Homeland Security to compile database of journalists and ‘media influencers’

https://chicago.suntimes.com/politics/homeland-security-to-compile-database-of-journalists-and-media-influencers/

The Department of Homeland Security wants to track the comings and going of journalists, bloggers and other “media influencers” through a database.

The DHS’s “Media Monitoring” plan, which was first reported by FedBizOpps.gov, would give the contracting company “24/7 access to a password protected, media influencer database, including journalists, editors, correspondents, social media influencers, bloggers etc.” in order to “identify any and all media coverage related to the Department of Homeland Security or a particular event.”

The database would be designed to monitor the public activities of media members and influencers by “location, beat and influencers,” the document says.

The chosen contractor should be able to “present contact details and any other information that could be relevant including publications this influencer writes for, and an overview of the previous coverage published by the influencer.”

The request comes amid concerns regarding accuracy in media and the potential for U.S. elections and policy to be influenced via “fake news.”

The plan calls for the ability to track 290,000 news sources including online, print, broadcast and social media. Also, it would have the ability to track media coverage in over 100 languages, along with the “ability to create unlimited data tracking, statistical breakdown, and graphical analyses on ad-hoc basis.”

The slippery slope of elite rationalization on the road to totalitarianism is becoming steeper!  The Aware generally don't move in such circles though, either MSM or national politics.  Our sphere of influence is both smaller and larger than the national level, including our own locale, fellow-Aware via the WWW, and cosmic benevolence. :)

India's Big Brother: Fingerprint and Eye Scans Required for Food and Medicine  :(

https://www.blacklistednews.com/article/65057/indias-big-brother-fingerprint-and-eye-scans-required-for-food-and.html

India collects biometric data on 1.3 billion residents for use in a nationwide identity system called Aadhaar.

The New York Times notes Big Brother has Arrived in India.

Seeking to build an identification system of unprecedented scope, India is scanning the fingerprints, eyes and faces of its 1.3 billion residents and connecting the data to everything from welfare benefits to mobile phones.

Civil libertarians are horrified, viewing the program, called Aadhaar, as Orwell’s Big Brother brought to life. To the government, it’s more like “big brother,” a term of endearment used by many Indians to address a stranger when asking for help.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other champions of the program say that Aadhaar is India’s ticket to the future, a universal, easy-to-use ID that will reduce this country’s endemic corruption and help bring even the most illiterate into the digital age.

The poor must scan their fingerprints at the ration shop to get their government allocations of rice. Retirees must do the same to get their pensions. Middle-school students cannot enter the water department’s annual painting contest until they submit their identification.

The Modi government has also ordered Indians to link their IDs to their cellphone and bank accounts.

Although the system’s core fingerprint, iris and face database appears to have remained secure, at least 210 government websites have leaked other personal data — such as name, birth date, address, parents’ names, bank account number and Aadhaar number — for millions of Indians. Some of that data is still available with a simple Google search.

As Aadhaar has become mandatory for government benefits, parts of rural India have struggled with the internet connections necessary to make Aadhaar work. After a lifetime of manual labor, many Indians also have no readable prints, making authentication difficult. One recent study found that 20 percent of the households in Jharkand state had failed to get their food rations under Aadhaar-based verification — five times the failure rate of ration cards.

One of the biggest foreseeable problems with enforcement is that it would require knowing in absolute terms whether something is proven or not.  In actuality, there is very little in existence that is provable incontravertibly; to claim otherwise would shut the door to further learning.  Thus, much of what intelligent people discuss openly is based upon working hypotheses, without which we may never move forward to more concrete theses.  And even in just my lifetime many theses that had been taken for granted as being factual have had to be updated or discarded.

Provision will need to be made to allow for the editorial opinions of everyone who participates in a civil manner in social media, which should help to contravene the frivolity of the proposed regulations, in the same manner that news periodicals have always operated in a free society.

Depending upon the amount of time left before SHTF, I look forward to a First Amendment showdown, or several, on this one.

Might be a good rationale to have neither of those...

Well stated.  All governments will just keep nickel and diming our rights to death, till there's nothing left, or at least they'll die trying.

A good organization to keep abreast of litigation of such issues is the BORDC, Bill of Rights Defense Committee.  I haven't had time to read their material as much lately, am sorry to say, but they do important work.

    Maybe it's time to re-read 1984....

I think we are WAY beyond 1984 now ...

After half a dozen readings of that book, something that had receded into the background of the story begins to stand out: the Proles, or the non-Elite.  They mill around in the tale apparently off of the radar of PTB, who seem not to take an interest in them.  Possible moral: Don't seek to rise up the ladder too high?  Be innocuous?

One must take a stand sometimes though, and make a meaningful contribution.  Fortunately, Heaven seems to be increasing our awareness of PTB as fast as PTB is scrutinizing us...

September 25th is "National Panic Day" a day where Americans are encouraged to spy on each other  ??? ::)

https://www.blacklistednews.com/article/68484/september-25th-is-national-panic-day-a-day-where-americans-are-encouraged-to-spy-on-each.html

What is "National Panic Day"?

Officially, today is known as "National Awareness Day" not "National Panic Day." For the reasons stated below,  I am calling it "National Panic Day" which coincides with DHS reissuing their National Terrorism Bulletins this month.

DHS and law enforcement have created a national day that glorifies spying on your family, neighbors, coworkers, classmates and much more.

"Across the country, in our communities, we share everyday moments with our neighbors, family, coworkers, and friends.  We go to work or school, the grocery store, or the gas station.  It's easy to overlook these routine moments, but as you’re going about your day if you see something that doesn't seem quite right, say something.  By being alert and reporting suspicious activity to your local law enforcement you can protect your family, neighbors, and community."

Because DHS and law enforcement don't do enough spying, they have created a National Awareness Day that encourages domestic spying.

If you think "recognizing the signs of terrorism-related suspicious activity" ended with just an infographic you would be mistaken.

DHS has also created an entire page of suspicious young Americans doing things like bicycle jumping, eating from food trucks and sitting in a school hallway. Besides trying to appeal to X Games fans, what purpose do these videos serve?

I'll give you a hint, DHS and law enforcement want young people to be afraid of everything.

Besides being blatantly hyperbolic, these videos play on young people's fear of terror and encourages them to report "harmless activities." This is what happens when you indoctrinate an entire generation of millennial's who have grown up living in fear.

I imagine the local precinct will really appreciate being inundated with phone calls reporting suspicious bicycle jumping, public eating, and school hall sitting.

Our neighbor who pesters the local police about seriously needing a speed bump or stop sign near her house is regarded by them as being a crazy little old lady with too much time on her hands.  I can just imagine them rolling their eyes at complaints of jumping, eating and sitting!  ::)
