Title: Healing Ingredients
Post by: Yowbarb on April 16, 2010, 11:08:39 AM
Hi Jim, I probably post too much so just wanted to do a brief list of some ingredients which I consider to be healing, and which I'm sure you know about. I have had personal experience with these.. more to come.

Note: The glass bottles and jars in the shelter would need to be packed securely with styrofoam, cardboard in between layers...
in case of earth movements. I plan to put stores like this in a cement box.
Just to kick it off: Here's a few of them

garlic ............................................fresh and also glass jars of minced garlic
olive oil......................................... glass jars, keep fairly long
ghi or ghee (clarified butter)..............you can get in jars or canned
cayenne.........................................packaged herbs, in a tin
Louisiana Hot Sauce (has cayenne).....glass bottles

I'm sure there will be lots of ideas on the uses for the above.
Here's just an outline:

Garlic kills off candida and pinworms helps get rid of other parasites.
Garlic (if a person can tolerate it) can be chomped down on and the juices trickle down the back of the throat. I have gotton
rid of many a potentially bad throat infection doing this. If a person has a sore red throat and there is no erythromycin, etc.
available and not even Chloraseptic - then the garlic will definitely be needed.

Cayenne kills on contact : Many bacteria and viruses, candida and even cancer cells.
The Louisiana Hot Sauce (or cayenne powder) is one shortcut way to take it. This goes down easier than other hot sauces which
are more like chili. I just dump it on my food. I can take a teaspoonful to cut short any allergic bumps in my throat, or the start of wheezing or to clear my chest etc.
Cayenne powder can stop many hemorrhages, put right on the wound.  (Curing with Cayenne)
Cayenne powder many other uses...

Ghi, ghee or clarified butter has less waste in it than regular butter; nourishes and helps the liver to heal.
Ghi is good for the skin and helps attract nutrients and protect the skin.

Olive oil is a monounsaturated fat. It helps the liver and the body in general to get rid of the "bad fat." It can be drizzled on
top of grains, veges, bread, actually any meal. That's what the ancient Israelites and the middle eastern peoples and the
Mediterranean peoples used to do - ladle the oil on top of their food.
Well that's all for now...

I have cured tooth-aches with garlic.  Cut a very thin slice, wrap it it a narrow strip of cloth, put that poultice between the base of the aching tooth and the inside of the cheek or lip, and leave it there overnight.

Yellow onions are in the same category as garlic, but less strong and less odoriferous.

Here is another one: MINT  (excerpt from http://health.learninginfo.org/benefits-mint.htm (http://health.learninginfo.org/benefits-mint.htm)):
"Mint is well known for its ability to sooth the digestive tract and reduce the severity and length of stomach aches. In addition, mint teas and other herbal preparations have shown great promise at easing the discomfort associated with irritable bowel syndrome, and even at slowing the growth of many of the most harmful bacteria and fungi. The well-documented antifungal properties of mint are thought to play a role in the treatment of asthma and many allergy conditions as well.  It is even thought that mint may have benefits as an anticancer food. Mint is known to contain a phytonutrient called perillyl alcohol, which has been shown in studies on animals to prevent the formation of colon, skin and lung cancer."

I have a booklet from herbalist  Shulze (www.herbdoc.com (http://www.herbdoc.com)) that says that the four most important herbs to have on hand are garlic, cayenne, mint, and yellow onions (if I remember correctly).

Also:  cloves are antibiotic.  Add some ground clove to the garlic poultice for tooth ache.

Some time ago I posted a note that cilantro, raw or cooked, chelates metals and carries them out of of the body in urine.

Egg shell membrane extract is an anti-aging agent.  You can buy it in capsules, or you can get it for free by putting your egg shells in your boiling water for coffee or tea.  Throw in a few clove buds also to add flavor.

(More to come from me also)

Jim
I forgot to mention my mom once took raw garlic sliced it thinly and put it on all my kid's warts.
Bandaged over that. They were up in the mountains for a visit. (Have no idea why they all had warts for a time -it was odd and I didn't have them...)

Anyway they came back and told me what Grandma had done and after she did that a couple of times no more warts!!

Also thanks for the tip about mint as an aid for asthma and anti cancer herb -didn't know that.
Well have a good weekend, all,

This is not a herb but Efoods a non GMO dehydrated food supplier has a buy 3 get one free sale going on until the 15Th of May it is healthy high quality food at a good price, and stores for 15 years and would be edible longer then that. A years worth of good food two cups three times a day for $2,249.85 I am not trying to push them well maybe a little, but if you are looking check it out. they do not pack a lot of garbage and sugars just to bulk it up. The only draw back for me it's vegetarian. I love meat being 0 negative blood type so I suggest a freeze dried meat supplier like mountain house to add meat here and there.

5-Cent Cure for Kidney Disease

Finally -- some great news for the 26 million people with chronic kidney disease! Because the problem is progressive and incurable, it can seem hopeless, but new research shows that a natural remedy that is safe, effective and costs just a few pennies a day can dramatically slow down kidney decline. What is it? Baking soda, believe it or not -- or, if you want to be technical, sodium bicarbonate.

Though it may well be the most medically important, this is hardly the first unconventional health-related use for this simple and inexpensive kitchen ingredient -- some swear by it as a remedy for acid indigestion, while others use baking soda to brush their teeth or in lieu of antiperspirant or to soothe rashes and skin eruptions. For people with chronic kidney disease (CKD), however, it is important to take this only under your doctor

Tomatoes. Research demonstrates that men who follow a diet high in the antioxidant compound lycopene have lower rates of prostate cancer -- and it is an important cancer fighter for women, too. Tomatoes are the most concentrated food source of lycopene, and cooked tomato products, such as tomato sauce and paste, are even better ways to get lycopene than raw tomatoes. Other good food sources of lycopene include apricots, guava, watermelon, papaya and pink grapefruit.

Nathan, they are finding that low levels of vitamin D are involved in a lot of immune disorders as well, like MS. One of the theories is that we are staying out of the sun more, and using sunscreen all the time so are unable to make our own D from the sun. The irony is when people get skin cancer they generally have low vitamin D levels. Also in the northern states when there is less sunshine we are more susceptible to low D levels. I personally take 4000 IU of D3 in the winter months, and then lower in the summer. I also take a tsp of fish oil as well.

Turmeric. Evidence suggests that this bright yellow antioxidant, which can be used on its own as a spice and is also an ingredient of Asian curry powder, helps suppress breast, colon and skin cancer. Curcumin, an active compound of turmeric, is anti-inflammatory and helps prevent new blood vessel growth (angiogenesis) associated with cancer tumors. Up to 3 grams per day of turmeric is considered safe.

Thanks for posting this. Will try to get some.  I hate to say this, but my daughter will have to watch out.
Her paternal grandmother passed away from breast cancer fairly young. In our family we don't seem to get this.
A lot of women nowadays seem to have the misfortune to get breast or ovarian cancer... will see if I can get tumeric.

PS for what it's worth, my mother and I and my two daughters who have kids - we all breast fed
our babies for a good long time. I read recently this affords a lot of protection from the breast cancer...
Just mentioning this because the idea of breast feedingt seems to be something that needs to be promoted. There's always some bozo doctoer who either discourages it or doesn't provide the necessary info.

I used to take flaxseed oil but dropped it out. Back when I was taking it I had less pain in my bones.
I am now on flax meal  a good fresh variety we got in a bulk jar we refrigerate it and put it into our
Vitamix fruit and veg drink. Thinking the flax oil would be good to take again. I recommend it.

Great info on the baking soda, I am one of those who swear by it for acid indigestion, and occasionally use it in place of toothpaste. I use the flax oil sometimes in smoothies and also make flax seed crackers, they are great snacks. Flax oil and fish oils are both good for joints. Good info Nathan.

Hawthorn: The Heart Healer
by Candace Hunter and Sue Sierralupe

hawthorn berriesHawthorn, Crataegus species, a.k.a. Mayhaw and Thornapple.

Hawthorn loves the heart. It lowers high blood pressure and raises low blood pressure. Hawthorn, like other tonics, focuses on stabilizing the existing system to achieve a healthy balance. Happily, this tree grows all over Eurasia and the Americas and has hundreds of species that are adapted to their native climate. This makes hawthorn easy to use and easy to grow.
Medicinal Properties and Actions of Hawthorn

Hawthorn is the heart tonic. It is full of complex flavonoids that work together to support the circulatory system. An an adaptogen, it is best to allow hawthorn several weeks to several months to adjust a damaged system. Hawthorn works well with other tonic herbs and strengthens their effect on the body.

Hawthorn also has bitter alkaloids especially in the leaves and flowers which stabilize the digestive system as well as the heart. The presence of catechins in hawthorn gives this plant an astringent effect that can be detected even in a weak cup of hawthorn tea.
Conditions Best Helped by Hawthorn

As a cardiovascular tonic, hawthorn is invaluable for a variety of conditions. It is added to a variety of herbal formulas to help the body process other herbs through the circulatory system. Patients with concerns about dangers to their heart and circulatory system can benefit from daily doses of hawthorn in a variety of forms.

Hawthorn has a positive inotropic effect on the heart similar to cardiac glycosides while reducing arrhythmia. This translates into a safe herb to use to prevent palpitations due to stress.

Hypertension is a common malady in modern life. High blood pressure or low blood pressure are dangerous symptoms that often lead to life threatening conditions. Hawthorn is a smart addition to a change in lifestyle that reduces such danger. Hawthorn has the ability as a tonic to lower high blood pressure or raise low blood pressure as the body requires.

Since hawthorn works so well on the circulatory system, it should be no surprise that it also tones capillaries in other parts of the body. Bloodshot eyes, glaucoma, varicose veins and hemorrhoids are all soothed by including hawthorn in the treatment plan.

Hawthorn is still under the researcher's microscope. It's currently being studied for its success in treating leukemia. The rutins in hawthorn have been shown to eliminate leukenmia cells in laboratory tests. It is also being studied for its effect on controlling lupus.

Linda this really sounds like a good addition to the survival zone garden/inside garden too.
I have imagined that the crossover of PX could be extremely fatiguing and so stressul to many people that they will not survive even if they are inside a safe place... the strengthening effects of Hawthorne - sounds like something to have around. Have used herbs successfully never got into tinctures -really need to learn how to do those...

1969Quartz0  I wish you all the luck in helping your father.
I wish regular medical practice and homeopathic, preventative etc. could all merge. If it works it works.
Not so hard for the medical establishment to use both; to figure out if there is a contraindication or issue
with mixing meds and herbs.
The docs arent't trained in these for the most part, so they don't even try. It's like throwing the baby out with the bathwater just because some herbs don't go with some medicines... Patients need to find out...
A suggestion: If any question call a pharmacist. Make sure he is a trained pharmacist. They know their stuff. Tou can ask about any possible interactions...or even look it up online first and zero in on a specific question..
Here is one page I found. Follow arrows, several entries. This is the second arrow, drug interactions etc.

http://www.medicinenet.com/hawthorn_crataegus_laevigata-oral/page2.htm (http://www.medicinenet.com/hawthorn_crataegus_laevigata-oral/page2.htm)  It is possible to sort through itand/or ask doc, pharmacist.
I know just a little about drug and herb interactions. For example I was on a bp med for awhile and I couldn't use grapefruit juice with it.  Also I am on colchicine and a couple antibiotics I don't take and don't drink much at all with it. Sometimes if I figure I will have a drink as in a social occasion I will go off the colchicine for a day or two. I figured that out but that is rare.

1969quart0 I can relate to that...my great uncle had a stroke in his early fifties - that was fairly common
in those days - he lived on a long time but never regained full use of one of his hands and he limped.
My parents were fortunate enough to be on some pretty good heart and bp drugs, my mother got a pacemaker - they were both in fairly good shape a long time. Mom made it to 90 my Dad was nearly 87.
The main culprit in our family was the blood fat - but some of them were able to counteract it with meds...
Some family members also take sloniacin, fish liver oil, etc. My parents took COQ10 their whole lives...
I take 100 mg a day rarely miss it...

BTW I very strongly recommend COQ10 - Coenzyme Q10. It is not hard to find - even big drug stores,
over the counter.. It has strongly regenerative properties, since this coenzyme is found in every living cell unless it is a very damaged diseased cell. COQ10 turns the clock back. It helps with the heart, lungs, teeth and gums... anti aging.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coenzyme_Q10#Heart_failure (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coenzyme_Q10#Heart_failure)

Excerpts and in my own words:
Coenzyme Q10 ............................abbreviated at times to CoQ10 (pronounced "ko-cue-ten"), CoQ, Q10, or Q) .....
This oil-soluble substance is present in most [cells with nuclei] It is part of the process which generates energy (life itself) in the cells... those organs with the highest energy requirements

Barb I see you take colchicine , my son takes that for gout. He started having gout attacks in his teens. We have discovered through research that high frutose corn syrup is a big culprit in aggravating and causings attacks of gout. http://healthinmotion.wordpress.com/2008/03/03/sweet-drinks-blamed-for-surge-in-gout/ (http://healthinmotion.wordpress.com/2008/03/03/sweet-drinks-blamed-for-surge-in-gout/) Gout is also genetic.
He was a big soda drinker before, and now avoids as much high frutose corn syrup as he can, the attacks have subsided a great deal, but he takes colchicine when he feels one coming on and it stops the attacks.
The sad thing about high frutose corn syrup is it is put in so many foods, so you have to avoid almost all processed foods to avoid the culprit. It is a very destructive additive.

Nathan, sorry to hear about your father, hope he does well. I know it's hard to get family to accept suggestions, especially parents. And the older generation tends to still put total faith in their Dr. I like Barb wish they would bring together natural and mainstream medicine.

My daughter tuned me in to the hawthorn for heart health because her boyfriend is in is early 40"s and concerned about his heart. His father and uncle both died in their early 50's from heart attacks, so being a herbalist she is working to find ways to help him.

Linda, I hope your son continues to do fairly well by watching his diet and taking colchicine only with gout flareups...
I don't know how to take it for that. For FMF if people do better with colchicine, and can tolerate it well, they stay on it for life.
True,  things in the diet can flare up gout...
To my knowledge: Colchicine only has two uses - gout and FMF. Will post more about colchicine in another Topic...

Totally agree it is important to be aware of diet and the food triggers. Oh, do you feel any refined carb could flare up the gout?
I think regular white sugar is better than the high fructuse corn syrup...
Probably the GM flours etc make things worse too...
Thanks for the good ideas,

Barb, I had not heard of FMF before so looked it up, not a pleasant thing to have to deal with. They find that losing weight and avoiding most processed foods plus cutting down on beef products helps with the gout problems. But in gout a person just gets build up of uric acid in their joints. My son's always starts in his big toes and proceeds to his ankles, he gets so bad he cannot walk on his feet, they manage to swell up to twice their normal size.

Most heath issues respond to a clean diet (no processed foods, as they say "if mother nature didn't make it, don't eat it".  :) If only we could all stick to that!

Thanks Nathan and Jim, He has tried the cherry juice, didn't seem to stop the attacks. Something else that works (I had forgot about it) he takes alfalfa capsules. When he is in acute phase he will take up to 10 a day, it cleans out the uric acid in his system. He had multiple attacks in a row (5 of them within a month) that is when he went on the colchicine. He continues to take a couple alfalfa tabs a day for maintenance, and only takes the colchicine if he feels an attack coming on. Fortunately he has been symptom free for about 8 months.

Maybe a little distilled water cure once in awhile will help. It can be overdone, but - I have had success with it in the past and helped my mother with it a couple of times.
I was told to do this many years ago when a holistic lab said my uric acid and urea in blood had gone sky high to the point I could have a heart attack.  I wasn't particularly overweirght but I had been working hard and not drinking much water and thought canned tuna was better than pork bologna about my only choices at the time... wasn't rolling in the dough at any rate it was a temp situation (which I later attribute to FMF, more on it later.) The holistic doc said take gallons of the distilled. Just a quarter cup every half hour pretty much the whole day. I have noticed, and observed in others than if it keeps up too long in the day it can flush out so much (whatever) that the person gets a little hyper or jittery. I think, from about early AM through dinner time and that's it. Try a couple days.
It has to be fresh enough distilled a supermarket probably good enough. If it is in a little corner store it might have been there too long.

The holistic gal said I was overdoing it, had added lemon to it. She said add a little apple juice to the distilled, part of the time...Well, I'd say try it in moderation. It could help.  Book, Choose Life Or Death, about cleaning urea out of the blood and also about checking the ph of the blood and taking calcium tablets to compensate and get the ph better. - Yowbarb

Noproblemo, sorry to hear about the extra seizures of your little buddy. That's hard to deal with...
If you could pick up some distilled and he does the small doses this could help.
Good luck,

I just thought of something.  Does solar activity bring on Seizures?  Or earth changes?  Just a thought.  Would the electro magnetic activity effect both humans and animals as we closer to the possible passage.

Just a few hmm..
Well it sure seems to in my Nova, that and full moons, also in my epi support groups seizure activity is up in many of our pups.

In our latest book Apartment Gardening Mediterranean Style we included in the chapter about growing herbs on apartment terraces and balconies a list of the ten which we would grow for beneficial infusions as a substitute for tea or coffee if we down-sized from our villa.
Here’s our list:
1. Mint – a useful digestive and hangover relief.
2. Lemon verbena – a refreshing and calming drink especially cooled in the summer.
3. Rosemary – gives an energy and memory boost especially when out walking the local mountains and typing articles on the computer.
4. Sage – an antiseptic for rinsing teeth and gums.
5. Parsley – a useful relief for cystitis, and a diuretic.
6. Rue – for speedy recovery from sprains and strains from mountain walking, tennis and the winter cut-back in the garden.
7. Garlic – we eat chopped garlic daily in salads and cooked dishes for its incredible health benefits.  An infusion is used as a natural insect deterrent on terrace plants – you don’t smell it but many insects do.
8. Thyme – a useful decongestant and antiseptic.
9. Basil – mixed with slices of lemon, grated or sliced ginger and black pepper, it helps shake off early symptoms of colds.
10. Stevia – originally a South American plant available from www.dolcarevolucio.cat in Cataluña – a natural sweetener for infusions and cooked dishes, and used by friends who have diabetes.

A pot of each on a terrace or outside the kitchen door would fit into a single square metre!   We would love to hear of readers’ favourites.

Linda
Linda just a couple more things on it..
Colchicine as it is commonly used in the modern world is a synthetic version of an ancient herbal remedy.
Extract of the Crocus. It can be purchased in homeopathic form.

This is too long so you don't need to read all of it if you do not want to. Could be edited beter but need to post it and move on. At the end I posted a reference site.

I totally agree a clean diet really makes a difference. Certain foods I went off of decades ago/a couple lapses but I am mindful...

At one point I was fanatically careful of what I ate, was vegetarian, vegan most of the time - did yoga and mild aerobics had raw juice and organic foods and got down to 120 pounds and still I had a whole host of symptoms and problems and I had no clue. I mean I knew a fair amount and I knew I had been born with multiple allergies which turned into asthma and I knew what troublesome symptoms I had all over my body. They came and went. Later on I found out these are "FMF Flares."  These commonly start with an unexplained pain in the chest and/or lower abdomen on one side. Thre can be pain in the intestines, bones, joints, respiratory etc. Often te head is hot. If there is a  condition it gets worse and flares up. If the person survives it it is over in a few days. FMF people and/or Melungeon tend to have a subnormal body temp. So when they present at the doc's office with one two degrees of fever they are already feeling that, it's not nothing.

I am not closed - minded I do realize that low blood sugar, parasites, toxicity, candida - and all can cause many of these things. I also know we are not our bodies but bodies need treatments... and help.

Having already journeyed through these answers - these things were only a part of it. I simply took a good look and found THE root cause, from a physical standpoint. Now I know how to handle many things but the fact remains I need the colchicine and so does anyone with  FMF. No one has to agree with me... this is not very commonly known in the US.

With me I didn't really get anywhere no matter what I ate or didn't eat. Until I figured out what was wrong - that  FMF was likely the root cause - and started using the colchicine...

My quest started with genealogy searches and I started doing Melungeon research. (Early Americans.) Also I wondered why my maternal grandmother perished before age thirty from "arthritis." Both my grandmother and my mother had RA pretty bad. Never had a blood test for it. From there I stumbled upon the data on FMF as part of the Melungeons Health Network of Nancy Sparks Morrison.

Well it sounds like "poor me," - but I know what I know and I would not want any child to go through all that (what I went through) with no real help.

Also I do love life and currently not really suffering much for 66 and the colchicine has helped me for years. I share what I have learned.
..... shortened post......................................
I had no clue until I was well past 55. Main source of info has been http://www.melungeonhealth.org/ and the FMF support group at Yahoo and also
Cyber Guy pathologist.

Not trying to push a drug. Colchicine really can save lives. It is very commonly used in Israel.
It happens to be a very ancient genetic disease and only one thing to really alleviate it and prevent the end result. I mean from a purely medical standpoint. It is not found in all populations.

The reason it is an undiagnosed and baffling condition in America, is a person can think they are all Scotch Irish but actually have some Sephardic Jewish or Turk from early days of  America or from ancestors being Crypto-Jews.  FMF supposedly traces to the ancient Moors and went to the Sephardic people when they were booted out of Egypt. Mediterranean countries. There are archaeological signs of it being strongly present in the families of the Pharoah.

The story goes:  The Ashkenazi who went a different route and were not attacked by the Moors, are pretty much free of it. Some very early Americans and also Jews who lost their heritage and no longer knew they were Jews, these are the ones who in the current day think they are sort of a Black Irish or Black Dutch.
Since the docs are only part smart - they assume if the person does not tell him they are a sephardic Jew, or Armenian or Middle Easten - and their name is "Jones" - he doesnt investigate the possibility of  FMF, or try colchicine. (Although colchicine is used for gout.)
BTW not many people nowadays have their original Hebrew or Sephardic, Mediterranean name. Jona, Jonas etc has long since become Jones. Just a made up example.

It is an herbal based med found to be used very commonly in Medieval Europe then pretty much forgotton about until recently.
The Pharoahs used pure extract of the crocus flower. (Also the herb saffron.)
The current version is synthetic but I find it to be very potent. It either really helps a person with a multitude of symptoms - or it does not.  Some people cannot even tolerate it.
Currently I am on a very dilute dose and easing back into it...
If there is too much going on, and I don't keep a list of stuff to do I forget...

Not every kid gets it. It is a recessive disease. If that kid has a variety of miserable ailments including gout and any form of what could be arthritis  (or allergies, pleurisy or respiratory stuff) that kid could not only have the recessive gene for FMF he is sufferinging with it. There are certin known "markers" of the disease which run in families, manifesting in various ways. In other words a person does not have to have had all the diseases mentioned. For example my mother and grandmother had RA. One bro had pleurisy once.  Dad had pretty continuel digestive problems.... etc.

Undiagnosed children with no help for this comprise a certain small percentage of unexplaned deaths, these occur in babyhood, young years 7-10 and also in young adult years and around 50. FMF practically always shows up as acute phases of something before age ten. [shortening this down]

The only reason I bring it up is, curently the main way to diagnose FMF is to do a trial run of the colchicine. If all the symptoms start to do back and ther is relief from pain and swelling etc. then the person probably does have FMF. In the aftertime, there will be a certain percentage of people who will have it. About the only substance that will helpthem get through their lives is the colchicine.
Not sayng all the nutrition does not help it does, also if anyone will grow plants, they need to do some research.  Potent and can be toxic. A person would have to know how to grow it compound it . Easier to buy a stash of the herb in synthetic form. I used to get it from Australia by mail.

If the science on this planet is not destroyed in the coming times, and honest research continues, the time will come when a whole lot of troublesome diseases will be wiped from the human race. Gene therapy.
Meanwhile I strongly feel that colchicine should be stashed in order to help people in the Aftertimes. If it helps a person a lot then they need it.

Garlic and olive oil are superb ingredients for any meal! I also like to include broccoli, cauliflower and carrots. Cant get enough veggies these days.

This is an interesting chemical. I feel it may help form new nerve and blood vessels. I base this only on it's dramatic effect on plants. Please use with care so much good could be offset by careless use{{:>)

A neighbor recommended this to my wife, and it stopped pain in her legs.

From http://www.arnica.com.au/arnica.php (http://www.arnica.com.au/arnica.php)
[start quote]
Known for its mind and body healing properties, the herb Arnica has been harvested for centuries from the mountain pastures and lowland marshes of Europe and North America. The perennial plant with orange-yellow, daisy-like flowers has a pleasant spicy smell and is renowned for its curative and restorative powers. The flowers and rootstocks are dried, the most valuable part being the flowers. This amazing herb, sometimes brewed as a tea, but often made into a lotion and infused with oil or cream for injuries such as falls, is a known homeopathic cure for stress, impotence, sleeping problems, baldness and emotional shock and trauma caused by past incidents.

Arnica once almost completely disappeared because of over harvesting but is now grown and gathered sustainably to ensure that the herb remains in use for future generations. Arnica Montana is now available for general use.

It is estimated that 70 per cent of our immune response is emotional; to be unhappy or depressed lowers our resilience to illnesses and we become more susceptible. Arnica Montana, taken daily when necessary, may help to prevent this occurring. A sudden death of a family member or friend, a prolonged illness, business worries, the stress of working and running a home, working long hours, struggling to pay the bills or worrying about other's problems are things many people have experienced.

Homeopathy's founder, Samuel Hahnemann discovered in his experiments with the herb Arnica over 200 years ago that it could relieve emotional and mental problems caused by past trauma. Hahnemann discovered that by taking Arnica, other remedies would work better because the body was in a balanced state, and that further healing could take place. It is as a homeopathic remedy used internally where it has far greater healing powers.

Hahnemann, pioneering a system still used by homeopaths today, experimented with Arnica on hundreds of subjects and discovered its powers were vast, particularly in the realm of emotional trauma. He asked his human subjects - unaware of what they were taking - to note the effects of Arnica over a long period of time. He found it helped heal everything from baldness and impotence to incontinence, cramps, bruises, general soreness, forgetfulness, travel sickness, sleeping problems, gout, rheumatism and emotional problems.

Arnica was made into a homeopathic remedy in the 18th and 19th centuries following Hahnemann's research. Today, Arnica Montana is the first remedy used by homeopaths to heal people affected by shock, trauma or injury to the body, and is as appropriate for a mental, emotional or spiritual shock as much as physical injuries.

Anti cancer, healing benefits of lemon. - Yowbarb

================================
Institute of Health Sciences, 819 N. L.L.C. Charles Street Baltimore , MD 1201.
This is the latest in medicine, effective for cancer!
Read carefully & you be the judge.
Lemon (Citrus) is a miraculous product to kill cancer cells. It is 10,000 times stronger than chemotherapy.
Why do we not know about that? Because there are laboratories interested in making a synthetic version that will bring them huge profits. You can now help a friend in need by letting him/her know that lemon juice is beneficial in preventing the disease. Its taste is pleasant and it does not produce the horrific effects of chemotherapy. How many people will die while this closely guarded secret is kept, so as not to jeopardize the beneficial multimillionaires large corporations? As you know, the lemon tree is known for its varieties of lemons and limes. You can eat the fruit in different ways: you can eat the pulp, juice press, prepare drinks, sorbets, pastries, etc... It is credited with many virtues, but the most interesting is the effect it produces on cysts and tumors. This plant is a proven remedy against cancers of all types. Some say it is very useful in all variants of cancer. It is considered also as an anti microbial spectrum against bacterial infections and fungi, effective against internal parasites and worms, it regulates blood pressure which is too high and an antidepressant, combats stress and nervous disorders.
The source of this information is fascinating: it comes from one of the largest drug manufacturers in the world, says that after more than 20 laboratory tests since 1970, the extracts revealed that: It destroys the malignant cells in 12 cancers, including colon, breast, prostate, lung and pancreas ... The compounds of this tree showed 10,000 times better than the product Adriamycin, a drug normally used chemotherapeutic in the world, slowing the growth of cancer cells. And what is even more astonishing: this type of therapy with lemon extract only destroys malignant cancer cells and it does not affect healthy cells.

We have a whole Topic on ginger (somewhere) but oh well!
Here is something that might prove useful, posted elsewhere on the board too,
Also, posted in another section of the Town Hall, something I had shared on kimchi this is a better place for it.

Once I was standing in a line at a market in Hollywood and was sort of sniffling. I had a little bag of ginger one of the ingredients we used to put in with our five grains or our fresh juice. A little oriental man behind me noticed the ginger, and said to me, "You put the ginger in a pan with water and sugar and boil it... it gets rid of the sickness." At first I doubted the sugar part but sure enough - with the sugar it was more powerful!!
Another remedy I had forgotton about. - Yowbarb

"Linda I discovered Kimchi up in Wasington state back in the early 1980s. I think there was some up there at the time because of the oriental population settling and working in agriculture there. Lots of Vietnamese and Chinese were there. I saw jars of Kimchi - Kimchee -  in with the produce.
I discovered that when it got cold and damp out, and if I showed some sign of getting a cold, if I had a little bit of the kim chi there would be no cold. It was just stopped before it started!! Between the ginger and the garlic and some form of chili and the fermentation, wow! My body likes that fermented food such as kimchi and miso and yogurt.
Thanks for the reminder on it." - Yowbarb

Good info Barb, love Kimchi. Lately I have been drinking ginger kombucha tea, pretty darn good. I am making a batch with the combo of Green tea and Ginger tea. With the ginger in it, it should be double good for you.

This is something we can make without cooking, you just need sugar, tea and a kombucha mushroom. It provides beneficial bacteria for your health, and tastes great!

Eating those fermented foods can make all the difference in your health, I will have to try the ginger with sugar and water, nice and simple but effective.

Thanks Barb

Linda funny you should mention kombucha. I had given away a couple of them and was moving and then didn't start a new culture. I have been thinking of going back to it.
Things like kombucha and other home grown mushrooms, sprouts, yogurt cultures, these will be real life savers in the future.
I haven't bought the ginger for awhile, need to do that too...

How to make a kombucha "mushroom"
Posted by Mark Frauenfelder, August 3, 2007 1:08 PM | permalink
Here's an article from CRAFT Vol.2, written by Arwen O'Reilly -- How to make your own kombucha tea.

Kombucha is on its way to being the new "it" drink. This fermented tea is so popular that several brands are available at upscale grocery stores, and its Wikipedia entry has tripled in length since I first checked. I've heard the tea's culture -- which looks like a rubbery pancake -- called a "mother," "mushroom," "starter," and most accurately, a "scoby" ('symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeasts').

Whatever it is, kombucha is entering a renaissance after millennia of use in China and centuries in Eastern Europe, from whence all good fermented things come. Its loyal following claims health benefits of all ilk, citing vitamins, minerals, enzymes, and probiotic microorganisms present in the tea. I just like it because it tastes good (like a sweet-sour sparkling apple cider).

Kombucha Madness
By Arwen O'Reilly

CRAFT: 02 - Kombucha Tea

"...kombucha is entering a renaissance after millennia of use in China and centuries in Eastern Europe, from whence all good fermented things come. Its loyal following claims health benefits of all ilk, citing vitamins, minerals, enzymes, and probiotic microorganisms present in the tea. I just like it because it tastes good like a sweet-sour sparkling apple cider."

Materials
» Wide-mouthed glass jar » Kombucha culture » Black or green tea bags (5 to 7) » Water (3 quarts to 1 gallon) » Sugar (1 cup, brown or white) » Clean paper napkin or tea towel » Rubber band or string » Funnel » Old soda bottles, cleaned

1. Get kombucha starter culture.
You can buy kombucha culture on the web, but it's probably easier to get it from a friend or someone in your neighborhood (try craigslist.org or bulletin boards at your local health food store). I even saw some for sale at a flea market in Russia (see above). The starter replicates itself in each batch, so one is enough for your lifetime. Soon you'll have a culture for everyone you know!

2. Make regular tea and sweeten.
Make 3 quarts to 1 gallon of tea (if you have loose tea you can make a tea bag out of a piece of an old sheet and some string) and let cool to room temperature. Remove tea bags and add sugar. Don't worry if it seems too sweet -- the culture feeds on sugar and caffeine, so the final drink will not be as sweet as the original.

3. Add kombucha culture.
If your culture came with some liquid, add the starter liquid to the tea. Pour the sweet tea into your jar and add the culture. If it floats on top, it will grow another layer, which can be peeled off and used for another batch when the kombucha is ready. If it settles to the bottom, that's fine -- a new culture will form on top of the tea. The starter will grow to the diameter of your jar, so make sure the mouth is wide enough to remove it easily when you are done.

4. Ferment and bottle.
Cover your jar with a clean towel and seal around the rim with a rubber band. Store in a spot out of direct sunlight for 7-14 days. The longer you leave your tea, the more sour it will become. Start tasting it after 5 or 6 days, and decant into clean plastic or glass soda bottles when you like the taste.

5. Give it some fizz.
To give it some bubble, tightly cap bottles and store in a warm place for another day or so until the plastic bottle hardens from pressure. Be aware that as the kombucha continues to ferment, the pressure inside the bottle is growing and can cause it to explode if left too long (this is more of a concern with glass bottles). If you're worried, leave the cap a little loose, but this will prevent the tea from fizzing properly.

6. Drink and make more.
Always set aside 10% of the liquid to help start future batches. Then you can start all over again! If you want a steady flow of "the tea of immortality," then it probably makes sense to stagger your batches. Most experts warn against drinking too much of the stuff; it is a detoxifier, so you don't want to stress out your body.

NOTE: As with all foods, be careful when preparing and storing kombucha. While I personally have never heard of anyone getting sick, it is theoretically possible, so make sure everything is clean while preparing; if you see mold, toss the entire batch, including the starter, just to be on the safe side (it happened to me once, and only once, probably due to lack of air circulation or a bad starter). But don't let this warning scare you: even my mom drinks my kombucha, and Google's chef whips up huge batches to serve in its cafeterias.

Here are some excerpts from an article posted in its entirety in Michael Marcus' Board,
Survivalist Heal Thyself.
The healing ingredients listed in this article are:
[ Red Pine Needle Oil from a different article ]

.....................................................................
Artichokes
Baked beans, preferably vegetarian baked
Barley, cooked
Beets
Black beans
Broccoli
Carrots
Flaxseed
Garlic, raw
Kefir
Lentils
Lima beans
Oatmeal, steel cut or old - fashioned
Papaya
Peas
Pomegranates
Popcorn, preferably air -popped
Pumpkin
Red Pine Needle Oil [ from a different article ]
Rice, cooked
Split peas
Sweet potatoes
Turnip greens
Winter squash
Yogurt
.....................

Yogurt and Kefir
Yogurt and kefir contain probiotics, healthy bacteria that promote digestive function and help prevent infections caused by harmful bacteria. According to a research review published in "Current Issues in Molecular Biology" in 2008, probiotics help protect your digestive tract from harmful bacteria and adverse effects of parasites. Though additional research is needed, according to the report, incorporating probiotics into your diet regularly may promote healing from parasites. For maximum probiotic benefits, consume kefir and/or low-fat yogurt with live active cultures, or that list lactobacillus acidophilus, lactobacilus plantarum, saccharomyces boulardii or bifidobacteria, on food packaging, regularly.

Whole Grains Whole grains are rich sources of nutrients, such as iron, selenium and B-vitamins, and fiber. The University of Maryland Medical Center suggests eating more fiber as a dietary tool for eliminating parasitic worms. For best results, replace refined carbohydrate sources, such as enriched breads, pasta, cereals and snack foods, with whole grain equivalents. Whole grains foods particularly rich in fiber include steel cut and old fashioned oatmeal, cooked barley, 100 percent whole grain breads and cold cereals, air-popped popcorn, whole wheat spaghetti, brown rice and wild rice. When purchasing whole grain foods, check food packaging to ensure that whole grains are listed as main ingredients.

Legumes
Legumes are podded vegetables that provide rich amounts of fiber, nutrients, such as iron and calcium, and protein. MayoClinic.com lists legumes, including split peas, lentils, black beans, lima beans and vegetarian baked beans, as some of the top available fiber-rich foods. Legumes also provide nutritious alternatives to high-fat protein sources, such as red and processed meat, which can make inflammation, pain and diarrhea worse.

Vegetables and Seeds
Vegetables provide rich amounts of antioxidants, which help your body heal and protect itself from infections and disease. Certain varieties, including raw garlic, pomegranates, carrots and beets, have been used traditionally to eliminate parasites, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. Pumpkin and papaya seeds may provide similar benefits. Vegetables particularly rich in fiber and antioxidants include artichokes, peas, broccoli, turnip greens, sweet potatoes and winter squash. Flaxseed is rich in fiber and omega-3 fatty acids, which may help reduce inflammation.

Miscellaneous ideas on detoxifying the body...
For starters I just want to post a few things I have heard about and personally tried. This is not something I could prove. Many of these foods or herbs I had used when I was in bad shape (for whatever undiagnosed reason, at that time.) I definitely noticed the cause and effect of these things and how fast they helped.

•   Apple pectin (you find it in the canning section of the grocery store)
•   Coenzyme C10 under the tongue taken with a small amount orange juice
•   Cooked carrots with sea salt
•   Golden seal tea - A little bit under the tongue...
•   Vitamin C fizzy drink

Thanks so much Barb!  I'm going to try a few of those myself!

Those all have helped me in the past when I was having some kind of problem...feeling really toxic and weak... Just a little dab of those things pulled me out of whatever it was.
I heard about the apple pectin from my Mother who was an avid reader of Prevention health magazine.
Plain old apple pectin, which comes in paper packages, what you use for canning. She told me she had read it gets into the system and absorbs a lot of toxins... It tastes good too.  :) I would take a spoonful of it...

I didn't give apple cider vinegar a chance..I think I will start using it again.
What did your grandmother say about it?    :)

Barb, I was pretty young when I can remember the conversation between my Mom and Grandmom about it, they offered me some, and I can remember smelling it and saying, "No Way!"  So, unfortunately, I'm not really sure why, but I know my Mom had a lot of digestive, stomach problems, menapausal issues as well, so I'm thinking that is why she had told my Mom to use it.  She would just take about a tablespoonful right down every morning.  She was extremely healthy and lived to be 97!

Wow!  What a list of ailments I found that apple cider vinegar is supposed to be helpful for!  It is such a lengthy list, I had to split it into two separate posts!  Amazing!

Use The Natural Healing Benefits
of Apple Cider Vinegar

Many of the home remedies for common ailments listed below, call for a tonic of apple cider vinegar (ACV) made by mixing 2 or 3 teaspoons of ACV in an 8 ounce glass of water and drinking this before or during each meal.

By taking this nutritious tonic you will, at the very least, be helping to reduce the nutrient deficiencies that result from a typical western diet containing many processed, refined foods.

Natural healing Apple cider vinegar kills germs and nourishes the body at the same time, so have a look at some of the many different ways people have been benefiting from the external and internal application of this folk medicine.

Note: If you take ACV between meals or before going to bed, always rinse your mouth to avoid any prolonged vinegar contact with the enamel on your teeth.
Any acid food or drink however, such as citrus fruit, soda pop, and apple cider vinegar can erode tooth enamel if it is allowed to stay in contact with the teeth for long periods of time.

ACNE BLEMISHES
Apply a solution of apple cider vinegar and water (2 tablespoons to 1 eight ounce glass of water) with a cotton ball several times a day. This will help reduce infection and dry out inflammation.
Another natural healing home remedy calls for the daily application of apple cider vinegar which has been infused with horseradish. Prepare the solution by adding two cups of ACV to one pound of grated horseradish. Let it sit for two weeks, then strain. For more information on the types of things that contribute to chronic acne and what simple steps to take to stop them, (using all natural products) check out Mike Walden's e-book called "Acne No More".

 AGE SPOTS
Apply daily, to these darkened areas of the skin, a solution containing 2 teaspoons of apple cider vinegar and 1 teaspoon of Onion Juice. According to this home remedy, the spots should begin to fade within 2 weeks.

ARTHRITIS HELP
Message the sore joints with a liniment made up of 2 egg whites, ½ cup (125 ml) apple cider vinegar, and ¼ cup (60 ml) olive oil. Also, simply taking the apple cider vinegar tonic (2 or 3 teaspoons to 8 ounces of water) before each meal has been an effective natural healing home remedy for many people.
ASTHMA
Some people have found relief from mild asthma by taking the apple cider vinegar tonic along with applying a vinegar-soaked compress to the inside of the wrists.

ATHLETE'S FOOT
Athlete's foot is a fungal infection which is quite difficult to get rid of. One of the best home remedies involves soaking the feet twice a day in a 50/50 mixture of apple cider vinegar and water. Or, you can apply pure apple cider vinegar to the affected areas several times a day and before bedtime.

BLEEDING NOSE
Soak a cotton ball in pure apple cider vinegar, have the person lay his head back and then place it in the bleeding nostril. This home remedy will help stop the bleeding quicker.

BLOOD PRESSURE
Take 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar and 1 tablespoon of honey in a glass of water twice a day to help lower blood pressure. The high potassium values in both natural healing substances helps to balance out sodium levels in the body, which aids in maintaining blood pressure within healthy limits. Apple cider vinegar and honey also contain magnesium, a mineral that works to relax blood vessel walls and thus lower high blood pressure. To maximize the benefit of this and other home remedies, take the holistic approach, and couple this with dietary modifications such as a reduced fat and salt intake, increased fiber intake, moderate coffee and alcohol, no smoking, and daily exercise.

BODY ODOR
Use apple cider vinegar as a natural body deodorant and eliminate the bacteria causing offensive body odor. For example, check out these two related home remedies:
Underarms can be kept free of odor causing bacteria by wiping them once a day with undiluted apple cider vinegar whereas foot odor can be greatly minimized by soaking the feet two or three times weekly in a pan of warm water mixed with 1/3 cup (75 ml) of ACV.

BONE HEALTH
Due to its mineral content, Apple cider vinegar helps to sustain bone mass and fight against osteoporosis. The important minerals involved include manganese, magnesium, phosphorus, calcium, and silicon.
Take the general apple cider vinegar tonic (2 or 3 teaspoons to 8 ounces of water) to boost the body's supply of these minerals. Click here to find more about the mineral content of apple cider vinegar.

BRUISES
Dissolve 1 teaspoon of salt in ½ cup (125 ml) of warm apple cider vinegar and apply it to the bruise as a compress.

BURNS
Apply pure apple cider vinegar to the burn, whether it's from the sun or a hot surface, to reduce the pain, to disinfect, and to supply nutrient required for healing.

To get the maximum benefit of this home treatment, treat the burn immediately, until pain is relieved.

Generally the results occur faster and more efficiently than when flushing the burn under cold water, often eliminating almost all swelling and redness.

Note also that the skin does not burn on contact with vinegar (unless this is an open wound, which is not the common case of a burn), you only feel a slight tingling sensation without pain.

CANCER PREVENTION
Apples and apple cider vinegar contain numerous substances that protect against many types of cancer. They contain beta-carotene, a powerful antioxidant, and phytochemicals such as flavonoids and polyphenols that are also protective against cancer formation.
Plus they both contain pectin, a soluble fiber , which binds certain cancer causing compounds in the colon and speeds up their elimination from the body.
So eat an apple a day and take the general apple cider vinegar tonic home remedy (2 or 3 teaspoons to 8 ounces of water) to maximize these benefits.

CHOLESTEROL REDUCTION
It is thought that the water soluble fiber pectin, found in apple cider vinegar, absorbs fats and cholesterol and eliminates them from the body. And at the same time, the amino acids present in apple cider vinegar neutralize some of the harmful oxidized LDL cholesterol.

Recently, researchers from Mizkan, a japanese food manufacturer, reported that regular vinegar intake of 3 teaspoons (15 ml) or more per day can significantly lower the level of cholesterol in a persons blood. They found that acetic acid, the major ingredient in vinegar, is responsible for this effect.
The results were presented at the 59th Annual Meeting for the Japanese Society of Nutrition and Food Science in May 2005.

Maximize this benefit by taking the apple cider vinegar tonic home remedy (2 or 3 teaspoons to 8 ounces of water) and increasing the amount of fiber rich food in your diet (more fruits and vegetables) while reducing the amount of saturated and unsaturated fat.

COLDS
At the first sign of a cold, take 1 teaspoon of apple cider vinegar in half a cup of water several times a day. The body becomes more alkaline during a cold and the vinegar will help to rebalance the body's acid level. If you have a chest cold, a long-standing home remedy calls for soaking a piece of brown paper in vinegar then sprinkling one side of it with black pepper. Place the peppered side of the paper on the chest, cover with a towel, and relax for 20 minutes.

CONSTIPATION
A low fiber diet and the reduction in digestive acids and enzymes as we age, can lead to constipation. More fruits and vegetables and a daily tonic of apple cider vinegar (2 or 3 teaspoons to 8 ounces of water) is a natural healing home remedy to combat constipation.

CORN AND CALLUS TREATMENT
Soak your feet for half an hour in a warm bath containing half a cup of apple cider vinegar. Use a clean pumice stone to rub the affected areas then apply pure apple cider vinegar and cover with a bandage. Reapply vinegar and bandage the following morning.

COUGHS
A home remedy to sooth a nighttime cough is to sprinkle apple cider vinegar on a cloth placed on a pillow.

CRAMPS
Muscle cramps can be caused by a calcium and magnesium imbalance in the body and by a lack of vitamin E. To help prevent the recurrence of cramps, take a regular tonic of apple cider vinegar (2 or 3 teaspoons to 8 ounces of water) along with 1 teaspoon of honey.

DANDRUFF
Apply pure apple cider vinegar to the scalp and work it into the roots of the hair; allow the vinegar to stand for a half hour or a full hour before washing your hair. This will help to destroy the bacteria and fungus that cause dandruff and itchy scalp. Click here for information on how apple cider vinegar can be combined with certain herbs to make an extra strength natural hair care product for combating dandruff and soothing itchy scalp.

DIABETES
A daily tonic of apple cider vinegar (2 or 3 teaspoons to 8 ounces of water) supplies dietary fiber and other ingredients, which are beneficial in controlling blood glucose levels. As well, the acids and enzymes promote better digestion and nutrient absorption, which is impaired in many diabetes sufferers.

This home remedy has been the subject of new research that shows that apple cider vinegar can help lower blood sugar levels.

DIAPER RASH
Use a 50/50 mixture of apple cider vinegar and water to eliminate the bacteria and fungus that cause diaper rash.

DIARRHEA
Pectin, the water soluble fiber in apple cider vinegar, will help to absorb water in the intestines and provide more bulk for the stool. Also, intestinal bacteria transforms pectin into a protective coating which soothes the irritated lining. The well known over the counter diarrhea preparation, Kaopectate contains pectin. So take the natural healing apple cider vinegar tonic (2 or 3 teaspoons to 8 ounces of water) to help eliminate diarrhea.

DIGESTION
As we age, it is common for people to produce less stomach acid (hydrochloric acid) which can lead to digestive problems. Taking the apple cider vinegar tonic home remedy (2 or 3 teaspoons to 8 ounces of water) before a meal will enhance the action of your stomach's acid and digestive enzymes.

EAR INFECTIONS
Use an ear syringe (found at drug stores) to squirt a vinegar solution into the ear and let it sit for a minute or so, then turn your head and let the liquid drain out.

The vinegar solution can be a 50/50 mixture of ACV and pure water, a 50/50 mixture of ACV and rubbing alcohol or a solution consisting of one-third vinegar, one-third pure water, and one-third rubbing alcohol.

If the ear problem persists, see a health professional.

ECZEMA
To help relieve the itching and dryness of eczema, apply a 50/50 mixture of apple cider vinegar and water to the affected areas.

FATIGUE
It is thought that the potassium and enzymes obtained through regular use of a vinegar tonic can help beat fatigue. Some experts believe that the addition of 1 or 2 teaspoons of raw honey to the ACV tonic will also help.

FLATULENCE
Many people avoid eating certain foods such as beans due to the gas they produce in the body. This gas is a result of incomplete digestion and can be minimized by soaking the beans in apple cider vinegar prior to cooking them.

FOOT CARE
Try this home remedy for sore and tired feet which sometimes ache at the end of a long day: Add a cup of apple cider vinegar to a basin of warm water and allow your feet to soak for 15 minutes.

GALLBLADDER FLUSH (GALLSTONES)
Along with the apple cider vinegar tonic (2 or 3 teaspoons to 8 ounces of water) before meals, take 6 ounces of organic , unfiltered apple juice for 1 week. This natural home remedy has been reported to help purge small gallstones that could grow to larger ones that would require conventional medical treatment to remove.

GOUT
Although not yet backed up by scientific testing, many people have found that gout home remedies using apple cider vinegar are very effective.
The procedure involves either ingesting an apple cider vinegar tonic or applying ACV to the affected area.
Click here for detailed information on gout and how to use apple cider vinegar as an alternative home remedy for gout.

HEADACHES
Research has shown that people have slightly more alkaline urine when they have a headache. An apple cider vinegar tonic will help restore your body's acid/alkaline balance.
According to one home remedy, inhaling the vapors from a small bottle of apple cider vinegar can also help or if you have a vaporizer, add about 2 tablespoons cider vinegar to the water and inhale the vapors for five minutes.

HEARTBURN (ACID REFLUX)
Heartburn or acid reflux is a condition in which some of the acid content of the stomach periodically backs up into the esophagus.
Even though testimonials abound throughout the net on the effectiveness of using apple cider vinegar to relieve heartburn, no scientific studies have been done to substantiate this.
A recent survey, however, conducted at the Earth Clinic web site found that vinegar was the best of all the home remedies suggested to relieve heartburn or acid reflux.

So to relieve occasional heartburn, try drinking the general apple cider vinegar tonic (2 or 3 teaspoons to 8 ounces of water) before each meal.

 HEMORRHOIDS
A) For mild cases:
Apply the natural healing abilities of pure apple cider vinegar directly to hemorrhoids to help reduce stinging and promote shrinking. Use a cotton ball to apply the vinegar every few hours until symptoms are relieved.

B) For more advanced cases:
And for more information on chronic hemorrhoids, including an an All-Natural Cure that is fast, safe and effective, check out Holly Hayden's e-book called:
" H Miracle - The #1 Alternative solution for Eliminating Piles".

HICCUPS
To stop hiccups, try sipping a glass of warm water in which one teaspoon of apple cider vinegar has been mixed in. This is a lot simpler than many other home remedies for hiccups.

INSECT BITES AND STINGS
Bee and wasp stings, as well as itchy mosquito bites can be soothed by applying undiluted apple cider vinegar to the affected area.

INSOMNIA
Dr Jarvis in his book "Folk Medicine" recommends the use of honey and apple cider vinegar for those who have a hard time falling asleep at night. Mix one tablespoon of apple cider vinegar in one cup of honey and take two teaspoons of this mixture just before going to bed. Repeat after an hour if required. (You can sleep on that one!)

Some people find that simply taking one tablespoon of apple cider vinegar in 8 ounces of water just before bedtime, helps them to get to sleep quicker and sleep much longer.

JELLYFISH STINGS (Chironex Fleckeri and Chiropsalmus Quadrigatus)
The sting of the large box jellyfish, found along the northern tropical coastline of Australia, can be deadly. The venom injected by these animals is capable of killing humans within minutes.
When a sting occurs, pieces of tentacle may be left in the victims skin which can continue to release venom. However, by dousing the sting area with regular vinegar (5% acetic acid content), the further release of poison will be rapidly and completely stopped.
That's why Australian lifeguards always keep vinegar on hand and it's their initial first aid treatment of choice.

LEG CRAMPS
Take the apple cider vinegar tonic regularly (2 or 3 teaspoons to 8 ounces of water) to help the body's absorption of calcium and magnesium and thus protect against painful leg cramps.

MENSTRUAL PROBLEMS
A glass of apple cider tonic (2 or 3 teaspoons to 8 ounces of water) in the morning has been reported to help reduce the flow of a heavy period.

MORNING SICKNESS
Many women experience nausea and vomiting, often in the morning, during the first three months of pregnancy. A home remedy reported to help keep morning sickness at bay involves simply drinking, as soon as you get up, a glass of water containing a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar.

MUSCLE SORENESS
Apply a cloth dampened with apple cider vinegar and a dash of cayenne pepper directly to the sore muscle for 5 minutes and reapply as needed.
For sore muscles all-over, try soaking in a warm water bath into which you have added 2 to 3 cups of apple cider vinegar.

 NAIL FUNGUS
Nail and toenail fungus infections are very difficult to cure even with modern drugs which many people prefer not to use due to reported side effects and poor effectiveness.
Fortunately there are many vinegar home remedies used to cure this condition some which use only vinegar and others involve combinations of vinegar with hydrogen peroxide, tea tree oil, olive oil, etc.
In all cases the treatment lasts for months and is usually applied to the effected area twice a day.
Click here for more information on nail fungus and a description of one of the simpler vinegar nail fungus home remedies involving just plain white distilled vinegar.

 NIGHT SWEATS & HOT FLASHES
Apple cider vinegar has helped reduce, even eliminate, hot flashes and night sweats for many menopausal women. The home remedy recommends taking a vinegar tonic daily, morning & night: 1 – 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar in 8 ounces of vinegar (or other beverage).

POISON IVY & POISON OAK
The health and fitness expert Patricia Bragg recommends spraying a solution of equal parts apple cider vinegar and distilled water on to the affected areas to stop the pain, itching and ease the swelling. Cooling the spray in the refrigerator will provide even more relief.

SHINGLES
Taking a bath of warm water mixed with with 1 cup of apple cider vinegar will help relieve the itching of shingles rashes.
Also, drinking the ACV tonic and applying undiluted ACV directly to the rash is a home remedy for shingles that is outlined on this web page.
It has been reported to lessen shingles pain and limit the rash from spreading.

SINUSITIS
To help relieve the pain of sinusitis, both Patrick Quillin PhD, in his book Amazing Honey Garlic and Vinegar, and Cynthia Holzapfel, in her book Apple Cider Vinegar for Weight Loss and Good Health, suggest drinking a glass of water with 1 or 2 teaspoons of ACV added, every hour for 6 to 8 hours.

For sinus headache, Marie Nadine Antol, in her book The Incredible Secrets of Vinegar, recommends adding an eight of a cup of ACV to a cool-air vaporizer and inhaling the infused-air directly for 5 minutes.
After that lie down for 20 minutes and wait for your respiratory passages to clear.

For excess mucus in the nose, throat, or sinus cavities (post nasal drip), try a solution of warm water and 1 to 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar. Place a small amount in the palm of your hand, block one nostril, then place the other nostril into the vinegar solution and sniff hard. You'll experience the disinfecting and mucus-cutting benefits of apple cider vinegar deep into your sinus cavities. Let the solution run down the back of your throat then spit it out. After that, repeat with the other nostril.

continued from above post:

SORE THROAT
One of many natural healing home remedies for a sore throat involves gargling with a mixture of 1 teaspoon of apple cider vinegar to half a cup of water, using 3 mouthfuls of mixture each hour.
As P. Bragg warns in her book "Apple Cider Vinegar-Miracle Health System", don't swallow the gargled mixture, because ACV acts like a sponge drawing out throat and mouth germs and toxins.

SUN BURNS
If the sunburn is localized, apply full strength apple cider vinegar on the affected skin to obtain relief. Do this by soaking a thin towel in apple cider vinegar and placing it over the burn. Leave it on to help prevent peeling and itching.
If the sunburn covers a large part of the body then try this home remedy recommended by Patricia Bragg in her book called Apple Cider Vinegar-Miracle Health System:
Take a cool bath in which one cup of ACV has been added. After soaking in the bath, gently dry the body and pat ACV directly onto the needed areas. Wait 5 minutes, then pat on aloe vera gel.

ULCERS
A preliminary study in Japan showed that taking a weak vinegar solution can give over 95% protection from alcohol-induced ulcers.

URINARY TRACT INFECTIONS
Drink a daily tonic of apple cider vinegar to help you keep the right pH balance in the urinary tract since the proper acidity creates an inhospitable environment for bacteria and yeasts that cause these infections.
Cranberry juice is also a well known home remedy for urinary tract infections. It prevents bacteria from attaching to the walls of the urinary tract.
For a tasty drink, try adding 2 teaspoons of apple cider vinegar to an eight ounce glass of cranberry juice and benefit from both home remedies at the same time.

VARICOSE VEINS
Dr Jarvis notes that the following folk remedy is used not only in Vermont but also in Scotland, England and Germany.
Apply undiluted apple cider vinegar to the varicose veins at night and in the morning, and take two teaspoons of ACV in a glass of water twice a day. Shrinking of the veins will be noticed after one month.

WARTS
Patricia Bragg cautions: do not rub warts since this could spread them. Apply an ACV soaked gauze bandage to the wart overnight and in the morning replace it with a castor oil soaked gauze bandage. At night alternate the ACV with crushed fresh garlic and vitamin E (prick open capsule).

Click here for details on warts and another effective (and simpler) home remedy for the removal of warts using apple cider vinegar.

 WEIGHT LOSS
The use of apple cider vinegar as a home remedy for weight loss is centuries old. Dr Jarvis maintained that an overweight person could lose weight gradually by taking 2 teaspoons of ACV in a glass of water at each meal. No change in the daily food intake is required except to avoid high fat containing foods.

Click here for more information on apple cider vinegar and weight loss.

YEAST INFECTION
According to one home remedy, relief can be obtained by the use of a vinegar douche, consisting of 2 tablespoons of ACV mixed in one quart of warm water, applied twice a day until the burning and itching symptoms of the infection have stopped.

Frequent douching however is no longer recommended, since recent studies have shown that this can cause more harm than good.
A vinegar bath, prepared by adding one cup of ACV to the bath water, can help provide external relief.

If you tend to get frequent yeast infections, try to find the cause (such as antibiotic use or a diet too high in refined sugars) and reduce or eliminate it.
Many have found that a daily intake of yogurt helps to get rid of this problem.

My grandma used to swear by apple-cider vinegar, probably a similar effect.

Enlightenme, that's interesting I didn't think of the comparison...

Mary that is really inspirational that your Mom (or was it your  Grandmother who lived to be 97?
That is a good age! It's good to know that the apple cider vinegar and honey is used for different conditions... :)

Let Food Be Thy Medicine: Top 10 Healing Foods Of The Decade
Posted: 12/30/09 09:01 AM ET

"Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food." -- Hippocrates, father of medicine, 431 B.C.

"Eat Food. Not Too much. Mostly Plants." -- Michael Pollan, renowned food expert and journalist, 2007 A.D.

The healing properties of food have been reported by cultures worldwide throughout history. However, the past decade has presented an explosion of clinical research to show specifically what health benefits individual foods can offer, identifying the various nutrients and phytochemicals associated with these benefits.

Many fruits, vegetables, and unprocessed whole foods have properties that can benefit our health. Studies in the past decade have taken nutritional research beyond protein, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins and minerals. Chemicals in the plants called phytochemicals have been a specific focus in the past decade, offering benefits such as cancer prevention, cholesterol reduction, and hormone regulation, to name a few.

There is truly a cornucopia of nutritional benefits that have been discovered. Here are a few "superfoods" that have received a lot of press in the past decade for their research-supported health benefits:

1 Honey
Honey has been revered throughout the ages for its healing properties. Some outstanding research has shown anti-bacterial and anti-viral effects. Honey is being explored further for its role in digestive health as well as wound healing. The research on honey at the University of Waikatob is particularly impressive.

2 Blueberries
Among the fruits with the highest level of antioxidants, blueberries have been linked to lowering cholesterol, reducing diabetes risk, slowing the aging process, improving motor skills and supporting urinary and vision health. The compound, anthocynanin, gives blueberries their color and may be the main component of its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

3 Salmon
Low in calories and saturated fat, and rich in protein and omega-3 fatty acids, salmon has certainly received a lot of press this past decade. Research showing anti-inflammatory and cancer prevention properties are impressive. Its role in diabetes and Alzheimer’s prevention as well as its overwhelming cardiovascular benefits makes this fish a winner in every category. Look for wild salmon vs. farmed to avoid contaminants such as PCBs.

4 Green Tea
Study after study seems to support the benefits of including green tea in your daily life. Studies are pointing towards its cancer risk reducing properties, its potential in decreasing incidence of stroke and heart disease, and its role in reducing inflammation associated with several types of IBD (inflammatory bowel disease). More recent research is indicating that green tea may help prevent type two diabetes and osteoporosis.

5 Broccoli
Loaded with vitamins such as A, B-6, folic acid, and K and minerals such as calcium and potassium, broccoli is continuing to earn top honors as a nutritional superstar. Its unique claim to fame comes from its cancer-fighting properties, activated by phytochemicals indole-3-carbinol and sulforaphane.

6 Walnuts
Exceptionally rich in heart-healthy omega-3, walnuts made history in 2004 when they became the first food that the FDA allowed to make a qualified health claim: “Supportive but not conclusive research shows that eating 1.5 oz of walnuts per day, as part of a low saturated fat and low cholesterol diet, and not resulting in increased caloric intake may reduce the risk of coronary heart disease."

7 Spices
Turmeric, (anti-inflammatory and may reduce cancer risk and slow the progression of Alzheimer’s), cinnamon (studies show it can help lower cholesterol and stabilize blood sugar), and ginger (supports digestive health, is anti-inflammatory, and looks promising for cancer prevention) were stars of the decade, reminding us that flavoring our foods beyond salt and pepper can add great taste as well as outstanding health benefits.

8 Pomegranate
The pomegranate has been long revered as a symbol of fertility and abundance. In modern times, the focus has shifted to its remarkable health benefits. Rich in antioxidants, the pomegranate research has shown its promise in reducing heart disease risk, lowering cholesterol and blood pressure, and reducing the risk of certain types of cancer.

9 Dark Chocolate
This decade brought us the guilt-reducing research showing us how chocolate, yes, chocolate, could actually be considered a health food. Benefits to our cardiovascular system and our moods have been researched, as well as cancer-protective properties and mood-enhancing effects. I dedicated a whole blog to chocolate’s delicious health benefits.
[ Yowbarb Note: Less is more. 1-2 small pieces of chocolate have a medicinal effect. This effect is lost if more is eaten. Source Dr. Weil of AZ ]

10 Yogurt
In addition to protein, vitamins such as B-2 and B-12, minerals such as calcium and magnesium, yogurt consumers also enjoy the benefits of probiotics. Probiotics are known as the “good bacteria” that can reside in the intestines, offering immune and digestive support. Research has shown improved vaginal health among women consuming yogurt, and the cholesterol-lowering properties of yogurt look promising. Plain yogurt with active cultures is recommended.

Honey for Skin Care

Sep 29, 2010 | By Sarah Terry

Aside from being a natural sweetener and a coveted food substance since the beginning of time, honey also has medicinal uses and benefits for skin care. One of the most common medicinal uses for honey is treating wounds and burns. Before you apply honey to a wound or your skin, talk with your doctor about the potential health dangers and correct application.

History

Since before 700 B.C., people have kept bees to produce honey for both food and medicinal remedies, according to WHFoods. Honey has been used since ancient times in embalming, religious ceremonies, folk remedies and cooking. Honey's medicinal uses date back to ancient Greece and Rome, when the physician Hippocrates used honey as a topical treatment for lip ulcers and wound infections, and other ancient physicians used honey to treat diarrhea, constipation and coughs, notes the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.

Function

Honey contains large quantities of the sugars glucose and fructose, which have antimicrobial actions in high concentrations, explains the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.

When you apply honey to wounds or burns, these concentrated sugars could help prevent or treat infections, specifically from Staphylococcus bacteria strains, as well as E. coli and Candida albicans, WHFoods says.

Honey may also have the potential to lower cholesterol levels, improve your blood-sugar control, act as a laxative to treat constipation, ease allergy symptoms and reduce alcohol intoxication.

Honey appears to have cancer-preventive and anti-tumor actions, as well as

antiseptic properties that can help treat or prevent gingivitis and dental cavities, notes the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.

Uses

Honey is sometimes recommended for skin-care purposes like promoting wound healing and preventing bacterial or fungal skin infections, says the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. Honey has potential benefits for treating wounds, burns and abrasions, notes the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. Manuka honey made from the pollen of the shrub appears to have anti-inflammatory and microorganism-fighting effects that can produce these types of benefits for wounds in your skin. If you undergo surgery, honey used topically in wound dressings may promote healing and prevent infections, points out the University of Maryland Medical Center. Don't apply honey to any wound or broken skin without first consulting your doctor, however.

Application

You might apply honey to the wound or burn by spreading a thin layer directly on the skin area or by applying a dressing soaked in honey to the area, says the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. These are simplest ways to use honey on minor wounds, scrapes, cuts and burns. But you shouldn't apply honey or a honey-soaked dressing to large, open wounds that are deep or severe, warns the University of Maryland Medical Center.
Warning

Honey is very safe, especially when you apply it topically for skin-care purposes. But if you have a pollen or honey allergy, you could have side effects or an allergic reaction, cautions the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. For skin care, use honey topically and don't ingest it. Keep in mind that honey consumption can cause infant botulism in babies younger than 1 year of age, cause elevated blood-sugar levels in people with diabetes and cause chemotherapy drugs to be less effective.

Abstract

As a major component of the Mediterranean diet, olive and olive products have protective effects against several human diseases, such as cardiovascular diseases, neurodegenerative diseases and cancer, via their antioxidant activity. Olive’s beneficial effect is attributed to its phenolic content and fatty acid profile. In this study, effects of different types of olive extracts on cancer cell lines were evaluated. Proliferative, cytotoxic and apoptotic effects of olive extracts were investigated and gene expression profiles of cancer cells treated with olive extracts were analysed in AGS, Caco-2 cell lines and bone marrow human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs). Since topo IIα is essential for chromosome segregation in mitotic cells, the expression level of topo IIα can be used as a marker of cell proliferation. Expression level of topo IIα was checked by using RT-PCR. In vitro results revealed that AGS cell lines were more sensitive to treatment of olive extracts than were colon carcinoma models, Caco-2, and healthy human cells.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Highlights

► Different types of phenolic olive extracts show very similar in vitro effects on different cell lines. ► While phenolic olive extracts induce proliferation at low concentrations, they induce apoptosis at effective doses. ► Stomach cell lines are more sensitive to olive extracts in apoptosis than colon cancer cell lines and healthy human cells.

Yowbarb Note: Caution grapefruit can interfere with some medicines. Check with your pharmacist.

Allrighty then: I got this "meals that heal" instruction from Dr. Joseph Leininger, an old German - born naturopath. He had come to America before WWII. The Doc was eighty years old when I went to his little clinic in Hollywood. 1968.  He surely did not look eighty, more like 69-70. A very strong, alert person even though he liked his pizza and was slightly pudgy. Dr. Joseph Leininger. Excuse it, I am not sure about his name spelling. He wrote a book but I couldn't find it online.
I will be posting a few of his ideas...as I remember them.

Here is one for today.
•   Endive is a very rich source of MANGANESE.
•   You take the endive and wash it well (sea salt and cold water as you wash all greens)
•   Put it in a bowl
•   Wash off and cut a fresh grapefruit
•   Put the juice all over it
•   Toss well
•   After a half hour the manganese will be in a much more absorbable state –
•   so you can get all the nutrition.

Not sure if I already posted this:
Aloe vera draws pain right out of the jawbone when there is a badly impacted wisdom tooth. I had to wait a few days - maybe it was 2 weeks, waiting to get three wisdom teeth out.
After the fact, the dentist told me the three wisdom teeth were grown way down into my jaws. He said I should have had my wisdom teeth out when i was about 17 years old. That was astounding to me. I had regular dental care through high school then had a couple appts while in college and no dentist mentioned about my wisdom teeth, The pain was like someone breaking the bone from the inside..Obviously there was no room for the wisdom teeth and the pain was excruciating.
A neighbor had just given me a piece of Aloe Vera a few weeks earlier to help me heal my lip. I had never heard of Aloe Vera (1978) I had a lip that just would not heal, and beginning to think I would need a stitch. I applied the Aloe Vera (cut off spines and cut a thin slice) and put the side with the green gel right onto my split lip.  After a few applications over a three day time period the lip had healed. She gave me a pamphlet on Aloe Vera. It said, it would not only heal wounds, it would draw extreme pain out of bones, such as a broken bone. So I put the Aloe Vera slices on the outside of the jawbones. Although it was only temporary it did draw the pain right out of the bone. I did have to also resort to strong pain med, just temporarily before the surgery but the Aloe Vera was very comforting and it drew the pain out directly. So I used it often before I got the three wisdom teeth out.

Another surprising use of Aloe Vera.
Background to this: Some of my older kids and I were aware of Aloe Vera pretty well by 1983. The oldest daughter had been putting it on her skin at the first sign of a pimple. Her skin stayed really good. The kids knew I used it for my minor cooking burns and cuts. We had plants at home most of the time for years. One day my kids ran in and said a boy had thrown a brick at my daughter Jessica's face. I got a quick look, not broken but it was going to bruise really bad...I had her lie down and had some ice or cold towel on her face, and ran out to see if I could find the boy... Back soon and my oldest daughter had some something I had never heard of before, or thought of, She had quickly cut off thin strips of the Aloe Vera plant and placed them all over Jessica's nose and cheek area. Then she put bandaids to hold the Aloe Vera slices  on. She had Jessica lie quietly on the couch. So I just let her rest and keep that on. A few hours later she had to eat dinner and go to sleep for the night. The next day before school I looked at Jessica's face. There were no bruises on her face!!

To reiterate:
Aloe Vera helps shrink and heal adolescent pimples

Aloe Vera will heal cooking cuts and burns
"       "      will draw the pain out of a jawbone or any injured or broken bone.
will prevent bruising if applied soon after an accident
will heal up a split lip (my lip used to crack in the winter.)

Thanks for the reminder of the power of aloe Barb!  Maybe it would be a good storage item?

Would also suggest black currant seed oil for severe acne, due to the high GLA.

Wow!  Thanks for posting this eye-opener.  I've grown aloe vera for decades and knew only of its healing properties due to burns, etc., but had no idea about pain relief!  This is incredible.    It has been studied by many and the healing properties are well known, but the pain-relieving qualities are a wonderful bonus.

As an aside, while I was sitting in a doctor's waiting room about 10 years ago, I overheard a group of women talking about how much cancer there seems to be "around here" (Potosi, MO), and then one of the women said she was diagnosed with malignant melanoma, which had spread to her eyes.  She then began drinking aloe vera juice and said it took a while but eventually those little tumors that had spread to her eyes just "dried up" and disappeared and her cancer was eventually all gone.  I wanted so badly to interject and start asking questions, but was just far enough away that it would seem too butt-insky, so I didn't.  Wanted to know how much she drank, what brand, or did she make it herself, how often did she drink it, etc., etc.

Anyway, aloe vera is an amazing plant.

Thanks so much for posting this!!
I am only guessing, but the straight plant gel mixed with a small amt of water and equal parts honey, that might be the way to use it as a med of that type, for cancer.
I also read that the purified type of gel is the kind to use for internal uses. Problem with that is, how many people will end up with little expensive bottles of purified gel, after a cataclysmic event.
ilinda you are knowledgeable about distilling medicinal tinctures - maybe you would know how to "purify" the plant gel.

Last example for now: back about 1986 I knew someone who worked with me, he mentioned, "I take the Aloe Vera to heal problems from one end of my intestinal track to the other."  Without taking it by mouth as a med, he got "really bad hemorrhoids." Pretty sure he used the straight gel from the plant, ate it. Many years ago I did see a recipe, the straight gel with honey...... (??)

I will add Aloe Vera plants to the alphabetical Barter List...
1-2 two starter plants, grow instructions, and a list of its uses - that would be an excellent barter list item - and one to distribute to healers in surrounding survival communities. also the word on these things could be shared on ham radio, of course.

Thks,
Barb T.

UV Index where I am is really high, much of the time. I have had several squamous skin cancer spots taken off ..., recurrences etc.
In all this time, I had (not) remembered I  could be putting the straight plant gel right onto the spots. Now that they are mostly healed i can use that...
After upcoming re-check at dermatologist, will start using that...

I will also look for an article on uses of the Aloe Vera plant for cancer.

PS Not promoting any particular store! :) I happen to have a Amazon Holiday gift card so am buying plants for myself.
big jugs of purified gel can be bought on amazon... AND plants!

The plants can be bought or ordered at Wal Mart stores. Probably lots of other places...

Speaking of our plant friend, Aloe vera, having grown it off and on for decades, I must say that it was only about two or three years ago that I learned it doesn't need to be pampered as I was taught.  A few years ago I saw a couple of raggedy Aloe vera plants sitting outside in the summer sun, and missing many leaves which appeared to have been ripped off, and the poor plant needed help.  So I bought her.

Well, I learned that instead of having it only indoors, and not being watered much at all, it can be in bright sun for part of the day, and can get lots of water.  I left mine outside in the herb garden that year and it did wonderfully.  Now it was brought indoors as it grew to be so heavy and large that it will be difficult to move again.  But I might try.  It seemed to love morning or mid-day sun, and afternoon shade, plus any rains that happen to fall.  But if you have goats you will have to hide it, once they learn they like it.

OTOH, the plant is so versatile that if you don't have space or inclination to grow them out doors (in the winter in temperate locales), it CAN easily be kept on a windowsill.  That is what makes the plant a keeper for any survival situation.  It can go without water for extended periods of time which makes it a survivor itself.  Years ago when I first grew it, I was told that regarding watering it, "just spit in it once a year" and it will be fine.  Well, that's not exactly true, but she was trying to make the case that it can survive for a while on limited water.  Under droughty conditions, aloe vera's leaves will gradually curl from the sides and become thinner and thinner.  That's when you know it's really needing water.  But even then, if necessary it can still linger for quite some time.  Forcing her to live like that, though, seems more like plant torture than anything else.

ilinda, this is true, I learned from experience also that the Aloe Vera plants are wonderfully versatile, and yes, survivor plants. :) Interesting you mention plant torture...Yes, it's a good idea to not torture the plant...   ;D especially such a treasure as this one.
Tonight I will get some big old fresh leaves from gigantic plants, my daughter's boyfriend will bring them home with them, sold at big international markets in Tampa.
I completely forgot about using Aloe...now I can put it on all the healing  areas of my skin and places where the skin tends to split (enlarged joints) that will be a big help. Tonight we get in the Amazon order for my two plants to keep at home for continual use...

I put bottled aloe drinks in Christmas stockings this year.  They were essentially aloe in water, but did have 6 grams of sugar.  My husband likes anything below 10 grams of sugar.

ALOE VERA (ALOE BARBADENSIS)
Medicinal use and Health Benefits

Man has used aloe for over 5000 years. Egyptians first wrote of the healing powers of the plant on their ancient papyrus texts calling it the plant of immortality. Cleopatra and Nefertiti bathed in aloe juice to retain their youth and beautiful looks. Aloe is mentioned several times in the Bible. It was used in the burial of Jesus. History and legend tells that Aristotle convinced Alexander the Great to conquer the island of Socotra in order to collect aloe plants to use as medicine for his soldiers. Greek writer Dioscorides made detailed accounts of aloe's uses. Aloe's influence spread far and wide. In our century, we have the opportunity to read numerous books, hundreds of scientific papers and search the internet to discover the many benefits of aloe.

Research studies highlight the tremendous healing powers of aloe when used both internally and externally.

Some of the benefits include: as a pain and allergy inhibitor, for inflammation, fluid retention, perspiration odours, itching, hemorrhaging and to close cuts for cell regeneration and healing, to destroy parasites, harmful bacteria and fungi in the intestinal tract, to relieve bowel tension and help produce bowel movements, moisturise skin, increase blood flow, remove toxins and dead tissue, penetrate skin to reach tendons, muscles, joints and the lymph system, and promote the growth of new tissue. It also has a normalising action on fluid levels and the acid/ alkaline balance in the body. Research has shown that aloe vera can increase the proliferation of lymphocytes and stimulate natural immunity through killer cell activity. Aloe has a strong effect on the immune system, by activating and stimulating macrophages, monocytes, antibodies and T-cells, as well as increasing the number of anti-body forming Bcells in the spleen.

One of the most important functions of aloe is to aid the digestive system.
Poor digestion can be responsible for many diseases. Our food comprises proteins, carbohydrates and fats that must undergo a process of digestion, which consists of breaking down complex substances into simpler ones so they can be absorbed and used by the body. Aloe is able to assist the body by providing the active properties of a large range of amino acids, monosaccharides, fatty acids and enzymes that act as catalysts in breaking down complex foods so the body can assimilate the nutrients more efficiently. Considerable in-vitro and in-vivo research has been done with the concentration of mucopolysaccharides (MSPs) found in aloe vera. MSPs are long-chained sugar molecules, which are found naturally in every cell of the body, however, around the time of puberty, the body stops producing them. When taken internally, they have been shown to have immune stimulating effects. The MSPs of aloe vera interact with the body's immune system, enhancing rather than over-riding this system. MSPs interject themselves into the cell membranes of the body resulting in much greater cell fluidity and permeability, allowing toxins to flow out of the cells more freely and nutrients to flow in. These nutrients include electrolytes and water, so the MSPs are able to facilitate absorbtion in the gastro-intestinal tract. The overall effect on the body is a rise in energy and cell metabolism activity which leads to a feeling of wellbeing. MSPs also act to protect cells from invasion by microbes such as viruses by setting up a protective barrier, which forms a lining on the colon and keeps toxic wastes from entering the body. MSPs will also lubricate the joints and relieve pain by dilating capillaries, which increases the supply of oxygen and blood to the area. Aloe vera's properties are extraordinary and have been used to treat man's many ailments from A to Z. Its uses and the conditions it may relieve include: abscesses, abrasions, acne, allergies, AIDS, anemia, arterial insufficiency, arthritis, athlete's foot, asthma, bad breath, baldness, blisters, bed sores, bladder infections, blood pressure, bruises, bronchitis, burns, bursitis, bunions, bed wetting, boils, bone fractures, candida, canker sores, cancer, carbuncles, cataracts, cramps, chilblains, chemotherapy side effects, chapped skin and lips, coughs, colds and cold sores, colic, constipation, cystitis, conjunctivitis, colon cleanser, complexion enhancer, chicken pox sores, lowers serum cholesterol, convulsions, chronic fatigue syndrome, diabetes, dandruff, dysentery, depression, dry skin, dermatitis, denture sores, detoxifier, duodenal ulcers, oedema, Epstein Barr virus, earache, fevers, fungus, frost bite, fluid retention, gastrointestinal problems, genital herpes, gangrene, gingivitis, glaucoma, gynaecological diseases, gall ailments, heat rash, headaches, hemorrhoids, heart burn, high blood pressure, hang-overs, hives, heat exhaustion, insomnia, ingrown toenails, indigestion, insect bites, inflamed joints, jaundice, kidney infections, leprosy, laryngitis, lupus, liver ailments, leukaemia, lacerations, multiple sclerosis, mouth ulcers, moles, migraines, menstrual pain, nausea, nervous stress, nappy rash, obesity, psoriasis, prostatitis, pancreas problems, pimples, problems caused by protozoa (ringworm, fungi, virus), prickly heat, periodontal disease, radiation burns, rashes, scar tissue, skin lesions, stings, styes, sprains, sores, scalds, stretch marks, shingles, staph infections, sunburn, sore throat, stomach ulcers, sports injuries, sinus, sun spots, spurs, tonsillitis, tendonitis, trachoma, tuberculosis, tiredness, tropical ear, ulcers, vaginitis, venereal sores, varicose veins, worms, worts, wounds, X-ray burns, yeast infection and zoster (shingles).

Aloe vera has six antiseptic agents:
Sulphur, lupeol, salicylic acid, cinnamic acid, urea nitrogen and phenol which act as a team to provide antimicrobial activity thus eliminating many internal and external infections. The pain relieving action is due to the effective analgesics in salicylic acid, magnesium and lupeol. Fatty acids also have a pain reducing, allergy and inflammation relieving effect, and work to lower harmful cholesterol levels.
Gels from Aloe vera have been compared to those derived from other aloe species and with other plants belonging to the family Asphodelaceae. Bulbine frutescens, for example, is used widely for burns and a host of skin afflictions. Aloe vera extracts might have antibacterial and antifungal activities, which possibly could help treat minor skin infections, such as boils and benign skin cysts and may inhibit growth of fungi causing tinea. For bacteria, inner-leaf gel from aloe vera was shown in one study to inhibit growth of Streptococcus and Shigella species in vitro. In contrast, aloe vera extracts failed to show antibiotic properties against Xanthomonas species.
