Also:  Active denial.  The possible causes are so unique that it would seem unrealistic to consider them.

Also:  Fear.  If any of the possible causes are real, then I/we are doomed.  The best reaction is to ignore them until the absolute last minute.

Yes, both active denial and fear could be a reason they don’t want to acknowledge what’s going on around them. However, it still irks me that they for whatever reason don’t see or, don’t WANT to see, what I deem to be so clear and in your face, that for me at least, it is impossible NOT to see it. I know that most are so involved in themselves, noses in their cell phones, distracted by whatever is the mainstream news of the day is but…
Oh well. I guess it’s like the old saying says. “You can lead a horse to water but, you can’t make it drink.”

So, just pity the poor dears, and let them learn to pay attention the hard way.  It's all part of their life lesson plan.   And, be available to provide info whenever the opportunity arises.

I agree, everyone has their life lessons they need to learn, in order to move on to the next level. I also know that you can help others but you can’t “carry them”. Doing that is a huge disservice towards whomever, as they can’t learn whatever lesson they need to learn/overcome if you are carrying them over/through it. Plus, sooner or later you’re not going to be able to have the strength to keep carrying them and you’ll be forced to drop them on their proverbial butts, resulting in that they won’t have a clue as to where/how to go from there or, even how they got where they are… But yes, provide info when it is needed and when you feel that they’ll be ready to listen.

The linked article says that it "sparked flashes."  I wonder if we're just seeing the reflection of the twin lightning strikes beside the car in the photo, or if anything was actually ignited?  Either way, what a scary event!

This is deeply concerning, though there could be many possible explanations, with likely not just one answer.

Am thinking there's probably not a lot that we can do as individuals, but maybe we can add an extra bird feeder this winter, as well as a little extra sheltered nesting location such as uncut brambles?  Also an unfrozen water source might be helpful.  Maybe begin supplemental feeding with the first hard frost of the season, and continuing possibly at least until a month past the Spring Equinox, to give things a chance to green-up?

Our first hard frost is due to come up around the second week of October, but the Farmer's Almanac is calling for us to have an earlier, colder and longer winter this year...

PX effects could be major cause.  Zetatalk has mentioned that.  Anyway, the pole crust shift will change climates and cause major die-off of most flora and fauna.  Some birds might migrate to new places compatible with their needs.
