I am very sorry Jim, if I am not supposed to post articles on this page. I however don't know where else to post it, as I found it to be way to interesting to just pass it by. I will however move it to a more suitable location if requested. //Solani
Don't know if this has been posted already but if it hasn't, here it is.

September 20, 2019 “Nature Is Unraveling.” United States and Canada Have Lost 3 Billion Birds Since 1970. ... “Severe declines in common birds, like those shown in this study, tell us something is wrong. Since the 1970’s, we’ve lost three billion of North America’s birds. This is a full-blown crisis that requires political leadership as well as mass individual action.” — Nicole Michel, Ph.D., Sr. Quantitative Ecologist, National Audubon Society
This is deeply concerning, though there could be many possible explanations, with likely not just one answer.
Am thinking there's probably not a lot that we can do as individuals, but maybe we can add an extra bird feeder this winter, as well as a little extra sheltered nesting location such as uncut brambles? Also an unfrozen water source might be helpful. Maybe begin supplemental feeding with the first hard frost of the season, and continuing possibly at least until a month past the Spring Equinox, to give things a chance to green-up?
Our first hard frost is due to come up around the second week of October, but the Farmer's Almanac is calling for us to have an earlier, colder and longer winter this year...

It is complex--the issue of declining species, including birds. One thing I've wondered about for years is that most birdfeed/seed in stores is not organic. So, what kinds of pesticides are used on it? Fungicide? Insecticide? Is it harmful to birds in the long term? Who knows if neonics are now also being used on these crops meant for songbirds. The 'cides often have killing activities and effects on species other than the intended, so if anyone feeds birds from a bag of seed they purchased, it might help to make sure no synthetic chemicals were used, nor is/was the crop GM, and best, to go organic.
That being said, we cannot change the fact of destruction of habitat where migrating birds go--but when they never return, or their numbners continue to dwindle, we can just look at the burning of the Amazon rainforest (going on as I type this) and wish we knew a way to reverse the destruction. So we do what we can, don't we?

Did you see this comment posted at the bottom of the story about the giant hot spot in the ocean near New Zealand? The professor who was quoted in the article blamed too much sunshine for the sudden appearance of the hydrothermal area, when underwater volcanic activity seems equally plausible...

Earlier this month there was a deadly volcanic eruption on New Zealand's White Island. A comparable escalation in activity of their underwater counterparts seems logical. It is estimated there are up to one million underwater or submarine volcanoes on our planet.
