Am already noticing that some of our fruit trees have stopped bearing flowers since last year.  Ben seems to suggest that it's temporary though in the run-up to the pole shift?

This is awful news, RR and you had not mentioned that before.  I have to wonder. after reading how the excess radiation due to ozone depletion will "sterilize trees".  Trying to be an optimist here, wouldn't that mean only for the year in which the ozone was too thin, and all the pollen and ova were presumably destroyed or denatured?

But unless the tree itself lost the ability to produce pollen or ova, depending on type of tree, wouldn't the other/following years have a chance to exhibit normal flowering and fruit production?  Fingers are crossed for sure.

Have you had an opportunity to see any of those ozone depletion maps, with levels in various geographic areas, giving you an idea of where your locale stands?  (I haven't but imagine the maps are somewhere out there.)

Not sure whether the magnetosphere may take just one season or several to heal.  Seems that if it were only one season left to go before the trees begin producing again, then the shift must be imminent.

A more frightening possibility might be that we are still several seasons away from the shift, and would then need to scrape our diet together from fewer and fewer resources.  How long could that play out without a dystopian earth becoming yet more dystopic?

On a more positive note, as long as the radiation didn't actually kill the trees and their reproductive organelles, we might be able to recover on the other side of the shift, provided we withstand it, our fellow man and PTB.

Meanwhile, the only thing that we can do is to continue planting trees as fast as Johnny Appleseed, while conserving some germplasm to be sown later, and sourcing our food wherever else we can.

As the saying goes, it's always a good year to grow something, including some tree fruits.

Here's a real-time ozone map which Ilinda had referred to (ours in the dark blue seems sufficient at the moment as of 3/31/00):

I tried searching for some data on the correlation between Dobson Units of Ozone and agricultural output, but was unable to find anything.  If anyone knows of one, please post.

What varieties of your fruit trees are experiencing the new problem of failure to produce blossons?

It's still a little too soon to tell for this season, but will report back.

Our Shinko pear trees are in full bud and threatening to blossom and we're crossing fingers they wait a bit.  But blossoming is only a tiny part of the process of getting fruit, because I/we cannot tell you how very many years the trees flowered so beautifully and prolifically, and then a hard freeze came along and the rest if history.

Those are some of those pesky details that non-growers are not aware of.  Growing food is risky business.

Agreed it is risky, and we paradoxically diversify our risk of hunger by continuing to farm or garden in spite of sporadic failures, so as not to rely solely upon the grocer.  It also seems that the more varied crops we can grow, the less the risk, and then we can select the best from our trials and narrow our menu down to what really works in our own setting?
