Typhoon Tembin: Dozens killed

The deaths come as Filipinos, many in the southern island of Mindanao, are still reeling from a weekend of lashing winds and flooding brought about by Typhoon Tembin, known locally as Vinta.
After battering the southern island of Mindanao, Tembin slammed into another set of Philippine islands late Saturday.

The storm has killed at least 164 people in the Southeast Asian country, sweeping away residents and leaving communities buried in mud, authorities said Monday.
An additional 171 people are missing, Philippine National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) spokeswoman Mina Marasigan told a news conference.
Officials have given conflicting death tolls since the storm ravaged towns and displaced thousands. The spokeswoman said there may be higher counts elsewhere but they are still unconfirmed and unverified.

The current storm left the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) Sunday, and has made landfall in southern Vietnam. It is now a weak typhoon, with 120 km/h (75 mph) sustained winds, according to CNN meteorologist Pedram Javaheri. It is expected to continue to weaken rapidly over the region, moving into southern Cambodia and then Thailand over the next 24 hours.

Typhoon Agaton leaves 2 dead in Cebu
By Rene Acosta - January 2, 2018
MORE than 1,000 families were evacuated in Eastern and Western Samar and in the Caraga region, while thousands of passengers were stranded as Tropical Depression Agaton made a landfall over Dinagat and Siargao early Tuesday, bringing in rains.

The storm, the first to hit the country this year, also brought heavy to moderate rains in other provinces, state weather bureau Pagasa said.

Supt. Gilbert Gorero, spokesman for the Western Visayas regional police, said rains brought by Agaton resulted in floodings in at least 86 barangays and rendered several roads impassable to traffic.

At least 25 families, or 74 persons were evacuated.

Meanwhile, two residents of the southern town of Malabuyoc in Cebu province were confirmed dead due to a landslide triggered by Agaton that made landfall in nearby Santander town at about 5 a.m. on Tuesday.

The Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) identified the fatalities as Richie Pimentel, 39, and Flora Basadre Mata, 64.

PDRRMO Spokesman Julius Regner said Mata was inside her house when it was buried in mud from the landslide that hit Barangay Looc in Malabuyoc.

Cebu Cebuano: Lalawigan sa Sugbu; Filipino: Lalawigan ng Cebu) is a province of the Philippines located in the Central Visayas (Region VII) region, and consisting of a main island and 167 surrounding islands and islets. Its capital is Cebu City, the oldest city and first capital of the Philippines, which is politically independent from the provincial government.
