THE MOON AND MARS: Mars is approaching Earth for a close encounter in March. Start looking for the Red Planet now:
Tonight it is shining brighter than a 1st-magnitude star beside the waning full Moon.
The view through a backyard telescope is dynamite: sky map.

Yowbarb:
About 9:30 PM EST I went out to see the moon and Mars and got a good look.  :)
I was able to view it on and off; cloud cover going back and forth.
It's a beautiful sight,

Yowbarb:
I saw two bright objects up in the western sky tonight. One was amazingly bright. I remembered Spaceweather had posted about the planets lined up so yes that's what they are. Jupiter on the left  Venus, right,  the brighter one.

MARS AT OPPOSITION: Mars is approaching opposition. On March 3-5, the Red Planet will be up all night long, opposite the sun and as close to Earth as it will get in 2012. Mars shines overhead at midnight 6 times brighter than a 1st magnitude star and looks great through a backyard telescope.
