by ESA officials for his return home. Koch will continue home to Houston. Skvortsov will board a Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center aircraft to return to his home in Star City, Russia.

The Expedition 61 crew contributed to hundreds of experiments in biology, Earth science, human research, physical sciences and technology development, including improvements to the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer in an effort to extend its life and support its mission of looking for evidence of dark matter and testing 3D biological printers to print organ-like tissues in microgravity.

With the undocking of the Soyuz MS-13 spacecraft with Koch, Skvortsov, and Parmitano aboard, Expedition 62 officially began aboard the station, with NASA astronauts Jessica Meir and Morgan as flight engineers and Oleg Skripochka of Roscosmos as station commander. They will remain on board as a three-person crew until early April, when NASA astronaut Chris Cassidy and Russian cosmonauts Nikolai Tikhonov and Andrei Babkin will launch to the station.
