SURVIVALIST HEAL THYSELF
RE NATURAL PRODUCTS - especially for the skin
Hi All
Yowbarb here. I am thinking that skin wounds will be very common in the times to come. Wounds that get out of control
could be very very common for survivors of various disasters in the future. Undoubtedly there will be scrapes, cuts, burns,
gouges and the infections that go with it. Add to that, in the aftertimes, just plain wear and tear from doing necessary but
unfamiliar work - often without the necessary gloves or moisturizers - will really tear people
-
Progressive Doctors site also offers a natural Soothing Salve which is used for everything from diaper rash
to cracks on feet. I am hoping it would help with the wierder skin conditions brought about by chemicals etc such as Morgollons and possible skin parasites. I don't know that, but the ingrediaents look good:
The Ultimate Skin Conditioning & Barrier Ointment for:
Bed and/or Diaper Sore Rash;
Dry Cracked Diabetic Feet;
Moist Skin folds (w/Candida or Infection)
Tape Induced Skin Allergies, Irritations, etc.
http://www.dermawound.com/ointment.html
The herbs in Soothing Salve create a synergistic action that assures
fast and soothing relief for abused skin!
Ingredients: Unique blend of certified Organic: Oak Bark, Lobelia, Comfrey, Marshmallow Root,
Mullein Leaf, Skullcap, Black Walnut, Aloe and Calendula in a base of cold pressed certified Organic
Olive Oil, High Desert Beeswax, and Vegetable stearic acid.
Oak Bark has antiseptic and astringent properties. It has often been used to disinfect wounds and
sores. The astringent or tightening property of oak bark helps reduce the swelling which occurs
whenever there has been trauma to the tissues.
Lobelia has often been used as part of herbal combinations as a catalyst to make the actions of the other herbs
stronger and more effective. It is said "to lead other herbs to where they are needed and help them act together as a group".
Comfrey Root and Leaves contain .8 to 1.0% allantoin, a substance which is known to encourage the proliferation of cells. Allantoin is also a natural part of the fetal development process and is found in breast milk, where it helps the baby to grow. the presence of allantoin along with good quantities of calcium, B-12, and protein building substances gives Comfrey a profound ability to rebuild tissues.
Marshmallow Root is used in many different cultures for its emollient, coating, and soothing qualities. It is one of the best herbs for preventing and healing gangrene. Because of these qualities, it is often called "Mortification Root".
Mullein Leaves are natural pain killers. the contain a glycoside called Verbascose which has strong antiseptic and healing effects when applies externally.
Skullcap Leaves have been used to calm and repair the nervous system. They contains silicon, which is found in connective tissues, including those in the nervous system. Silicon is very important in the healing process, enabling the tissues to throw off accumulated pus.
Black Walnut Leaves are a source of natural iodine. It has antiseptic, anti-fungal and anti- parasitic properties. Black Walnut Leaves help protect damaged tissues from infections while they are vulnerable (such as in the case of bed sore and diaper rash).
Aloe Vera extracts have antibacterial and anti fungal activities. It is naturally soothing, and is used on burns and other traumas to the skin.
Calendula in suspension or in tincture is used topically to treat acne, reducing inflammation, controlling bleeding and soothing irritated tissue.
Organic Cold Pressed Olive Oil contains vitamin F (unsaturated fatty acids) which helps regenerate the skin and also combines with protein and cholesterol to form living membranes which hold the body's cells together. It is important to tissue respiration (breathing of the skin.
High Desert Beeswax is a pure, non-allergenic base which helps protect the skin from moisture and contaminants.
Vegetable Stearic Acid is used as a natural preservative, so the products do
not require refrigeration.
Safe and Natural Barrier from moisture and other contaminants on delicate skin.
Organic salve soothe and heal skin quickly - stops irritation and chafing.

Update the aloe vera plant is helping heal my skin.
I have had some dots up on my face near the hairline - been there too long and I was thinking I would need
a biopsy.
Had been getting worse and worse and not healing.
Last night I put the aloe straight on there and just let it stick there for awhile.
(For those who haven't used the aloe plant it is cool, sticky and immediately soothing to the skin.)
This morning - I swear -those scary looking dots are just about gone!!
I also put the plant on my joints where the skin breaks open... better today.
Used to get them in CA one daughter used them for an occasional dot on her face
(normal teen pimple) the aloe would chase that away.
Kept a plant around for kitchen burns, which I used to get more when I was cooking
for five kids and etc.
For some reason, couldn't find it locally, then put off finding some. Needed it for awhile now...
Daughter ordered me a bunch of plants from Texas on ebay.
I take the piece of aloe from the plant rinse it off,
cut off the spines on the outer edges of the piece of aloe and apply it to my skin.
I definitely recommend adding aloe vera to a survival list. It doesn't need much water. It can look completely
shriveled and dead then come back. It could sit in a neglected corner of your survival shelter and then be available to
use when needed. Just talk to the plant drop a little water on it -it's like it was engineered specifically to help humans...
My theory is there is something in the plant which is like human plasma.

RE Aloe vera for pain and healing:
As I posted elsewhere in the forum it even can reduce pain, sometimes take it completely
away on a temporary basis. A German lady told me this in 1980 - she said some people put a big piece of it on the outside of an
area, for example, a broken leg, on the outside skin. Even though the aloe was not near the actual broken bone it would take that pain away for awhile. I had a bad situation with three impacted wisdom teeth, not long after she told me about aloe vera.
I had to wait for the surgery and the pain was bad. (I had been taking some really super extra strength pain stuff which I rarely do.)
I took pieces of the aloe, got rid of the spines and opened them up so the wet part was next to
my aching jawbones. The pain immediate, I mean immediately went away. The relief didn't last long but when you are in agony it
helps to make it stop once in awhile.
The German gal had brought me a few pieces of aloe vera when she found out my lip would not heal up and had been that way
on/off for weeks. I went and got some at a big healthfood store in CA.

Mjoy that's a smart idea to learn to make it.
I keep it around to soothe mosquito and ant bites. I have found that it actually takes the
pain out of a sunburn and helps it turn to tan
- at least there is more of a chance it will turn to tan instead of just peeling off.
I have read that sprinkiling vinegar around during times of infestation, communicable disease it helps.

COPD Support Forum"MY COPD cure personal experience"
Quote "I will stay brief and to the point.
I started to have a reduced breathing a couple of years ago and assumed it was because of being overweight. My wife gave me info about why I had peviously failed a breathing test years NACago and the fact that it meant I had COPD. No help or suggestions from M.D.s despite X-RAY and my reporting the problem which I had been unable to identify properly.
I started my own research because of little medical help and found repeated references to NAC from forums on the web. I took one capsule inn the evening and woke up the next morning with a GREATLY improved breathing. It was VERY dramatic. Taking one capsule a day over the next few weeks enabled me to start singing again and also reduced the discomfort I felt in my broncial tubes. I take, once a day, NAC and the COPD contines to be held at bay. If I stop for a few days it starts to come back, seriously. I have never experienced side effects from taking NAC other than on the first night only my dreams were intense. I hope that this can help oher people who might have a similar problem. I am willing to testify in court to my experience as being true, dramatic and valid. I will continue to post this message occasionally to help others in the future."

Abstract
Conclusion. L-N-Acetylcysteine (L-NAC) significantly reduced reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation and cochlear cell
apoptosis after irradiation. The safe and effective use of L-NAC in reducing radiation-induced sensorineural hearing loss
(SNHL) should be verified by further in vivo studies. Objectives. Radiation-induced SNHL is a common complication after
radiotherapy of head and neck tumours. There is growing evidence to suggest that ROS play an important role in apoptotic
cochlear cell death from ototoxicity, resulting in SNHL. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of L-NAC,
an antioxidant, on radiation-induced apoptosis in cochlear cells. Materials and methods

I have to say, eggs are one of the best whole foods, you could pretty much live in them if you had to. They would be worth their weight in gold! You would be protecting those chickens like they were worth a million in the after times, probably because they would be that valuable.

Chaunska thanks for this info. I didn't know about this substance to help the skin. With all the weird skin conditions today (some brought on by dental sealants, etc. and often untreated) it is good to learn what could help.
Various chemicals and gm foods and other things like gm materials for clothing may have caused some real catastrophes. A lot of MDs are not on top of the situation, I feel. People are forced to figure out what is going on (morgollons etc.) Things like the Bergamot Oil would likely help with a whole range of conditions. ? :)

BERGAMOT OIL Overview Information
Bergamot is a plant that produces a type of citrus fruit. Oil taken from the peel of the fruit is used to make medicine.
Some people treat a skin condition called psoriasis by applying bergamot oil directly to the skin and then shining long-wave ultraviolet (UV) light on the affected area. Bergamot oil is also applied to the skin (used topically) for a tumor caused by a fungal infection (mycosis fungoides) and for pigment loss (vitiligo). It is also used as an insecticide to protect the body against lice and other parasites.
Bergamot oil is sometimes inhaled (used as aromatherapy) to reduce anxiety during radiation treatment.
In foods, bergamot oil is widely used as a citrus flavoring agent, especially in gelatins and puddings.
In manufacturing, bergamot oil is used in perfumes, creams, lotions, soaps, and suntan oils.
How does it work?
Bergamot oil has several active chemicals. These chemicals can make the skin sensitive to sunlight.

Oil of Oregano
© Copyright Bee Wilder, Extensively Revised December 20, 2011
Cautions:
Unhealthy people cannot handle taking oil of oregano internally (by mouth) since it is very strong and powerful.
If you are taking blood thinning drugs, oil of oregano also helps thin the blood so please work with your doctor on adjusting medications accordingly.
Always dilute oil of oregano with extra virgin olive oil prior to using it; the usual mixture is 50/50 put into a dropper bottle, but when used in the mouth it is diluted even more—see Mouth Sores, Abscesses, and Toothaches below.
True Oil of Oregano
Oil of oregano is a completely natural substance derived from wild oregano species. The plant grows in remote mountainous regions free of pollution. Only the leaves of the flowering plant are used. They are picked precisely when the plant is highest in essential oil.
Being wild, it is grown chemical-free and the oil is extracted via a completely natural process - no chemicals or solvents are used. The oil is the source of virtually all of the plant's active ingredients.
There are a wide variety of plants that are confused with oregano, including marjoram, thyme and sage. True oregano grows wild in Mediterranean regions such as Greece and Turkey. Wild oregano is the source of surprisingly potent oil of oregano.
The key element in oregano is the oil, which Foster points out in his book "In Herbal Renaissance" "contains carvacrol and thymol as the primary components." Foster attributes the "fungicidal and worm-expellant properties" of oil of oregano to carvacrol and thymol.
Cass Ingram, D.O., writes in his book "The Cure is in the Cupboard" "these two phenols [carvacrol and thymol] work "synergistically" and that is the reason "oil of oregano" packs a double punch in antiseptic power and explains why it is so potent when taken internally.
Oil of oregano is a powerful pain killer. An article published in Phytotherapy Research describes how oregano oil superseded (came before) anti-inflammatory drugs in reversing pain and inflammation, and is nearly as powerful as morphine as a pain killer.
In his book "Herbal Renaissance," Steven Foster credits oregano as having "been employed to treat indigestion, diarrhea, nervous tension, insect bites, toothache, earache, rheumatism and coughs due to whooping cough and bronchitis (primarily for it's antispasmodic effects)." The ancient Greeks were among the first to take advantage of oregano's medicinal qualities. The Greeks termed the spice origanos, meaning "delight of the mountains."
Cass Ingram, D.O., has written the book "The Cure is in the Cupboard" that is dedicated to unveiling the health benefits of oregano and oil of oregano. He notes that "wild oregano is a veritable natural mineral treasure-house, containing a density of minerals that would rival virtually any food."
The wild oregano is rich in a long list of minerals that includes calcium, magnesium, zinc, iron, potassium, copper, boron, and manganese and vitamins C, A (beta carotene), and niacin. Judging from its mineral content alone, it isn't hard to figure out why oregano is such a valuable commodity.
Oil of Oregano is a Natural Anti–Inflammatory Medicine
An article published in Phyotherapy Research describes how oregano oil surpassed anti–inflammatory drugs in reversing pain and inflammation and that it is nearly as powerful as morphine as a painkiller.
In fact all Inflammation & Infection are Natural Healing Processes created by the body in order to maintain its health as best it can in spite of poor nutrition, an overload of toxins, damaging foods, etc.
Helps Arthritis, Fibromyalgia, Bursitis, Carpel Tunnel, Sore Muscles, Sports Injuries, Backaches, etc.
Oil of Oregano is helpful because it penetrates the skin and reaches as far as the synovial fluid in joints, which helps alleviate arthritis, bursitis, carpal tunnel syndrome, sore muscles, sports injuries, and backaches because it helps pull toxins out. All forms of arthritis, including fibromyalgia, are caused by toxins—see Arthritis, Fibromyalgia, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Tendonitis & Related Diseases.
Rub a few drops of the mixture (50/50 mixture of oil of oregano and extra virgin olive oil) into the skin covering the affected areas.
Helps Alleviate Migraine & Sinus Headaches
Since oil of oregano is a pain killer it can also help alleviate migraine and sinus headaches. Rub the 50/50 mixture into the area between the eyebrows, on either side of the nose (be careful not to get it into the eyes), and into the forehead and temples. It can also be sniffed to get the fumes up into the sinuses and head; sniff it from a full strength bottle of oil of oregano.
Helps Alleviate Congestion
Sniffing a full strength bottle of oil of oregano can also help you breath better and alleviate congestion.
Insect Bites and Stings
Oil of oregano helps neutralize and extract venom (toxins) from insect, spider, and snake bites. If you are planning to enjoy the great outdoors take a bottle of the 50/50 mixture with you.
If you have an allergic reaction to wasp or bee stings oil of oregano oil can help you. Apply it to red swollen bites to help pull out the toxins and help them heal.
Burns
For typical burns that are painful and blistered, oregano oil provides almost instant pain relief – often no blister will develop if it is applied immediately. Mix 1 to 2 drops into 1 teaspoon of extra virgin olive oil and gently apply it to the burn.
Ear Infections
Ear infections are best treated by rubbing oil of oregano around the outside of the ear. It may need to be diluted more with extra virgin olive oil when treating children. Do not put oil of oregano directly in the ear canal.
Mouth Sores, Abscesses, and Toothaches
When you have a toothache or have any kinds of sores or abscesses in your mouth use oil of oregano. Rub an oil of oregano mixture around the infected tooth, but use the diluted mixture since it is very strong. Test it first, and if it is too strong dilute it with more extra virgin olive oil. It helps pull out toxins and reduces pain. For diseased gums rub it into and around the gums.
For sores in the mouth, mix one drop of oregano oil with about 1 teaspoon of extra virgin olive oil and hold it under your tongue until the saliva gathers. You can also take a sip of water. Then swish it around in your mouth for up to 2 minutes and spit it out. Do this 3 or more times a day.

Could Eating This Simple Black Seed Prevent Alzheimer's Disease?
www.greenmedinfo.com
A new study in the elderly finds that black seed safely improves memory, cognition and attention.
A new study published in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology reveals that the seeds of Nigella sativa, commonly known as "black seed," may provide an ideal nutritional supplement for preventing or slowing the progression of Alzheimer disease.[1]
Researchers divided forty elderly volunteers into a treatment group receiving 500 mg capsules of Nigella Sativia twice daily for nine weeks and a placebo group. Subjects were assessed for neuropsychological state and safety profile twice before treatment and after nine weeks. The trial resulted in significant improvements in memory, attention and cognition without any measurable changes in any biochemical markers of cardiac, liver, or kidney function during the nine-week study period.
The researchers also noted that beyond its neuroprotective properties Nigella Sativa also has kidney protective, lung protective, cardioprotective and liver protective properties.
It is remarkable that a thousand years ago the Persian scholar Ibn Sīnā described Nigella sativia in his Canon of Medicine for their enlivening and tonifying effects as follows: 'it stimulates the body's energy and helps recovery from fatigue and dispiritedness. It appears that science is only now catching up to the wisdom of the ancients, which in the case of Black Seed, was known as 'The Remedy for Everything But Death.'
Our own review of the scientific literature on the US National Library of Medicine reveals this remarkable seed's experimentally confirmed benefits articulated through 20 distinct physiological actions:
Analgesic (Pain-Killing)
Anti-Bacterial
Anti-Inflammatory
Anti-Ulcer
Anti-Cholinergic
Anti-Fungal
Ant-Hypertensive
Antioxidant
Antispasmodic
Antiviral
Bronchodilator
Gluconeogenesis Inhibitor (Anti-Diabetic)
Hepatoprotective (Liver Protecting)
Hypotensive
Insulin Sensitizing
Interferon Inducer
Leukotriene Antagonist
Renoprotective (Kidney Protecting)
Tumor Necrosis Factor Alpha Inhibitor
Black seed, like turmeric, ginger, pepper, oregano, and cinnamon, is commonly used as both a food and medicine in traditional cultures. As research continues to accumulate confirming ancient dietary compounds in preventing and treating disease, a genuine paradigm shift within conventional medicine is imminent. When safe, affordable and easily accessible spices, herbs and food concentrates produce therapeutic effects often superior to the drugs, we are increasingly encouraged to look to the farm before the pharmacy.

Why Turmeric May Be the Diseased Liver's Best Friend
Written by Sayer Ji, Founder
New research reveals that as little as 3 grams of fermented turmeric powder daily can significantly reduce elevated liver enzymes within 12 weeks. And this is far from the first study revealing this amazing spice's ability to protect and repair the damaged and diseased liver.
You know turmeric has health benefits, most notably reducing inflammation, but did you know it may also protect and heal the damaged and diseased liver?
A new clinical trial published in the journal BMC Complementary and Alternative Medicine is shedding light on turmeric's remarkable liver protective and regenerative properties.[1]
South Korean researchers at the Clinical Trial Center for Functional Foods, Chonbuk National University Hospital, tested their hypothesis that turmeric may improve liver function by administering a fermented form to subjects, 20 years old and above, who were diagnosed mild to moderate elevated alanine aminotransferase (ALT) levels, a maker for liver damage and/or dysfunction.
Sixty subjects were randomized to receive 3.0 g per fermented turmeric powder (FTP) or placebo 3.0 g per day for 12 weeks. The treatment group received two capsules of FTP three times a day after meals, for 12 weeks.
What were the results?
Not only did FTP significantly reduce ALT levels in subjects but also reduced serum aspartate transaminase (AST) and gamma-glutamyltransferase (GGT), two additional enzymes which when elevated are commonly associated with liver damage. The effects were maintained as long as the subjects remained on the treatment. Also, FTP was well tolerated and without significant adverse effects.
This study adds additional weight to a rather vast body of preclinical research that has accumulated over the past two decades confirming turmeric and its primary polyphenol curcumin's liver protecting properties. The GreenMedInfo.com database now contains 86 studies demonstrating the ability of turmeric (and curcumin) to protect the liver against a wide range of chemical and drug exposures.[2] We recently featured a study published in the Journal of the Medical Association of Thailand which revealed the potential of turmeric to protect and regenerate the diabetic liver.[3]
Turmeric May Also Kill Liver Cancer
What may be even more remarkable is the accumulating research on the anti-liver cancer properties of turmeric (and curcumin). The GreenMedInfo.com has 26 preclinical studies showing it kills liver cancer cells and tumors, including one case study involving a 6-month old infant with a life-threatening liver vascular tumor (hemangioendothelioma) who was reported treated successfully with a dietary supplement of curcumin, with 6-year follow-up.[4]
One of the most remarkable facts about turmeric as a potential drug and chemotherapy alternative is its exceptionally high margin of safety. A 2001 study in cancer patients reported that quantities of curcumin up to 8 g, administered per day for three months, were not toxic and resulted in significant anti-cancer properties in a number of those treated.[5] Considering that turmeric is only 3-4% curcumin by weight, this implies that a larger quantity of turmeric can be consumed safely, as well.
Of course, while these results are promising, the real solution to elevated liver enzymes is to identify the underlying causes, e.g. infection, NSAID use, chemical exposures, dietary intolerances, etc., and remove them. Failing that, those within the integrative medical field who are looking for evidence-based ways to address the sometimes inevitable hepatotoxicity of standard drug-based treatments may find a role for turmeric (curcumin) in their practices. Other folks, simply looking for ways to improve their health and to prevent liver problems may wish to consume smaller doses through incorporating the spice (which must be organic to avoid the dangers of irradiation) into traditional recipes at culinary doses. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turmeric
Turmeric (Curcuma longa) /ˈtɜrmərɪk/ is a rhizomatous herbaceous perennial plant of the ginger family, Zingiberaceae. It is native to tropical South Asia and needs temperatures between 20°C and 30°C (68°F and 86°F) and a considerable amount of annual rainfall to thrive. Plants are gathered annually for their rhizomes, and propagated from some of those rhizomes in the following season.
When not used fresh, the rhizomes are boiled for several minutes (about 30-45 minutes) and then dried in hot ovens,[4] after which they are ground into a deep orange-yellow powder commonly used as a spice in curries and other South Asian and Middle Eastern cuisine, for dyeing, and to impart color to mustard condiments. Its active ingredient is curcumin and it has a distinctly earthy, slightly bitter, slightly hot peppery flavor and a mustardy smell. Curcumin has been a centre of attraction for potential treatment of an array of diseases, including cancer, Alzheimer's disease, diabetes, allergies, arthritis and other chronic illnesses.

Excerpts: History
Turmeric has been used in India for thousands of years and is a major part of Ayurvedic medicine. It was first used as a dye and then later for its possible medicinal properties
.....
Medicine
In India, turmeric has been used traditionally for thousands of years as a remedy for stomach and liver ailments, as well as topically to heal sores, basically for its antimicrobial property. In the Auyurvedic system (since c. 1900 BCE) turmeric was a medicine for a range of diseases and conditions, including those of the skin, pulmonary, and gastrointestinal systems, aches, pains, wounds, sprains, and liver disorders. A fresh juice is commonly used in many skin conditions, including eczema, chicken pox, shingles, allergy, and scabies. The active compound curcumin is known to have a wide range of biological effects including anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antitumour, antibacterial, and antiviral activities, which indicate huge potential in veterinary and clinical medicine. In Chinese medicine, it is used for treatment of various infections and as an antiseptic.

Turmeric: The Spice That Can Potentially Help Your Health in 150 Different Ways
July 08, 2013 | 294,495 views
By Dr. Mercola
Most spices have powerful medicinal properties, which is precisely why they've been used to promote healing for thousands of years prior to the advent of modern, synthetic drug-based medicine.
One such spice is turmeric, the yellow-pigmented "curry spice" often used in Indian cuisine. Turmeric contains curcumin, the polyphenol identified as its primary active component and which exhibits over 150 potentially therapeutic activities, which include antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer properties.1
Curcumin is capable of crossing the blood-brain barrier, which is one reason why it holds promise as a neuroprotective agent in a wide range of neurological disorders. Researchers have investigated curcumin for its potential role in improving Parkinson's disease.
Preliminary results indicate that it may hold even more promise than the drugs currently used for this disorder, many of which (ironically) have serious neurotoxic side effects, including dyskinesia – a movement disorder identical to the symptoms of Parkinson's disease.
Natural Curcumin Extract Outshines Parkinson's Drugs
Parkinson's is a neurodegenerative disease caused by a steady depletion of dopamine-producing nerve cells, particularly in the area of your brain referred to as the substantia nigra. Most of the current drug treatments for Parkinson's disease, known as dopamine agonists, focus on replenishing dopamine.
Although such treatments provide symptomatic relief during early Parkinson's disease, they are ineffective in the long term where they may actually increase symptoms such as tremor, postural instability and cognitive deficits that are common with this disease. They are also associated with motor complications and a laundry list of other strange and disturbing side effects, including:
Euphoria
Nausea
Hallucinations
Insomnia
Causing or worsening psychosis
Unusual tiredness or weakness
Orthostatic hypotension (a dizzy spell caused by a sudden drop in blood pressure)
Dizziness, drowsiness, lightheadedness, or fainting
Increased orgasmic intensity
Twitching, twisting, or other unusual body movements
Weight loss
Pathological addiction (gambling, shopping, internet pornography, hypersexuality)
As researchers noted in the journal Current Pharmaceutical Design:2
"Most of the current pharmacotherapeutic approaches in PD [Parkinson's disease] are aimed at replenishing the striatal dopamine. Although these drugs provide symptomatic relief during early PD, many patients develop motor complications with long-term treatment. Further, PD medications do not effectively tackle tremor, postural instability and cognitive deficits.
Most importantly, most of these drugs do not exhibit neuroprotective effects in patients. Consequently, novel therapies involving natural antioxidants and plant products/molecules with neuroprotective properties are being exploited for adjunctive therapy."
Unlike Parkinson's drugs, curcumin is neuroprotective and several studies strongly support its use for the treatment of Parkinson's. For example:
• Curcumin showed neuroprotective properties in an animal model of Parkinson's disease; the beneficial effect was thought to be related, in part, to its antioxidant capabilities and its ability to penetrate the brain.3
• Curcumin alleviated the effects of glutathione depletion, which causes oxidative stress, mitochondria dysfunction and cell death – and is a feature of early Parkinson's disease.4
• The c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK) signaling pathway is involved in dopaminergic neuronal degeneration, which is in turn associated with Parkinson's. Curcumin prevents dopaminergic neuronal death through inhibition of the JNK pathway, and thereby offers a neuroprotective effect that may be beneficial for Parkinson's.5
• Slow-wriggling alpha-synuclein proteins can cause clumping, which is the first step for diseases such as Parkinson's. Curcumin helps prevent the proteins from clumping.6
Curcumin Is a Powerful Ally for Your Brain Health
For years now turmeric, and its active ingredient curcumin, have shown powerful benefits to your brain health. One of the ways that it works, similar to vitamin D, is modulating large numbers of your genes; in fact, curcumin has been shown to influence more than 700 genes.
The potential healing power of this spice, which is an important part of Eastern cultural traditions including traditional Chinese medicine and Ayurveda, perhaps first came about when it was noticed that the prevalence of Alzheimer's disease among older adults in India is more than four times lower than the rate in the United States.
Why such a significant difference?
Some researchers believe the answer for this drastic disparity in Alzheimer's disease prevalence is a direct result of curcumin. Research has shown that curcumin may help inhibit the accumulation of destructive beta amyloids in the brain of Alzheimer's patients, as well as break up existing plaques. People with Alzheimer's tend to have higher levels of inflammation in their brains, and curcumin is perhaps most known for its potent anti-inflammatory properties. The compound can inhibit both the activity and the inflammatory metabolic byproducts of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX2) and 5-lipooxygenase (5-LOX) enzymes, as well as other enzymes and hormones that modulate inflammation.
And that's not all. The growing interest in curcumin over the past 50 years is understandable when you consider the many health benefits researchers have found when studying this spice. According to an ever-expanding clinical body of studies, curcumin may help:
(to read remainder of article, click on link at top).
(Editor's Note: I have been using turmeric as a spice for several years now and can attest that I have actually noticed a positive effect on my short-term memory. Hubby and I noticed this phenomenon, independently of each other, about 6 months or so after beginning to cook with turmeric, which I try to use every day.)

This is priceless info., Jim.
A few months ago we had a bleeding emergency here on the farm. A goat whose horn was beginning to poke him in the eye had to have a bit of that horn sawed off. Horns of goats, and probably most animals are very sensitive to pain, etc., as they are directly connected to the brain and full of nerves. But losing an eye is serious.
So hubby sawed and sawed, carefully, but still the bleeding began and continued a while. Finally after many phone calls, scouring the books, we packed it with plain white flour which did the trick. BUT, I prefer the cayenne. Dried, powdered yarrow would work also, but I like the idea of cayenne, as it requires a lesser amount, plus it is more versatile than about any other coagulent.
After reading this, I decided to grow cayenne peppers again.

There is a statement in a recent Mother Earth News article entitled "Grow Thse NUTRITIOUS CROP VARIETIES", by author Jo Robinson, beginning on page 37 of the February/March 2015 issue.
The statement is: "In a 2009 test-tube study published in the European Journal of Pharmaceutical Science, the phytonutrient quercetin, which is present in apples and onions, killed a flu virus more effectively than the prescription drug Tamiflu.
That is certainly food for thought!

The Magical Medicinal Properties Of Cayenne Pepper For Cancer, Digestion, Heart Disease & More
Posted by: Ty Bollinger in Cancer 101, Foods, Herbs, Nutrition, The Basics
What if there was a common household spice that could rebuild the gut wall to improve digestion, destroy cancer cells, stop a heart attack in its tracks and was useful for weight loss? I’m assuming you’d want to know more about it, right?
The hot fruit of the cayenne plant (“capsicum annuum”) has been used as a superb culinary spice for centuries and may be the most valuable medicinal herb in the entire plant kingdom for many of the reasons mentioned above !
High in vitamins A, C, B complex, calcium and potassium, studies have shown that cayenne can rebuild the tissue in the stomach and the peristaltic action in the intestines. Moreover, cayenne acts as a catalyst and increases the effectiveness of other herbs and alternative cancer treatments.
Have you ever gone after the chips and salsa with gusto and then felt flushed while your nose started to run a little bit? Cayenne warms the body and stimulates the release of mucus from the respiratory passages. If you’ve ever eaten a fresh hot pepper, you know it clears the sinuses and causes sweating.
Cayenne peppers raise the body temperature as it stimulates circulation and blood flow to the skin. Herbs that promote fever and sweating are considered to have a diaphoretic (sweat-inducing) action which helps reduce fever and relieves the congestion of colds and sinusitis.
The active ingredient in cayenne is called capsaicin and in 2004, Dr. Sanjay K. Srivastava and colleagues (University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine) treated pancreatic cells with capsaicin. They found that it disrupted mitochondrial function and induced apoptosis (programmed cell death) in cancerous cells without affecting normal pancreatic cells!
The results of the study were published in the April 20, 2005, issue of Innovations Report, in which Dr. Srivastava stated: “Our results demonstrate that capsaicin is a potent anticancer agent, induces apoptosis in cancer cells and produces no significant damage to normal pancreatic cells, indicating its potential use as a novel chemotherapeutic agent for pancreatic cancer”
In an article published in Reuters on March 16, 2006, entitled, “Hot Pepper Kills Prostate Cancer Cells in Study,” Dr. Soren Lehmann of the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and the UCLA School of Medicine asserted: “Capsaicin had a profound anti-proliferative effect on human prostate cancer cells in culture. It caused 80% of the prostate cancer cells growing in mice to commit suicide in a process known as apoptosis.” Researchers in Japan have also shown that cayenne pepper can dramatically slow the development of prostate tumors, and is an excellent addition to alternative cancer treatment for this type of cancer.
And if cayenne’s cancer-fighting capabilities weren’t enough, its effects upon the venous structure and heart are nothing short of miraculous. Cayenne is incredibly nourishing to the heart and has been known to stop heart attacks within 30 seconds. If you want something in your first aid kit for a heart attack, carry cayenne tincture.
According to Dr. John R. Christopher, “In 35 years of practice, and working with the people and teaching, I have never on house calls lost one heart attack patient and the reason is, whenever I go in (if they are still breathing) I pour down them a cup of cayenne tea (a teaspoon of cayenne in a cup of hot water) and within minutes they are up and around.”
In addition to being a welcome addition, there’s also evidence to suggest that cayenne may be useful in the treatment of obesity. Results of one trial showed that consumption of 10 grams of cayenne pepper with meals helped to reduce appetite, while results of another revealed that cayenne increases the metabolism of dietary fats. Lastly, herbalists from centuries past would pour cayenne pepper directly on fresh wounds in order to sterilize and stop bleeding.
Many of us (over 90%) have worms or different parasites in our systems. One simple way to get rid of them is to have a “cayenne drink” daily. Fill up a glass with water or juice and then add 1/4 tsp of cayenne pepper. Stir it up and then “down the hatch.” Yes, it’s a bit spicy, but you’ll get used to it.
As you can see, the amazing curative powers of cayenne are almost mind-boggling. Clearly, it is a “wonder herb” that has scientifically proven its worth! According to Dr. Richard Schulze, “If you master only one herb in your life, master cayenne pepper. It is more powerful than any other.”
On a personal note, I take cayenne pepper every day as part of my nutritional regimen and a “preventative” cancer treatment. I also keep a cayenne tincture in the house and in both cars … just in case!
Hopefully this provides you with a good overview of the many amazing medicinal uses of cayenne and you put this information to good use. Until next time, may God bless you.

How To Make a Natiural Antibacterial Hand Sanitizer
How to Make Rosemary Hand Sanitizer
Put 1/4 cup fresh leaves of rosemary in a glass or stainless steel pan. Pour 2 cups of filtered water over the leaves and bring the heat up until the water is almost boiling. Remove the pan from the heat, cover it, and let the leaves steep for 20 minutes. Next, pour the rosemary-infused water into a spray bottle. I use small reusable spray bottles that fit nicely in my purse, car, lunch containers or wherever else I may need to keep some.

ilinda: Great info you posted, about the cayenne and the rosemary leaves. I hope everyone will take note. This could save lives in emergency situations.

In Reply #48 I posted about black seed, nigella sativa. Huge doses are not recommended. Not studied or recommended for pregnant women. Too much contact with skin can cause soreness. Read the Livestrong article to gain a bit more info. I would like to know more where to draw the line on useage because it is supposed to be a preventative for Alzheimers.

Thanks for posting this, and also for questioning the potential toxicity of concentrated seed oil.
After reading it, the entire phenomenon reminds me of "wormseed", not to be confused with "wormwood", both of which are used for de-worming in some livestock. Wormseed, Chenopodium anthelmenticum, is more powerful, and was at one time commercially grown, and oil extracted from the seeds, and was sold for the veterinary purpose of deworming. But the oil is very potent and can be lethal, so www.botanical.com recommends that the leaves, stems and seeds can be used by the layperson, usually without the toxic effects of concentrated oils.
I do this with wormseed, for deworming the goats. I distilled the oil in a "table-top" distiller, but have been too afraid to use it, and instead gather the leaves, stems, and flowerheads, dry them, then when needed pulverize them for use in the deworming process.
In reading that black seed is used in both food and medicine, maybe the best thing to do is use the seeds, whole or ground, but not to use the extracted oil unless you are certain of all aspects of its use. If a person wanted to make a salve, it could be made of finely ground seed, rather than the extracted oil, until more is learned about it.

black seed, nigella sativa. Huge doses are not recommended.
Mohamed said that black seed is the cure for everything except death. I take half teaspoonful of whole seeds daily Mon~Fri. They come out of the other end still whole. No problem so far.

Jimfarmer - :) it is wonderful to get some feedback on this and an idea how much of the black seed I can take. I do intend to take it.
I like the quote from Mohamed, too!

Just now seeing this, Barb.
I don't know how much to use either, but I keep the pepper shaker in the freezer, full of black seed, or Nigella sativa. When I need black pepper, I often or usually reach for the black seed. One favorite thing is, when I scramble eggs, after placing the olive oil in skillet, before pouring in egg mixture, I shake out turmeric and black seed into the olive oil. Then I add the eggs. I have no idea how much black seed I'm using--possibly 1/2 tsp.

Dates, figs and prunes have several things in common. They are all fruits we often eat dried. They all likely originate in the Middle East or Mediterranean. And they all have surprising secret health benefits
Dates
Dates have been eaten for over 4,000 years. In the Qur’an, Mary is counselled to eat dates to ease the birth of Jesus. Today, science is giving the same advice.
Why? What effect does eating dates have on delivery?
Sixty-nine pregnant women ate six dates a day for four weeks before their estimated delivery date. Another group of 45 women ate none. The women who ate the dates had significantly greater cervical dilation: 3.52 cm versus 2.02 cm. Spontaneous, or natural, labour occurred in 79% of the women who ate no dates but in a full 96% of the women who did. The women who ate the dates also needed significantly less drugs: 47% of women who did not eat dates had to be administered prostin/oxytocin while only 28% of women who ate dates did. The women who ate dates also had shorter labours: latent phase of the first stage of labour was 906 minutes in the no date group but a significantly shorter 510 minutes in the date group.
This study suggests that eating six dates a day during the last four weeks before labour encourages easier, faster deliveries.
And, it’s not the first study to find this benefit for pregnant women. Other studies have also found greater cervical dilation from eating dates. And a new controlled study, while not finding that dates bring about faster labour, did find that eating dates late in a pregnancy “positively affect(s) the outcome of delivery and labour” by significantly reducing the need for labour augmentation with drugs (oxytocin). The study found that dates produced this important benefit without any adverse effect on the mother or the child.
So, eating six dates a day during the final month of pregnancy could safely bring about huge relief for pregnant women.
Figs
Though prunes may be the dried fruit famous for treating constipation, modern research also supports the fig for this too commonly needed relief.
Our diet and lifestyle are so messed up that chronic constipation has become an incredibly common problem. There are a number of effective herbs for constipation, but now science adds an easy, tasty solution.
Forty people suffering from constipation were given figs that had been turned into a paste while another forty were given a placebo paste in a double-blind study. You could just eat figs, but the study used a fig paste because giving you a fig would make using a placebo impossible.
The people in the study were all experiencing reduced stool frequency, hard stools and difficulty passing stools. The paste they were given was equal to eating about 3 figs. They ate the fig paste or the placebo paste every day for eight weeks.
The people who got the fig paste improved significantly more. Their Transit time went down significantly more: it was reduced from 63 hours to 38 hours. Their stools were significantly softer, and they experienced significantly less abdominal discomfort than people in the placebo group.
So, science says that figs are an easy, safe, affordable remedy for the common problem of constipation.
Dried Plums
You know them as prunes, but the official name is now dried plums. Dried plums are best known for relieving constipation, but they have been hiding a secret and surprising benefit. Recent research has discovered that dried plum is the most beneficial fruit for building bone.
The first clue came in 2002 when 58 postmenopausal women ate either 100g or dried prunes or 75g of dried apples each day for 3 months. Only the prune group had significantly increased markers of bone formation (insulin-like growth factor-I and bone-specific alkaline phosphatase activity). This study provided the first suggestion that eating dried plums could be good for bones in postmenopausal women.
Almost a decade would pass before researchers put that suggestion to the test. The new study included 160 postmenopausal women with low bone density (osteopenia). The women were given either 100g of dried plums or a placebo of dried apple. That’s about 10 prunes a day. All of the women also took 500mg of calcium and 400IU of vitamin D. At the end of the one year study, eating prunes had significantly increased bone mineral density compared to apple.
The effect of the prunes may be even greater than the study suggests because it is not totally clear that apple is a true placebo. Apples include nutrients, including boron, that are good for bones.
A more recent study set out to see if a lower dose of plums would work just as well. If 100g of plums was “highly effective,” how would half as much do? 48 postmenopausal women between the ages of 65 and 79 who had osteopenia were given either 50g of dried plums, 100g of dried plums or no dried plums. As in the earlier study, they each also took 500mg of calcium and 400IU of vitamin D.
At the end of the 6 month study, both doses of prunes had significantly increased bone mineral density. The lower dose was as effective as the higher dose, suggesting that 5-6 dried plums a day should be enough to build bone.
So, modern science has revealed secret benefits to these three ancient fruits.

Very important information for women - Thanks Ilinda!
Non-Western women, as your article suggests, have known techniques for easing birth for millennia that we in the Western world are just catching up to, such as the practice of external eversion and not positioning women on their backs.
Good also to know that prunes help with bone density, and that half as many are as good as more. Those watching their sugar can have a few each day and not be left out of the benefits.

Tonight was episode #9 of the series, "Ancient Remedies for Modern Illness, and it was worth the time spent viewing and taking notes. Some real surprises were there.
Most of these health or medical series offered online these days are usually repeated within a few weeks, so this is a heads up that before October or maybe the end of October, it may be available again.

Ilinda's very informative link expires tonight, so am posting a few screenshots summarizing the info, below.
Will add this first:
Most menopausal women probably already know that the natural progesterone in wild yam (dioscorea) is generally regarded as safe to take. They may not know about plant based estrogen though, which is entirely different from other estrogen sources in HRT that are regarded as being unsafe to take.
The three forms of estrogen:
Estriol: plant based, generally regarded as safe, available OTC as lotion or transdermal drops
Estrone: estrogen extracted from the urine of mares
Estradiol: synthetic estrogen analog not regarded as being safe.
And regarding fertility issues, one can also:
1. Get a Catholic book on rhythm, regardless of one's religious orientation, to learn that culture's millennia-old understanding of how the fertility cycle works, and do the opposite of the birth control advice.
2. Stop using lotion, which usually contains alcohol and other chemicals that are detrimental to sperm. Plant-based oils may be fine.
3. Be aware of which direction the uterus tilts, and select a position conducive to allowing sperm to burrow in, even if pillows are needed. It's also helpful to remain lying in place an hour afterward.
4. Learn to feel the ovulation cramp each month for a better understanding of one's exact ovulation timetable, as it differs for each person.
5. Time intercourse for a day or two ahead of the expected ovulation date, rather than too close to time, so sperm can be in place before the egg is shed.

Excellent, RR.

Because so many states in the U.S., and some other countries, are decriminalizing the "Sacred Plant" (Medical Marijuana) now for use in medical issues, it is probably OK to post this.
The following screen shots were taken from one of the episodes on The Sacred Plant. These shots were only on screen for a second or two, so I had to back up several times before pausing it at the right spot. Am posting two shots, as one of them shows the title, whereas the other shows more of what would be seen as one scrolls down. There is much more than is shown, but that's all that was shown to the audience.
It is obvious that there are many aspects to this plant, and many macromolecules contained therein, plus many uses for them. But as one researcher has said, it is still better, where possible, to use the whole plant, as you get the "entourage effect" by using the whole plant.

Here's what the PFAF database has to add:
Edible Uses
Edible Parts: Leaves; Oil; Seed.
Edible Uses: Oil.
Seed - raw or cooked. It can be parched and eaten as a condiment or made into cakes and fried[2, 85, 177, 183]. The seed is quite tasty, but it is very difficult to separate from the husk. We have tried grinding the seed, husk and all, and eating it this way, but it does then have a very gritty texture[K]. The seed contains about 27.1% protein, 25.6% fat, 7.4% carbohydrate, 6.1% ash[179]. A nutritional analysis is available calculated on a zero moisture basis[218]. A highly nutritious edible oil, rich in essential fatty acids, is obtained from the seed[105, 183]. Leaves. Used in soups[269]. The leaves contain 0.215% carotene[179].

natural turpentine oil
Been researching turpentine; many sources point to this interview (https://youtu.be/pCPS6F_47Kk?t=1624) with Dr. Jennifer Daniels at Extreme Health Radio.
What was so important about this interview for me was that i learned that the dose of turpentine i had tried was too low.
I link above to when (in this interview) Dr. Daniels explains that the dose is one whole tea spoon of turpentine dissolved in three sugar cubes [so one ingests 3 cubes full of turpentine]. This was about four whole droppers full for the small bottle i have, whereas i had tried it two or three times before using only one sugar cube full. Apparently that dose is just too low to accomplish anything. [Indeed, the maximum dose would be three whole tea spoons and 6 starts getting really dangerous. But, quite frankly, i doubt many people ever tried so much since the taste is quite strong and quite bad.]
Also in this interview Dr. Daniels explains that turpentine will cure countless ailments and that selling it as a cure for candida was simply a marketing issue.
Anyway, am going to be trying this later today. [Right now i'm getting ready for a mini beet protocol and i'll take the cubes before i go to bed because i'm going to do an enema tomorrow morning since Dr. Daniels warns that parasites will be expelled and one should only do this protocol if one has three bowel movements a day.]

Products which contain plant sterols, stanols help reduce the bad cholesterol and the high triglycerides...
There are several products on the market. Plant sterols, niacin, cayenne. Some contain an ayurvedic ingredient or two, Indian Gooseberry, and Guggul... Care needs to be taken if using Indian Gooseberry.... google it, more on it later.
I am choosing a product which has niacin, garlic, cayenne, 400 mg of a plant sterol complex and that's it. has high user reviews. Nearly 5, out of 1-5 ratings.
The NIH - National Institute of Health has articles about natural ways to reduce cholesterol and high triglycerides without statin drugs. I may start a separate topic on this. - Barb T.

Because vitamin B12 is a natural product, this seems like a good place for the following warning; although it's not the last word on vitamins or supplements in general, it might be wise to first learn your current B12 levels before assuming you need more. (I personally think taking supplements that are manufactured in a lab might be less valuable than getting those vitamins and minerals from their original sources.)
https://www.yahoo.com/news/high-levels-b12-increased-risk-142800868.html
High Levels of B12 Were Associated with an Increased Risk of Early Death in a New Study
-
ilinda, thanks for posting about that.

In my opinion, the correlation is questionable.
Here's the direct link to the Dutch study, with a need to click the .pdf in the lower right-hand corner of this page:
https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamanetworkopen/fullarticle/2758742
I noted that the opening statement said that even after the study was completed, there only appeared to be a possible correlation between excess plasma B-12 and deaths of 3 clinical sub-populations:
1. the elderly
2. those in kidney failure
3. patients hospitalized for another condition serious enough to be admitted into care
So this is not extrapolatable to the general population.
The study also does not establish causality. All three of those sub-populations were arguably already approaching the end of their lifespan, or in an acute or protracted health crisis, so it would be difficult to establish that plasma rich in B-12 was the culprit or exacerbated a medical condition or caused a medical condition in any way.
It simply has established the presence of B12-rich plasma at or near the time of death of these specific sub-populations.
In addition, the authors of the study acknowledge (toward the bottom) financial connections to the pharmaceutical industry, which suggests an ulterior motivation for the study, and further suggests a bias at the outset against supplements and in favor of drugs.
Watch for a well-designed competing clinical trial in the near future to supercede this study by asking some obvious questions:
1. Does the physiology of death and dying in and of itself entail a plasma concentration / lack of renal clearance of B12?
(We already know that advanced kidney failure causes a lack of clearance of numerous substances)
2. How much do we really know about the physiology of death and dying at the microbiological level?
3. Do substances that we depend upon for our health in life play more than one role in the body near the time of death or under acute stress? Does B12 play a special role at the end of life that has yet to be defined?
4. Does being bed-fast cause B12 and other substances to pool in plasma rather than being cleared efficiently? What other substances might also be affected besides B12? Is B12, being water-soluble, not being cleared because urine itself is not being cleared?
Well-designed studies posted by NIH/NCBI have already demonstrated that populations with aging-related disabilities tend to be locked into a vicious cycle due to a sub-clinical malnourishment of micronutrients. It has been demonstrated that meaningful data cannot be extracted from clinical trials using aging populations without first assessing their total nutritional status, with particular attention to each patient's micro-nutrient baseline. Each study would then need to correct any nutritional deficiencies first, before attempting to gather further data, lest confounding variables be introduced.
Sorry to be so negative, but JAMA should be ashamed of publishing this ::)
-
Don't feel you were negative--you're just questioning the brief summarization of a very complex subject. The two most important aspects of this issue (to me) are: 1) were those who died taking supplemental B12, or were those elevated B12 levels a result of their own physiology?; and
2) what were a all of the other "abnormal" aspects or levels of the various vitamins and/or minerals of each of the deceased?
And of course in the abbreviated version I read, there was NO mention of the ties of the authros to BigPharma! That to me is always a ref flag.
