Diminishing strategic mineral supplies
« on: June 11, 2019, 05:55:09 AM »
"Strategic Minerals" are naturally occurring elements that make all the difference between a primitive existence and a modern one.

Anyone even remotely interested in pursuing this topic might want to spend some time exploring each element on the Periodic Table one at a time, maybe spending an entire day or longer learning about them individually.  There is so much more to each one than the lab tricks that we were taught in high school and college.

PTB in part become PTB because the masses are not curious enough about this topic.   An awake Being may want to ask more questions about the natural resources that earth is providing us:

What is the color and texture of each element in its solid form?  What is its crystalline structure?  Why is it classified the way that it is?  What makes it unique in the modern world?

In what geographical region or regions can each one be found, and what are the political ramifications of cornering the market on each one, or of being left out in the cold when someone else corners the market?

This topic is posted here with the idea in mind that preppers may want to stockpile their own little supply of some of these materials, in order to aid their own transition during and after SHTF to a better existence.

Please post as you're able :)

Where the Rare Earth Elements are being mined, and by whom:

This article, published nearly a decade ago in 2010, stated that we had less than 20 years' worth of metals left (so now it would be 10 years left):

Yes, this issue of diminishing minerals is critical.  In addition to stockpiling, as RR suggests, it might be equally wise to ponder the complete unavailability of some of these minerals, and how life could/would go on without it/them.  Lots to ponder.

Such a thought leads me to suggest a list of some basic elements, compounds and mineral-based products to have on hand:

Two six-inch wires of pure .999 fine silver (for antimicrobial colloids)
Two six-inch wires of 24 karat gold (for CNS nutrition and protection)
Two six-inch copper wires (for nutritional supplement colloids)
As much sea salt as you have room for (not best for canning though)
As much iodized sodium chloride as you have room for (for canning, etc.)
As much iodized potassium chloride salt as you have room for (if kidneys are functioning)
As much sodium bicarbonate as you have room for
Saline (can be homemade) for eye wash and colloid electrolyte
Posassium iodide tablets (in case of nuclear accident or attack)
Lugol's concentrated iodine solution for well disinfection
Bio-iodine / Nascent iodine
Calcimag supplements with or without zinc
A multivitamin containing molybdenum (prevents sulfite-based allergic reactions/asthma from some foods)
Iron supplement for menstruating women, or cast iron pans
Iron or steel nails
Zinc alloy screws
Iron or steel tools
Borax for detox and bone strength
Sodium hypochlorite (bleach, disinfectant)
Propanol alcohol disinfectant
Acetic acid vinegar for cleaning, canning, acidifying crops
Activated charcoal/carbon for detox, purification
Neodymium/praseodymium magnets
Sodium carbonate (washing soda) for mold and mildew control
Calcium hydroxide for construction and egg preservation
Sodium silicate (Waterglass) for preserving eggs
Sodium or potassium hydroxide lye for soapmaking
Soda-lime glass (mason) jars
Stainless steel or tinplate canning jar lids and bands
Stainless steel sewing needles
Silica/silicon dioxide (sand)
Silicone batteries

Distilled water for colloids
Lithium long-life batteries (stored in fire-proof metal containers)
Bentonite clay for detox
Geobond (bentonite clay and diatomaceous earth for dewormer and desiccant)
Aluminum foil
Mica glass for woodstoves
Chimney fire extinguishers (potassium nitrate, strontium nitrate, sulfur, zinc powder)
Potassium hydrogen tartrate (cream of tartar for making fresh baking powder)

A very comprehensive list, RR, and thank you.  The only thing I could think of is instructions for making one's own vinegar from fruit of almost any kind, although apple cidar vinegar (ACV) is probably the most common.

Not only is it good for mixing with olive oil to make dressing for any salad or casserole, but potent vinegar is an excellent disinfectant, and has also been used as a weed killer, if applied successively on same plant.

If contemplating tough times ahead, we might want to learn or relearn some of the old ways of doing things.  For example a few years ago we attended one of those "re-enactment" weekends, where the players, vendors, and re-enactors wear period dress, and engage in the activities of that time period.

Once at Fort Duchartes (sp) in a re-enactment of the Frendh & Indian War/Seven Years' War, we saw many things including two diffferent laths being operated.  The smaller of the two was operated by a foot  treadle, where the guy's foot would push down on the treadle which then caused a branch up above to do something, etc., etc., and in the end he had a functional lathe.  The larger lathe was quite huge, and took two people to operate it--the man who was turning out spindles, table legs, etc., and the teenage boy who was using both hands to turn a very large wheel that was the power behind it all.  The teenager had the stamina, while the man making spindles, etc., had his skills.  It was totally fascinating and wonder how many people are prepared to engage in such activities anew.

This is a great channel for such re-enactments, with detailed information in the kitchen, garden, etc.:

Am needing to get a fresh set of recipe cards, and plan to jot down lots of notes on Colonial cooking, which was often done without any recipe at all!  :)
