GEOMAGNETIC STORMS UNDERWAY: A stream of fast-moving (700 km/s) solar wind is buffeting Earth's magnetic field today, Nov. 10th, and this is causing G2-class geomagnetic storms. Arctic sky watchers should be alert for auroras after nightfall

MOSTLY QUIET WITH A CHANCE OF FLARES: Solar activity remains low. However, this could change if sunspot AR2454 continues to grow as it has done for the past two days. The active region is beginning to crackle with C-class solar flares, minor explosions that could intensify if the sunspot's expansion continues apace

TWO CMEs, ONE MIGHT BE EARTH-DIRECTED: A pair of CMEs--one bright and one faint--billowed away from the sun on Nov. 29th. Click to view a movie from the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory:

The bright CME (pictured above) will miss Earth; it came from an explosion on the far side of the sun and is not heading in our direction. The faint one, which appears later in the movie, could be geoeffective. It appears to be associated with a minor eruption of Earth-facing sunspot AR2459. Stay tuned for further analysis about the possible origin and impact of the faint CME. Solar flare alerts: text or voice

GEOMAGNETIC STORM: A G2-class geomagnetic storm is in progress on Dec. 20th as Earth moves through the wake of a CME that struck our planet's magnetic field yesterday. High-latitude sky watchers should be alert for auroras. Aurora alerts

Strong G3 storm coming soon...

G3 (Strong) Geomagnetic Storming Likely 30 December
published: Tuesday, December 29, 2015 17:43 UTC

The geomagnetic storming watch for 30 December has been upgraded to a G3 (Strong), with a G1 (Minor) storming watch still in effect for 31 December. These watches are in response to consistent WSA-Enlil modeling results and SWPC forecasters' determination that a coronal mass ejection (CME) impact is likely just after mid-UTC day on 30 December with residual CME effects continuing into 31 December. The CME impact may cause a sudden impulse geomagnetic response at Earth, likely resulting in the G3 conditions. The CME was associated with a long-duration M1 flare (R1-Minor radio blackout) that peaked at 1245 UTC (0745 ET) on 28 December. Keep checking the SWPC website for continued updates.

WEAK IMPACT: As expected, a CME hit Earth's magnetic field on Dec. 31st (00:30 UT). The impact, however, was weak and did not produce a geomagnetic storm. Auroras are still possible in the hours ahead as Earth moves through the CME's turbulent wake, but so far this has not been a significant space weather event.

And thank heavens for that bit of good news!

Space Weather News for Jan. 1, 2016
http://spaceweather.com
FIRST AURORAS OF THE NEW YEAR: A CME strike on New Year's Eve has sparked a moderately strong geomagnetic storm (happening now) and the first auroras of  2016. High-latitude sky watchers are reporting bright auroras in both hemispheres as Earth moves through the strongly magnetized wake of the CME.  NOAA forecasters say there is a 75% chance that the storms will continue through Jan. 1st, subsiding to 45% on Jan. 2nd.  Visit Spaceweather.com for images and updates.

Realtime geomagnetic storm alerts are available from Spaceweathertext.com (text) and Spaceweatherphone.com (voice).

 Aurora
Taken by Stuart Walker on December 31, 2015 @ Glenfarg, Scotland.

Details:
Having photographed a nice camera friendly aurora on Hogmany, our neighbours let off some fireworks for the New Year. They were modest compared to the organised display in Edinburgh but looked great with the background of the ongoing aurora.
