Still trialing indoor lettuce in a low-tech sunny window without supplemental lighting, and have found arugula to be the happiest of all the transplanted greens, though perhaps the least bushy:

Modern high-R-value window glass
excludes a large percentage of ultraviolet light
necessary for most crops to thrive.

That will be a joy!  In fact, that is how it's supposed to work!

Ice Age Farmer suggested that anyone interested in learning more about growing ancient grains have a look at the website of the Kusa Seed Society, a California-based conservatory of ancient grains which has an on-line seed catalog.  They also have educational literature:

And yet another source of seed:

I highly recommend that company for organic/non-GMO seed, as well as Wood Prairie Farm:

They might be almost the only two seed companies in the U.S. that are completely organic, so this is definitely food for thought.  Just learning this makes a person think about all the possible chemical treatments applied to non-organic seeds, and how the average person would have no idea--even the average person who wants to grow organically.

Turtle Tree Seed, just remembered, is another "righteous" seed company, and the bonus is that their seeds also have Demeter Biodynamic certification.  Good remiinder to make sure to have all three catalogs for this spring.  It's difficult not to get excited about planting in a few months.

i have added High Mowing and Woodprairie to my list of sources for seeds. Thanks, guys. This is important stuff.
As oneradionetwork puts it: "know the source".
Source matters; DNA matters; epigenetics matter.

I hadn't heard of that one before Ilinda.  Will add it to my list!

Went to Turtle Tree's website, and of course the first thing that caught my eye was the "Unusual Crops" category:

Here's a little-known technique for accelerating germination of numerous types of seeds:

Smoke them.  Not meaning to set them on fire and inhale, but to light a bee smoker, or the equivalent, and waft smoke on them.

B & T World Seeds has a searchable database of all known species in all hardiness zones that will respond to this method.  To see the entire list at once, select "at least to" and "zone 10":

Quote
"Smoke" contains a butenolide compound produced by certain plants...it speeds up or starts the germination of seeds from many different genera.

Some of the numerous crops that respond well to this technique include brassicas, okras, and several fruit trees.

That's a new idea for sure.  Makes one wonder how the butenolide works on the seeds.  Do the seeds "sense smoke", and thus danger,  and feel the pressure to germiinate and grow, ensuring the continuity of the species?  Or, maybe it's not deep thinking on the part of the seed, but purely chemistry.  Interesting!

Note that liquid smoke works in this study!
There were numerous other studies cited in a Web search, too many to post here.

Thanks for the links.  I did read a few of the abstracts and it might be a common phenomenon throughout much of the plant world, as I have read a number of times how the pines of the Western United States had better reproduction rates decades ago when Nature was allowed to take its course, instead of modern-day human intervention of fire suppression.

Apparent something about a major forest fire seemed to stimulate germination of pine seeds, and in view of this new information it seems it would be the smoke is what contains the stimulus.  All interesting stuff.

I had to laugh at the study that equated liquid smoke from the grocery store with air-borne smoke.  Wonder if that's permissible under organic certification rules? LOL

Makes one wonder if "Liquid Smoke" does indeed contain some of the particulates from a fire, and in that is butenolide?  But personally I wouldn't trust something such as that, as there are probably a bunch of unidentifiable ingredients as well.
