Foot Soaks -

Mineral Salt Blend
A soothing blend for foot and hand soaks for all ages and skin types.
Frequent use helps to restore or maintain magnesium in the body, much needed for cell health, and stress management. The following formula is from the book AROMATHERAPY: Soothing Remedies to Restore,  Rejuvenate and Heal by Valerie Gennari Cooksley RN (She is a British Nurse). This book is on  It is a huge favorite and has sold millions. An excellent source for essential oil formulas. It is one of the text books in the Aromatherapy Course through Dr. Christopher's School of Natural Healing.

5 parts Epsom Salt (Magnesium Sulfate) food grade,
3 parts Sea Salt (Real Salt brand, Sodium Chloride unrefined),
1 parts Baking Soda (Sodium bicarbonate) in ratio of 5:3:1.

 This formula is a standard in spa use world wide.

Add 2 quarts of comfortably hot water to a basin.
Add 2 tablespoons of mineral salt blend and swish to mix.
Soak feet or hands up to 20 min. May rinse if desired.

Skin absorbs nutrients and toxins as well as rids the body of materials. Soaking opens pores to help this process.
Soaking feet or hands relaxes the body before sleep, or in stressful times.  It’s a nice activity for anyone of any age.  For those who are unwilling or unable to soak their feet, soaking hands instead will still give great benefit.
Follow with a gentle massage to the skin using a food grade or cosmetic grade oil. A food grade oil would be grapeseed, safflower, sunflower, canola, coconut that is normally used for food as in salad dressing or cooking. A cosmetic grade oil would be apricot kernal, jojoba, fractionated coconut oil. The label will state what it is approved for either food or cosmetic.

Notes on the ingredients:
Epsom salt is magnesium sulfate U.S.P. MgSO4.7H2O. It is available in most grocery stores, pharmacies, and big box stores. It is in bags of 2 to 4 lbs, often on sale, or buy one get one free. In April 2015 4lb bags were about $3.89 each at Walgreens, but store brand was 2 for that price. There does not seem to be any difference in brands other than variations in the coarsness of the crystals.

However, read the label. You do want "food grade" epsom salt. This is approved for internal use and some people use it as a "saline laxative" for relief of occasional constipation (2 to 6 level teaspoons per day in 8oz of water, add lemon juice to improve taste). Approved for use for children 6 to 12 years old 1 to 2 level teaspoons per day. Consult doctor for children under 6.

Food grade is the purest and for soaking the body you want pure ingredients to not inadvertently absorb unwanted materials. The brand Equaline is distributed by Supervalue Inc, Eden Prairie, MN 55344 USA.

The second ingredient is sea salt, true sea salt, one that is not refined or steamed but only ground. Celtic Gray Sea salt is one that is popular but it is derived directly from surface sea water. Real Salt is a brand that is mined from an ancient pure source in the US used by native Americans. The brand name is Real Salt and found in health food sections of grocery stores. In April 2015 it cost about $9 for a 1lb bag.

This salt is important for the mineral content. Regular salt will not do and should not be used, it will draw moisture out of the skin. True Himalayan pink salt is also fine. Verify the source as some pink salt originates in South America. Trace minerals needed for health nervous system and cell metabolism are abundant in true sea salts. Ancient sea beds have these in concentrated amounts. Another source is mined in Hawaii from deep undersea deposits that have not had contact with today's polluted ocean waters. I find it too expensive to be practical.

Sodium bicarbonate the third ingredient, also known as baking soda, is used to affect the pH of the water and help skin absorption of minerals.

To use with Essential Oils:
Add 2 or 3 drops of essential oils to 2 tablespoons of the mineral salt blend, mix well and then add to the container of water, swish to dissolve and then proceed with soaking. Mixing WITH the mineral salt first breaks up the oil into smaller droplets allowing better mixture with the oil, and less oily film.

Use 2 drops TOTAL of strong oils like lavender, peppermint, tea tree, eucalyptus, ylang-ylang, balsams. Use 3 drops of milder oils like grapefruit, mandarin, orange. Do not use fragrance oils, only PURE therapeutic grade essential oils. Some that are good for foot baths are : Lavender – relaxing, cell regenerate; Peppermint – stimulating for circulation, great for cold feet or circulation problems; Tea tree – toe fungus, athlete’s food, foot odor, foot infections. Tea Tree may be applied undiluted to areas of toe nail fungus or between toes. This works well for many people. Some people are allergic to it and the eucalyptus  oils. Some do not like the aroma of Tea Tree oil. It blends well with Lavender.

This mineral salt formula stores very well, and can be made up in large quantity.  It sells well in farmers markets in quantities from one use (2 tablespoons) to 8 oz net wt. I also add magnesium chloride crystals to it for personal use. This does not store well because magnesium chloride crystals pull moisture from the air and turn the mineral salt blend to mush. I keep the magnesium chloride in a separate tightly closed container and add just what I need at the time of the foot bath. I use 1/2 teaspoon of crystals since it is very concentrated.

Magnesium chloride is the most absorbable form of magnesium for the human body. There are several websites selling it. A small quantity will go a long way. Look for an article just on magnesium chloride.

Gout can cause kidney problems, such as kidney stones or kidney failure, if left untreated. Uric acid build up forms crystals that lodge in tissues and cause pain. Use cider vinegar with caution – may help but is slow and may cause pain as crystals dissolve; review water intake and fluids in general; review diet for foods related to gout like sugar and alcohol].

Frequent foot cramps: Muscle spasms in the feet can signal an electrolyte imbalance – a lack of magnesium or potassium – or also mean that you have low blood sugar or poor circulation. Pinched nerves and some medications, such as diuretics, can also cause spasms. Clubbed toenails: When the nails appear more rounded on top and then curve downward, this could be a symptom of lung disease. Clubbed toenails can also be caused by heart disease, liver, and digestive disorders, or certain infections. [see medical professional for diagnosis before trying to treat naturally.]

Yellow, flaky toenails: Toenail fungus, also called onchomycosis, is usually benign, says Dr. Salber. But if not treated, the infection can cause a loss of dexterity and can spread beyond the toe into the body. [Tea Tree essential oil apply undiluted to the areas after foot soak, may want to wear socks to bed; daily apply the oil even if not soaking feet.]
