Volcanic activity along the western edge of the Pacific “Ring of Fire” gave rise to a tiny island in late November 2013. Located in the Ogasawara Islands, part of the Volcano Islands arc, the new islet sits about 1,000 kilometers (600 miles) south of Tokyo in waters considered part of Japanese territory.

The  Advanced Land Imager (ALI) on NASA’s Earth Observing-1 (EO-1) satellite captured this natural-color image on December 8, 2013. The water around the island is discolored by volcanic minerals and gases and by seafloor sediment stirred up by the ongoing volcanic eruption. The faint white puffs above the center and southwest portion of the island are likely steam and other volcanic gases associated with the eruption.

The new island, named Niijima, rose up out of the sea during a volcanic eruption first reported on November 20, 2013. Niijima sits about 500 meters from Nishino-shima, another volcanic island that last erupted and expanded in 1973–74. The two islands are located at approximately 27°14’ North latitude and 140°52’ East longitude, about 130 kilometers (80 miles) from the nearest inhabited island.

In the first few days after the eruption, scientists speculated that Niijima might not last. New islets like those recently formed off of Pakistan and in the Red Sea can naturally sink back below the water line as they are eroded by wave action that carries away loose sediment, mud, and tephra (volcanic rock fragments). Some subsidence can also occur from the simple weight of gravity and the cooling of the hot rock.

But according to news reports, Niijima is still erupting and growing. Scientists from the Japan Meteorological Agency think the island is large enough to survive for at least several years, if not permanently. By early December, Niijima had grown to 56,000 square meters (13.8 acres), about three times its initial size. It stands 20 to 25 meters above the sea level.

Below are two aerial photographs of Nishino-shima and Niijima taken by the Japan Coast Guard (JCG) on December 1 (top) and December 13, 2013. The JCG also shot some video clips that you can see here.

An estimated 20,491 people in Indonesia have had to be evacuated as the region's Mount Sinabung volcano continues to erupt, blanketing the area in hot clouds of ash. The clouds from the 2,460 metre high volcano have travelled near residential areas, which has forced police to evacuate two villages located seven kilometres from the crater as they were in the cloud's path. Local volcanologists have said that the hot clouds are travelling further every day. The Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation has put the alert status to its highest level, and recommended that the public and tourists do not climb the volcano or come within five kilometres of the crater. Indonesia lies on the Pacific Ring of Fire, an area with nearly 130 active volcanoes, and Mount Sinabung recently became active with many violent eruptions after being dormant for more than four centuries. Report by Laurie Blake.

Mt. Sinabung eruptions

Jakarta Post ‎- 9 hours ago
Nurni Sulaiman, The Jakarta Post, Medan | Archipelago | Thu, January 23 2014, 8:25 AM

The Mount Sinabung eruptions in Karo regency have not only had an adverse impact on the local economy, but also on the rare wildlife surviving around the mountain as well as the traditional customs of the surrounding communities.

Among the rare animals that descended from the mountain was a clouded leopard, which was found dead in a chili farm in Kuta Gugung village, a 10-meter long python, which descended on Payung village, located within a 4-kilometer radius of the volcano and a Sumatran serow, which was found in Beras Tepu village in Simpang Empat district, North Sumatra Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA) reported.

Based on the data at the North Sumatra BKSDA in 1990, only 32 Sumatran serow were documented living in the wild both in the Bukit Barisan mountain range region and the Bukit Batabur protected forest in Riau.

According to North Sumatra BKSDA head Istanto, the rare species is believed to have descended from the Mt. Sinabung because of increased volcanic activity or due to a lack of food. Villagers said that the animal was still alive when it was found on Jan. 17, but was in a weakened condition. The villagers found the Sumatran serow sitting feebly behind a house next to a farm.

“We transported the animal to a safer location, but we failed to save it. It died on Friday. After conducting an autopsy, we found that 30 percent of its lungs had turned black. We assume that this was caused by inhaling volcanic ash,” said Istanto.

Meanwhile, the rare clouded leopard was still alive when found by residents, but died soon after. Antara news agency photographer Irsan Mulyadi who took the exclusive photos of the large cat in a chili farm said it was already dead when he photographed it.

“It was dead and covered in volcanic ash and already smelled like it had been dead for some time,” said Irsan.

The leopard has since been buried by the North Sumatra BKSDA.

According to the Karo administration, the increased volcanic activities have raised the number of evacuees to over 9,000 families or 28,000 residents from dozens of villages. The evacuees have so far taken shelter at 42 evacuation points located within a radius of 10 km and 15 km from the foot of the volcano.

The ongoing disaster has already claimed 31 lives and destroyed several hectares of agricultural land in the regency, which is widely known as a vegetable and fruit producer.

The Karo administration previously said that it would relocate residential settlements located in a dangerous zone within a 3-km radius of the volcano.

Karo community elder in Medan Ucok Sitepu expressed his grief after 12 of his relatives died in the disaster.

Due to the volcanic activity surrounding villagers have not been able to carry out local customs as bereaved families were unable to carry out customary funeral procession in the villages.

Generally, a Batak Karo family needs between three to seven days for a traditional funeral procession before burial.

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono is scheduled to visit Mt. Sinabung evacuees on Thursday.

There have been large bursts at Hawaii's Kilauea volcano spattering intensely hot lava into the air. Geologists say the recent activity has been caused by a build-up of gas below the surface and subsequent explosions. The lava lake in the Overlook crater within Halema'uma'u Crater has been spewing this week. Experts say the flow of the lava was going into the ocean but has since switched directions and is heading towards a remote area, making it more difficult for residents to spot. The volcano has been erupting since the 1980s but the activity is said to be currently steady. Report by Ashley Fudge.

Dramatic footage of rare volcanic lightning as Mt Sinabung erupts 2;32    4,125 Views

Dramatic footage captured pyroclastic flow, a fast-moving current of hot gas and rock, glowing red and rare phenomenon like volcanic lighting as Mount Sinabung in Indonesia's North Sumatra province erupted again on Sunday.
The volcano was seen spitting clouds of gas and lava as high as 13,000 feet in several eruptions.
The 8,530-foot Mount Sinabung has sporadically erupted since September. More than 26,000 villagers have been evacuated since authorities raised the alert status for the volcano to the highest level in November 2013.
An eruption in 2010 killed two people and caught scientists off guard because the volcano had been quiet for four centuries.
Mount Sinabung is among about 130 active volcanoes in Indonesia, which is prone to seismic upheaval due to its location on the Pacific Ring of Fire, an arc of volcanoes and fault lines encircling the Pacific Basin
