Mystery Internet Outages (Nationwide)
« on: November 06, 2017, 02:36:29 PM »
Seems like a lot of these have been happening recently, thought it would be a good topic for a thread ..

Comcast’s Xfinity internet service (and others) seem to be a bit broken nationwide this morning

Having issues with Comcast this morning? You’re very much not alone.

Right around 10 am Pacific, we started seeing reports from both coasts that the internet had suddenly slowed to a halt. Certain sites would load just fine, but the vast majority (from Reddit to Facebook to TechCrunch) simply timed out. A bit more digging suggested that many people reporting issues were on Comcast’s Xfinity service.

Down Detector’s user-generated outage map shows reports lighting up across the country

Down Detector is also showing a similar spike in reports for Level 3, one of the Tier 1 or “backhaul” providers. If they’re having issues, it’ll ripple out to many other ISPs, including Comcast.

Comcast has acknowledged the issue on their customer service account, saying “some” customers are having issues — but didn’t give any insight as to what’s going on or any ETAs on when it’ll be fixed.

Verizon Wireless Network Suffers Massive Outage Across US   :-[

Verizon Wireless, the largest mobile telecommunications provider in the US, has been experiencing massive outages, with the East Coast and Southern US reportedly hit the hardest, according to RT.

"We are currently experiencing an intermittent voice, text and data services interruption for customers in some markets in the south. Our engineers are aware of the issue and are working diligently to resolve it," the telecom giant’s Support Service posted on Twitter.

It hit here a week ago, and I wondered whether the outage might have any connection with the series of solar flares that were reported as being in progress.

The solar activity is probably the most likely explanation at this time.

Delta Airlines yesterday grounded all domestic flights for most of the day due to a nationwide failure of its computer flight tracking system.  Flight status updates were also down, causing many passengers not to know about the outage until actually arriving at the airport.

This news outlet says that it was a global outage affecting about half of all scheduled flights:

The loss of computer functioning began with a power outage at an Atlanta facility which then cascaded and took down more of their system globally.

A similar situation happened last month to Southwest Airlines with outages over a 4-day period that grounded 2,000 flights.  United Airlines and British Airways also experienced outages that were attributed to reasons other than power failure.

Airline personnel resorted to doing paperwork the old-fashioned way, by hand.

Nationwide CenturyLink outage affecting Colorado!

BOISE, Idaho (AP) — Many CenturyLink customers across the U.S. were without internet Thursday amid a lengthy outage that stretched from New York to California.

The outage began early in the day and continued into the evening. CenturyLink's network was "still experiencing a disruption," but the telecommunications company was working to restore services, Monroe, Louisiana-based CenturyLink said in a statement.

The statement provided no other details, including the cause of the problem and how many customers were affected.

Jessica Rosenworcel, a member of the Federal Communications Commission, said via Twitter it was a nationwide outage and her agency needed to investigate.

In Idaho, the internet problems caused the temporary shutdown of phone services at the Idaho Department of Correction and the state's Department of Education, The Idaho Statesman reported .

Some ATM machines weren't working in Idaho and Montana.

At North Colorado Medical Center in Greeley, Colorado, doctors and nurses for a time had difficulty accessing patient records. Rather than using digital devices, they had to take notes with pencil and paper, according to the Greeley Tribune .

WyoLotto officials said they would postpone announcing Wyoming's winning state lottery numbers and winnings for the day until after the outage was over.

In Arizona, some police agencies said 911 systems crashed temporarily or had intermittent problems. They were directing people with emergencies to call other numbers.

Re: Mystery Internet Outages (Nationwide): Recent timeline
« Reply #6 on: December 30, 2018, 02:35:15 PM »
This post covers recent Internet outages as well as other grid components -

So several events appear to have happened in rapid sequence this month, which may or may not be related:

December 10: The President's National Infrastructure Advisory Council publishes its report via MSM, titled Surviving a Catastrophic Power Outage, in which Americans are warned to prep for a six month outage:

December 19: U.S. troops are withdrawn from Syria

December 22: The federal government partially shuts down on Christmas weekend

December 26: Trump visits Iraq and announces end of U.S. role as world policeman, setting precedent for more troop withdrawals

December 27: Widely filmed sky beams apparently knock out power to a suburb of New Orleans, Louisiana

Same Day: Plasmatic interaction between unknown sky object (?) and the ground near New York Harbor, affecting Edison power station, per some eyewitness accounts

Same Day: Widespread CenturyLink Telecommunications (based in Louisiana) outage affects ATM's in several states.

Same Day: Widespread 911 outage in the U.S.

Next Day: Discussion on Marfoogle News of people not receiving automatic deposit payroll checks

Someone or something is hard at work playing the Grinch this holiday season, though I do agree with having a balanced federal budget.  Why must the budget fight happen over Christmas, catching federal employees and their families in the middle?

With PTB and / or outside forces targeting our sense of "normal" at this time of the year, imagine what they may be planning for 2019?

Any single event above might be enough to seriously disrupt the average family's day-to-day life in the affected locations.  Imagine the events becoming more widespread, or lasting longer, or all happening at once?

And regarding the troop withdrawals, how will they be employed once stateside again?  Many are asking whether martial law is on the table, and how soon?  Under what pretext?

*Withdraw some cash from the bank, in smaller bills in case stores can't make change

*Keep gas tanks topped off

*Keep storage food topped off

*Pay bills ahead of time and keep a positive balance cushion

*If automated or Internet bill payments are disrupted, find an old fashioned alternative such as a grocery store or mailbox center with bill payment service (assuming a grid outage is less widespread).

*Opt out of web-only bank statements, and insist upon hard copy (of bills too)

*Close any long distance revolving credit accounts that aren't absolutely necessary, as the data could become corrupt, or payments might not be posted.  Do business locally face-to-face when possible.

*Opt for lump-sum payments of retirement benefits or annuity principal, in lieu of monthly prorated payout

*If working for any type of government agency (federal, state or local), have a back-up plan in the private sector.

*If needing surgery or dental work, get it done as soon as possible.

Other ideas?

More Considerations:
Based upon film footage of laser-like beams in California, New York and Louisiana, some are claiming that recent events in those locations may be enactments of Project Blue Beam, in which an alien invasion is staged by PTB.

Others feel that the above events may constitute an attack by a foreign power from overseas.

Those in the Px community may lean toward an astronomical electrostatic interference theory.

Some feel that PTB are trying to harden us off in preparation for future events.

Dahboo77 is reporting that the wireless network in New York City went down this past weekend, resulting in a cascade of other outages, including traffic lights, the patient data reporting network, and NYPD license-plate readers.  The City was not able to override the system, which is under a $500 million contract with Northrop Grumman, the aerospace and defense technology corporation based in Virginia.  The outages are being blamed on a Y2K-type bug which was supposedly triggered on April 6 of this year...

Did The Government Just Test The Internet Kill Switch?  ???

"'I felt a great disturbance in the farce, as if millions of voices suddenly cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced."

At 3pmET, it appears that Google Cloud (affecting Gmail, YouTube, SnapChat, Instagram, and Facebook among others) mysteriously (and almost unprecedently) went offline.

A systemic network outage may have just occurred.. #ES_F

Google Compute Engine Incident #19003 We are experiencing a multi-region issue with Google Compute Engine

Incident began at 2019-06-02 12:25 (all times are US/Pacific).

Jun 02, 20 12:25 We are investigating an issue with Google Compute Engine. We will provide more information by Sunday, 2019-06-02 12:45 US/Pacific.

One Google insider explains (via YCombinator):

I work on Google Cloud (but disclaimer, I'm on vacation and so not much use to you!).

We're having what appears to be a serious networking outage. It's disrupting everything, including unfortunately the tooling we usually use to communicate across the company about outages.

There are backup plans, of course, but I wanted to at least come here to say: you're not crazy, nothing is lost (to those concerns downthread), but there is serious packet loss at the least. You'll have to wait for someone actually involved in the incident to say more.

So far, no one has blamed Russia...yet!

Very interesting Max!  Maybe this could explain the outage in the Etsy communication system this weekend (where I sometimes get rootstock and 2nd-hand clothing)...
