GOES-16 became operationally available to the NWS Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC) in Boulder, CO on December 9, 2019. GOES-16 is the primary satellite for geostationary space weather observations.

On Wednesday, February 5 at 10:00 p.m. Eastern, NASA's Voyager Twitter account gave out the good news: Voyager 2 is not only stable, but is back at its critical science mission.

"My twin is back to taking science data, and the team at @NASAJPL is evaluating the health of the instruments after their brief shutoff," the account tweeted.

Voyager 2 is sister craft to Voyager 1. Both have been traveling through the solar system — and now beyond it — for the last four decades. Together, they have transformed our understanding of our stellar neighborhood and are already revealing unprecedented information about the interstellar space beyond the Sun's sphere of influence.

WHAT IS THE SOLAR ORBITER?

The European Space Agency and NASA are joining forces to send a spacecraft closer to the Sun than ever before — a mere distance of 0.27 AU, or almost three-quarters of the total distance from Earth to the Sun.

"ESA and NASA realized that we had a lot of the same objectives that we want to achieve," Alan Zide, Solar Orbiter Program Executive at NASA, said during a press conference Friday.

"When you do an international collaboration like this you get a much better science return."

The craft clocks in at 1,800 kilograms, has an 18-meter wingspan, and carries ten scientific instruments onboard that will enable scientists to measure the Sun as never before.

Interesting that the "wheel" seems dark or has dark shadows on the right, and appears to be illuminated from the left.  But if it's "above" the sun, how could that be?  What is the light source from the left?    More stuff to ponder.    Funny thing--it could have been drifting a very short distance from the satellite, and thus millions of miles from the sun.
