Yowbarb: See movie of explosion, click link: http://www.spaceweather.com/

SUNSPOT EXPLODES, HURLS CME AT EARTH: On Feb. 12th, the magnetic canopy of sunspot AR2699 exploded--for more than 6 hours. The slow-motion blast produced a C1-class solar flare and hurled a coronal mass ejection (CME) almost directly toward Earth. This movie from the Solar and Heliospheric Observtory (SOHO) shows the CME leaving the sun.

The CME could arrive as early as Feb. 14th, although Feb 15th is more likely. NOAA forecasters say there is a 60% chance of G1-class geomagnetic storms with isolated periods of stronger G2 storming. The effectiveness of the CME could be enhanced by a stream of solar wind that was already en route to Earth when the sunspot exploded. If the approaching CME sweeps up plasma from that stream, snowplow-style, it could strike Earth's magnetic field with extra potency.

Arctic sky watchers should be alert for auroras in the nights ahead.

Wonder if they need to reinstate the school fallout drills from the old days?  Or do they still do those?

Now that they might really be needed, that's probably the last thing they would do.  LOL

Absolutely - it wouldn't fit into the "last man standing" or "winner take all" plan of PTB...

GEOMAGNETIC UNREST POSSIBLE: A weak stream of solar wind is expected to engulf Earth on August 4th, possibly disturbing our planet's polar magnetic field. The gaseous material is flowing from a poorly-organized hole in the sun's atmosphere. High-latitude sky watchers may be able to see faint auroras this weekend.

Belated reply, I rremember having to do those for years! Wow, glad I don't have to do that, anymore, as if a desk would make ANY difference, ha!!

LATEST SOLAR NEWS:
(Aug 26 1010UTC) The phi angle of the solar wind indicates that a strong, direct magnetic connection streamed directly from sun to earth, was sustained for hours, and drove a Kp7 (Level3) geomagnetic storm.

SUBSIDING STORMS: Earth's magnetic field is quieting again after a night of storming. G1- and G2-class storm conditions were observed on Nov. 4th and 5th when a high-speed stream of solar wind made contact with our planet's magnetic field. The show's not over. Although the storms are subsiding, intermittent Arctic auroras remain possible tonight as the solar wind continues to blow faster than 500 km/s.

QUIET SUN MAKES 'MUSICAL WAVES' IN EARTH'S MAGNETOSPHERE: Last week in Norway, a space weather observatory detected sine waves of exceptional purity rippling through Earth's polar magnetic field. The waves, which persisted for hours with nearly perfect pitch, have been linked to "tearing instabilities" and explosions in Earth's magnetic tail--not to mention bright auroras in Arctic skies.
